@xapen aromatics tend to create a goop at the bottom of the pipe which is why many pipe smokers have a specific pipe for aromatics. sometimes (and definitely not always) an aromatic will create a ‘ghost’ flavor in the pipe that lingers when smoking other non-aromatic blends (similar to using a snuffbox for one snuff and then another without cleaning). never heard of any caramelization happening!
I recently bought a few grams of Peter Stokkebye 's Natural at my local shop. Do you consider this in the same league as other OTC drug store pipe tobacco? It does kind of remind me of that.
toffee in your pipe doesn’t sound like a good thing
@bipolarbear I wouldn’t put it in the same league with drug store blends. Half my smoking rotation is Peter Stokkebye–never tried Natural though–and they are on par with C&D and SG.
Pike Mopers, good to know!
I smoke Stokkebye blends occasionally, and while I wouldn’t put them in the same league as premium brands like C&D and Sam Gawith, they’re a step above OTC brands. Not that OTC brands are bad – I enjoy a pipe or two of Carter Hall or Prince Albert once in a while. But OTC blends tend to be rather one-dimensional. So, IMHO, I guess I’d have to rate Stokkebye at two dimensions. For the full 3D experience, though, get a premium brand. As for the Captain Black question: the CB that is available around here smells wonderful, but has no flavor. It’s like smoking shredded paper.
The only Captian Black I smoke is Royal, Blue Lable. I only buy the 14 oz tins. edm
The problem with captain black is that it a) doesn’t smoke like it smells, and b) is so loaded down with humectant (propelene glycol) that it tends to smoke wet and steamy. The steam produced by smoking it tends to lead, naturally enough, to tongue bite, which doesn’t tend to endear a tobacco to its smokers.
Pipe Mopers - I’ve detected asofetida in Dholokia White. Not sure if it was stored near it in a factory or if it was actually added to the snuff… It’s a potent spice so the snuff could have picked it up in a warehouse.
Would that account foe the charming aroma of dead fish?
@Pike Mopers I’m guessing part of that goop is half-burnt sugar. From what I’ve read some brands are up to 10% added sugar by weight in the casing. To me that seems like quite a bit and would make a mess in the pipe.
That fishy taste in Dholakia White is just Nicotiana rustica.
There is sugars in tobacco leaves, just like all plants. That is why people say to smoke pipes and cigars slow and cool, so that you get the most out of the flavor of the sugars, instead of burning them up real hot which destroys the flavor. There’s nothing wrong with captain black, if that is what your into. Only snobs look down on it. I tend to smoke VAs and VAPERS nowadays.
Sounds like the equivalent of Clan or something.
captain black is horrible in my opinion. However very very impotant thing to note with pipe tobaccos is that your smoking style and pipe used can completely change the flavor of a smoke. I’ve had a pipe that many tobaccos I normaly hated smoked awesome in it, while the ones I normaly liked not so much. In a round about way I’am saying you never really know what someone is really smoking in their pipe
I love high end pipe tobacco’s but IMO you still can’t beat good old fashioned Condor. Cheap, (for England anyway), and available everywhere. It is definately a love it or hate it baccy, but strong in the nic department. It’s like the NTSU of the pipe world. Stefan
Condor original is great, just chopped up twist I suppose - no pre-cut tobacco like it.
Is it me, or does Toque’s W&H smell a lot like Wilson’s #22?
It does, you’re right. A lot of people smell bacon in 22, never had that thought.
Do different pipe tobaccos work better in bowls of different inside diameter? I’ve seen some with bowls cut wide enough that one could easily shove their thumb into it, while others are so small not even a pinky finger would fit.
