Simple Snuff Questions, Simple Snuff Answers

I have seen threads like this on other forums and I think they are very useful. Rather than create an entire thread for basic questions, new snuffers can simply post their question(s) here or check if their question has already been answered. The idea is fairly simple. If you have a short question that you want to ask about snuff, post it in this thread. If another poster has an answer to your question, they will respond with an “@” reply. It might be useful to label questions with a [Q] or similar to make it clear that your post is a question. I will periodically update this original post with the questions and a selection of answers. Formatting is subject to change and might not be so great at first. I think this could be a valuable tool for members of the site. Of course most answers could be found using Google or the existing search function, but its useful to consolidate everything into a single thread. So I’ll start us off with a question or two myself:

Unanswered

Answered

  • [Q] Is there a reason why British manufacturers are banned from producing oil-based snuff? Is it related to the safety or health of the product in any way? asked by: @Maneikis [A] Yes. In the days before synthetic oils, animal or vegetable oils would go rancid over time causing users to get sick. Germany has a similar law for the same reason, yet allows for mineral oils, and hence most German snuffs are oil based. answered by: @Xander
  • [Q] Am I better off only having a day’s worth of snuff in each box, or fill the box to the top and refill it back to the top each day? asked by: @Bizzle[A] Yes you are better off, depends on how long your snuff stays fresh in the snuff box you carry. I normally only carry enough for 2-3 days then fill them with something different. A full snuff box less air exposure, filling from bulk daily bad. Answered by: @basement_shaman
X

@maneikis I’ve made your Q&A an announcement in this section for now. If you keep it tended it can remain there.

M

@Xander thank you sir, tis an honor. I’ll update it as often as possible. I’m also considering adding a useful links section to top it off

H

@Bizzle It depends on whether you are a rotation type snuffer or you have a few snuffs that you constantly use. Since I don’t rotate, I have no problems with fulling up my snuffboxes. They are empty again within 3 days anyway.

Hello everyone, soon to be new snuff user here. I have a question about storage. What is the best way to store snuff once a tin is opened?

S

@ambridge78 I think most here would agree that the BEST way is to use a glass jar with a good lid. I use a lot of 4 oz. Mason type jars. The main thing is the seal. Good Luck!!

D

@ambridge78 I like to use small Clamp Jars, even for large bulk storage. The smaller jar give you less space for air after you decant some out for use. It’s not as cheap to get multiple smaller jars that equal the storage space of a large one, but it keeps things fresh longer in my opinion. Air is the enemy. Less empty space = less air.

S

Hello everyone, soon to be new snuff user here. I have a question about storage. What is the best way to store snuff once a tin is opened?

I would also advise that once you open a tin, you should seal it with rubber tape. This works well with Wilson’s of Sharrow tins for example. You don’t need to do this with F&T tins. Some say Toque tins are air tight, but I still would seal them with tape (I don’t use their tins anymore as I only buy toque in bulk). I also tape seal vacuum tins once they’ve been opened.

B

@ambridge78 Air tight glass jars for large tins 25 grams and up. Baby food jars work well.Keep out of direct sunlight and in temperature controlled environment. Small tins put the tin in a zip lock baggies for each tin. Dutch snuff and schmalzler keep in refrigerator in air tight containers.

L

baby food jars are perfect. Neither too big nor too small and they are strongly airtight. Sometimes i can’t open these jars without the aid of a dry cloth.

A

Thanks for the advice guys. I will ask my cousin to save some baby food jars for me.

F

is keeping my snuffs together in cleaned+aired out instant coffee jars (in seperate tins) a bad idea? i left out strong ones like menthols and cheese & bacon to avoid crossover, will the ones i have stored be ok? also, would i get away with sticking some cloves in a tin of toque natural to scent it?

