short questions thread

yes yes yes

No hard and fast rules. Think smaller bowl for flakes and twist, bigger bowls for those finer cut mixtures…Whatever you like though. If you filled a large bowl with twist or plug you’d get half an ounce or more in there easy! You’d be smoking it for hours.

Do you think a pipe is a great way to break away from cigarettes as oppose to e-cigs? I believe with Superior snuff coupled with Irish flake, there is no going back

I think pipe and snuff is an ideal way to break a cigarette habit. For one, average (?) consumption is 3 to 5 bowls a day. Figuring 4, over an 16 hour stretch, that’s 1 bowl every 4 hours. Cigarette smokers average (?) 1 cigarette every 45 minutes if permitted to do so. I think the longer stretches between pipe smokes helps reduce the overwhelming addiction withdrawal feelings. I know before I stopped* smoking cigarettes I couldn’t make it through a 90 minute movie without discomfort (enough that I wanted the smoke more than I wanted to see the end of the movie). Smoking a pipe, I can go hours with only moderate discomfort. Adding snuff into the mix would likely drop the number of bowls per day without discomfort, and likely even increase satisfaction. It does without a doubt reduce or eliminate cravings between smokes. One negative I see with e-cigs is that they only address the nicotine part of the equation. From my reading there are several physiological factors involved with a tobacco habit. I also credit this is part of the reason for the failure rate of gum, patches, and other pharmaceutical tobacco cessation aids. They simply do not address symptoms well enough to keep people from going back to smoking. * I stopped 3 1/2 years ago cold-turkey from a 2+ pack a day habit. The experience was brutal. Working on my project has me smoking again (my choice), but only a pipe. I won’t touch paper wrapped tobacco ever again.

@xapken that’s a pretty damn high average for a pipe smoker! maybe a retired one… I smoke 1 to 4 bowls per week and as of right now I haven’t had one in at least 3 weeks.

@pike mopers I wouldn’t say 3-5 bowls a day is high at all. I have known plenty of smokers over the years who smoke much more. I don’t smoke as much as I used to these days, but I used to easily get through 5 or six a day on average. Part of it has to do with whether one consumes tobacco in other forms, and also, increasingly, whether one is able to smoke on the job. In the days when one could smoke in the workplace, it would not be uncommon for someone to smoke 6-10 bowls per day.

These might be retirees or maybe just hardcore pipe smokers. http://www.brothersofbriar.com/t8056-how-many-bowls-pipe-tobacco-do-you-get-to-enjoy-per-week As for me, I work at home so as long as my lady-friend is in a good mood I’m allowed to smoke inside.

I used the pipe to wean myself off of cigs and I would smoke 3-5 bowls a day at least before I started using snuff and snus.

Absolutely. I remember guys at work who never had a pipe out of their mouths; in fact I would go as far as saying the old pipe smokers who started in the 50s and 60ds before any health warnings or lawsuits being much the heaviest smokers. Strangely, they often tended to be not really regarded as smokers at all and the pipe was seen as having no health issues at all. How things have changed…

And of course it depends also on the size of the bowl, and the type of tobacco being smoked in it. Someone smoking a ribbon cut mixture in a small-bowled pipe is naturally going to go through more bowls per day than someone smoking a dense flake tobacco in a large bowled pipe would.

I smoke two bowls a day. I also use snus as my main nicotine delivery and snuff takes up the slack. Snus and snuff got me off cigs. If a pipe was my only nicotine source I could see me smoking 6-8 bowls a day.

Have you thought of switching to full time snuff use Mick? Or are you happy enough on that regime? I use every tobacco form I can, but day to day its full time snuffing.

@bipolarbear I dunno about you, but I quit smoking cigs to QUIT SMOKING. Isn’t a pipe still considered smoking? It depends what you’re after. I smoke a pipe ONCE OR TWICE a week. That’s usually on weekends. I use an ecig to help my cravings. I don’t want to get back into that habit. Smoking’s terrible for my lungs and I want to live. lol snuff’s good enough for me.

Another question. Is there a hint of menthol in Dholakia Chakali (Sparrow). Not the blue one but the regular one. Looking at Suffreviews I see no one mentioning this, but I find this one to be similar to Super Cheetak. Both have a strong cooling effect that dissipates quickly, to leave only the tobacco scent just a few seconds later.

I pick up something minty in Sparrow but without the cooling sensation of menthol. Probably spearmint or something along those lines. EDIT: I am thinking of Sparrow Cool… are Sparrow and Sparrow Cool the same?

I never had Sparrow cool, so I can’t compare this to regular Sparrow. Regular Sparrow has a cooling effect that last some 5 seconds. Just like 6 Photo Super Cheetak but to a lesser degree. I can’t see this coming from the tobacco only. But maybe I’m wrong and that’s why I’m asking.

OK now I get it. I did order from Northerner the regular sparrow in the small 5g, disposable bags. When I got the package I did not pay much attention to what I received and pour it immediately in a small snap box. Well in fact I checked back the label and they sent me Sparrow Cool instead. Oh well, at least my nose was not lying to me. @Pike Mopers. I can’t really tell the difference between menthol and mint. I believe this is probably due to a cultural trait, being francophone that learned English only in adulthood. In french there is only one word for everything along the menthol line (aka ‘menthe’). That probably leaded my nose to disregard the differences between the different type of menthol that you make in english (mint, spearmint, peppermint, menthol, etc). Some ethnolinguistic right there!

KebAmp that actualy makes sense. a big part of the giving wines elaborate discriptions is it’s actualy easier to sense something you have a name for. Sparrow cool is definatly mentholated but very lightly almost like a seasoning more then a flavor.

I’m finding medium nic level snuff not really cutting it any more. Any recommendations for higher nic snuffs. I’m not interested in American style snuffs or anything menthol.

@nightcap White Elephant, 6 Photo Cheeta and Dholakia White in that order are the highest nic snuffs that I have had and none have menthol