B

@Firestarter0 only if you plan on using it up ,in a short time. For life time storage invest in some good glass jars. The smaller jars work best.2 ounce jars work for up to 25+ grams and you can compact to fit more. Suggestion- .http://www.freundcontainer.com/blue-glass-packer-bottles/p/V4235B03BLU/ $ .49 if you can find less expensive let me know. As for scenting any thing you want. careful with essential oils

F

i meant still in original 10g (or so) tins, multiple of them packed into each jar. just to aid against drying out/keeping them together/etc. dont want the flavours to cross over though. cheers for the info.

C

Simple question: Newbie here. I have been snusing for awhile, and recently ordered my first snuff. I have terrible allergies. I use prescription nasal spray for them, and it keeps them under control. When I tried using snuff, my body reacted as it would if I were to put my whole face onto a cat and inhale deeply - I sneezed furiously. I read enough to know that you don’t want to snort snuff, rather, you should only sniff lightly. The Ozona Presidente does have a wonderful metholated effect. However, I’m not really getting nicotine like I do with snus… Any advice would be most appreciated!

N

The nicotine level in Poschl snuffs is practically non-existant, get yourself some real snuff.

X

@CzechCzar The trick is to take a big pinch. This will both (paradoxically) reduce sneezing, and provide more nicotine. It still won’t compare to snus unless you get very heavy hitting snuffs like Viking Dark, Taxi, Ntsu and a few other potent ones, yet there should be enough even in the average snuff to notice it.

C

Many thanks. So a bigger pinch will make me sneeze less - how big should it be?

For me its as much as I can hold between my thumb and forefinger. One per nostril. It all depends on the type of snuff and the way you take it though.

X

Hi everyone, Well i received my 1st order of snuff today via air mail. I put the kids to bed and at 8:30 i tried for the 1st time some snuff. I decided to try the firedance 1st. I noticed that the tins are sealed just like pipe tobacco tins. I had to pry the lid a bit on the side. Once i got the tin opened i was greated by the great firedance aroma. Now its funny i sneezed right before trying this stuff but i did it like a pro i didnt sneeze at all after taking this stuff yayyy. Almost 30 minutes has passed and i can still smell the blackberry and vanilla. Now i took my midle finger and my thumb to pinch a bit. I blocked my other nostril and i then sniffed just a bit. I felt a bit go down my throat so i dont know if it was some snuff or just mucus but i did feel something go down but i guess thats normal ? Also for the tin I should zip lock it or transfer the stuff to a baby food jar ?

B

@Xilbus fill a snuff box with a couple days worth and keep the rest in the jar ,the open tin will let the snuff dry out faster then the jar. You can peel the label by heating the bottom of the lid with a lighter, start at the warning label and after you have it off cut the warning off and stick the name label to the jar, or make a paper label and tape it to the lid.

T

Welcome @xilbus! I must get me some Firedance. I guess i’ll go light a bowl of Firedance flake and dream of it in my nose… Hmmm… Herb grinder…

F

I was wondering… adding snuff to a rolled cigarette? worth it?

C

I was wondering… adding snuff to a rolled cigarette? worth it?

I believe @Roderick has a story about trying to smoke some snuff. It apparently didn’t end up well for him. You may end up with some flaming snuff in your mouth.

F

@crullers im talking sprinkling some in with tobacco, and using a filter to avoid that issue haha. would be interesting to hear how it went though.

C

Filtered should be OK I’d imagine. Also apparently some pipe smokers will sprinkle some on their pipe tobacco. I’d be afraid if it was a rollie I made with no filter lol.

F

just dont want to ruin a cigarette or waste snuff, for an experiment once, i burnt a half-full tub of red crest, it smouldered and spread slowly, kind of like incense, but it reeked, really badly. wondering if it would reek in a cig too.

B

My hands sweat constantly (hyperhidrosis), so taking pinches is inconvenient with my fingers. Are the little spoons worth the investment? Normally, I use the back of my hand or a card to take snuffs. Are there any better methods?

_

@bsssdd Many, including myself, like to do a ‘boxcar’, which is curling your index finger around the thumbtip, which makes a little ‘box’. You can do more this way than a typical pinch. But if too sweaty for that, a spoon or a ‘bullet’ may be in order. Keep reading this forum, my friend-there are tips on EVERYthing snuff here.

Thanks for explaining the method, just about everything else I’ve read here mentions the thumbnail without saying how to keep it there!

Thank you, I just tried this and it is very effective!

B

Sorry to double post - but I will put a bullet in my next order. I still need to use a scooper to get it into the “box” so a bullet would be the best option for me it seems.

B

@bsssdd I use the box car for some snuff,a spoon for others, and some I pinch depending on the snuff. If you don’t have a plastic snuffhouse.org snuff box ,You should get a few. best under $8 dollars snuff gear I purchased.

Storage-long term. These are some containers I use or have used for longer terms: Kraft soft (spreadable) Limburger cheese jar. Similar to baby food jars. Kerr-Qorpak 2-4 oz wide mouth lab sample bottles. Use these for my daily snuffs. Coated fiber seals. http://www.qorpak.com/bottles-jars/clear-glass-bottles-jars/clear-graduated-medium-round-bottles Heinz glass gravy jars. Very good for long term. I have some 7+ yr old snuff in perfect condition. Just make sure you get them sealed correctly and tight. Should be difficult to remove lid. Tall glass olive jars. Similar to baby food jars. Any mason style jar with good condition lid/ seal (which can be bought new) Nalgene wide mouth heavy walled HDPE lab ware. Very nice as seal is integral with lid and cannot tear or get lost. Will not break! http://www.thermoscientific.com/ecomm/servlet/productsdetail\\_11152\\_L10676\\_87430\\_11964160\\_-1 F&T tins. Seal with tape for very long terms. Pottery crocks with Grolsch type wire/ rubber ring closure that cheese is sometimes sold in. Looks very classy and innocuous on shelf or table. The cheese is usually quite tasty also! A good container source I came across… http://www.freundcontainer.com/ Just be sure to clean and de-odorize containers well. (use vinegar, baking soda, ground coffee, etc.) Keep sealing surfaces clean of debris (snuff) Less air space = better. Store in cool area (cellar/frig) away from light and snuff can last for many years. You may even find that some improves with age. (Old Paris for one) JP

[QUESTION] hey, i am new to tobacco. i recently got a tin of fine cut copenhagen snuff. The tin is maroon with a silver lid and cardboard bottom. i started out by dipping it in my lower lip, but i found it tasted nasty, and then my freind told me i was supposed to sniff it. i tried that and was just sneezing and it did not have a significant nicotine buzz. maybe i wasnt using enough. however i think i read online that i wasnt supposed to sniff it. im confused, so i have been mixing it with my wintergreen skoal dip but i still am unsure as to how i should use it. Thank you!

It’s made to be dipped. As for the taste it may not be for you. Or you could come to like it.

E

yeah, i have gotten used to it. why does it say snuff though?

B

@eamsch : people started dipping snuff like WE Garrett with a stick.(fine dry snuff) then someone made the snuff to dip moist. Confusingly, the English word “snuff” is translated to snus in Swedish and the word snuff is, often incorrectly and outside Sweden, used to refer to both the inhaled form and the placed under the lip form of snus/snuff. However, snuff intended to be inhaled through the nose is referred to as torrsnus (dry snus) or more correctly as luktsnus (smelling-snus) in Swedish. The moist form of snuff placed under the upper lip is just called snus in Swedish, and the correct word for referring to this form would be snus in English as well. What may add to the confusion is that the word snuff may also refer to dipping tobacco (also known as moist snuff, which may confuse even more), which is applied to the lower lip and the gums rather than inhaled or placed under the upper lip. Thus all three forms are different products.

J

@basement_shaman Good post. let me say… Never put American style “snuff” i.e. cope, skoal, grizzly in your nose. Well, OK try it at your own risk. In fact, I wouldn’t put the stuff anywhere but the trash. Swedish style Snus is much nicer and actually the more correct and safer for oral use. Having lived in Sweden I can attest to this as they invented snus/chew and it is sold everywhere, like cigs in the states. BTW they put it in the upper lip. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snus nasal snuff is a whole different game. Goes in the nose. http://www.snuffbox.org.uk/ Also: American chew is fermented as opposed to snus which is pasteurized as part of the manufacturing process which results in less of the carcinogenic compounds/ mold/ bacteria and is thus considered a safer product. It is also date stamped and kept refrigerated until time of sale just as any perishable food product. Plus no need to spit. Never found any Swedes that liked American snuff and I in fact switched. Have several cans of General portion in my freezer. JP

F

Which scotch should i try first, garrett sweet, swisher starr, three thistle or superior? big fan of nicotine, or should i just get snafu plain. ill try all eventually, just working out what to order first. unless theres a better scotch for me? not looking forward to an agressive throat drip, but i can deal with it i guess.

J

Check reviews on this site and then Tony’s as he has tried and rated most of these snuffs. A good place to start. http://ermtony.pbworks.com/w/page/14871474/FrontPage

F

would i be able to reduce the fubar bohica to a more acceptable dragun-level strength by mixing it in some percentage with something like snafu? im not after the dragun scent particularly, just strength.

B

@Firestarter0 - You may tame it with 1 part bohica to 100,000 parts plain snuff. That snuff is imported straight from hell. Did you read reviews before you purchased?

F

@basement_shaman i havent purchased yet, but i want to try a hot spiced snuff, just dragun is out of stock. i was thinking add 1 spoonful to about every 10 plain first haha, then adjust to taste. id like to try it full strength too…

F

anyone know a decent priced actually airtight uk source of jars? im looking to hold about 10g and 25/30g as thats what i buy a wide variety of and dont use all the time. would rubber sealed cliptops work?

H

@Firestarter0 - try Amazon.com, just search for small jars or vials. They have bulk packs that are pretty inexpensive. Thats where I get mine!

M

I buy jars here: http://www.specialtybottle.com/glassjars-2.aspx

N

Check your local dollar stores they usually have small glass jars, that’s where I get mine

T

Specialty Bottle company is great. Its right here in Seattle, not far from my studio… I get all my metal tins and blue vials there… But they don’t have a storefront, darn it. Mail order only.

F

thankyou. anyone any idea if this would do for re-moistening snuff/snus? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Halen-Mon-Distilled-Filtered-Water/dp/B006GAD3UC/ref=sr\\_1\\_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1363740252&sr=8-16

F

Two things- i have to try and avoid coconut oil (particularly orally)as i get sore swollen mouth from coconuts, and i had a reaction to some coconut oil in the past. secont thing- i already have some of the water i linked. you think its suitable? also, unrelated, is there a snuff on snuff.me.uk that is the equivalent of molens A/P and in stock?

J

Re-hydrate snuff in a microwave. Place container of H20 in micro. Heat until steam fills machine. Be careful as this can “explode” After micro is filled with steam, place shallow bowl of snuff inside, shut door. DO NOT TURN ON MICRO. Let the steam / moisture work and…done

F

that is a very good idea, providing microwave is clean haha. ill give it a go.

N

Be careful when you microwave water as it can flash boil and “explode” in your face

F

i heard leaving a wooden spoon or something in the water stops it?

N

^ I heard the same thing

J

NTSC Black - forget the bullet and just use a spoon or pinch?

F

NTSU? i think the best ways to do snuff like that is either spoon or physically place it in your nostril. i was never a fan of taxi, too coarse/moist for me, the only snuff ive noticed ‘falling out’. wonder how ntsu is…

Yuppers, iPad autocorrect is learning all kinds of new snuff centric terms. I just couldn’t get any of it to work in the inexpensive bullet I got to have as a daily carry - very course grind. Just want to make sure I am not missing something obvious as a newb.

M

Yes, NTSU is also similarly coarse. With Taxi or NTSU I say “Pinch, hoist, shove, adjust as necessary”, it’s not hard to learn after a few times…

C

Been away for a while busy with life events etc. during my absence I have not seen rooster around for a while has it gone bye bye?

C

Wow nobody want to answer? or I don’t want to know the answer?

F

i dont know first hand as i never used it, but a quick google tells me you might want to pick another snuff…

C

Thanks Fire I googled it quite a bit, but could not find a definitive answer.

S

This is a great column. You’ve answered questions I didn’t even know I had.

F

What do you guys think to scenting with flavoured vodkas, would it work?

M

Idk, you might just have to try it, here one can buy a small (I call them “airplane size” bottles) for a buck a pop. I’m tempted to try some extra-strong Madagascar Vanilla extract…

B

Not sure if I should create a new Thread, but I’ll try here first. What frequency do you usually partake of snuff in a given period of time? If I’m in the mood I’ve been sniffing every 20 min/when I feel like I could use some more. Is there a rule of thumb to follow? Any tips on cleanup? Seems like after a couple goes and my nose stops “salivating” from the aroma, it gets pretty dry and “crusty”.

S

ha @bryanikon! crusty noses comes with the territory … but you will find threads in here regarding cleaning of the nose … some use neti pots, others “gargle” in the nose nightly, while others just clear it all out in the shower. as far as how often … purely personal preference. so if you feel compelled to go after it every 20 minutes or every 10, go for it. it’s not going to hurt you in the slightest. my two cents, ymmv. cheers.

B

@snuffbrant Thanks for the reply. That sounds fair, should you be blowing your nose to clear stuff out between sniffs? Will loading up then prevent you from getting the same affects, nicotine or aroma, after some time?

3

If I’m feeling real strong I can hold off for 20 min but usually not. Just kidding, I do take snuff that often at times and then could go for hours without. For cleanup bottle of nasal Saline solution is helpful, I sometimes use a Q-tip over the sink. I’ll throw some in a drawer at work even. you’ll also find that you can vary the type of snuff your using to help flush things out.

S

i blow my nose between snuffs … and i am guessing that the more buildup you have between the snuff and the nasal membrane, the less the nicotine absorption … from an aroma aspect, you may find it interesting the more snuffs you sniff without blowing … when it comes out it has a scent too.

O

For me it depends on the snuff. When I take very moist and coarse snuff I usually have to clean my nose very soon. With dry and fine like toast hardly at all. Generally speaking, the nose will probably tell you when it wants to be blown.

H

Me and my friend’s big order just arrived (unfortunately to western NY and not where I am but he’s shipping my portion down). We each ordered some Gekachelter Virginie. He was wondering how you keep it fresh after the bag is open. Is it a schmalzer and hence not liable to drying out? Though my Klostermischung in a tapbox got bone-dry after a while so I dunno.

It’s no Schmalzler and if it’s anything like ‘Offenbacher Cardinal’, what I suspect, it will already be quiet dry. To keep it fresh you should put it in a glas with a screw lid or any other airtight container and store it cool. The Cardinal’s bag btw. wasn’t even closed, just folded and stuffed in a cardboard box.

H

Would a mason jar be okay, even if it was big?

O

the less air inside the better, i would think.

3

I like as narrow a jar as possible, to minimize the air to snuff contact area. I also try to fit it to the volume of snuff I’m storing to minimize the air space. take a look in the grocery store and treat yourself to some green olives, or dessert cherries my personal favorite is the Horse radish jar, very narrow with a rubberized metal lid. Some of these products aren’t much more than a specialized storage jar.

@3_D…3_D aka The Snuff Storage Aficionado…3_D knows… He sent me a bunch of these cool little containers ( never seen them b4 ) filled with snuffs, maybe 3/4 of a inch tall by that wide. ( I still don’t know what they are really used for something in specimens I think. ) 2 of em store so well, can’t even open them…those dam tight lids…3_D…lol

3

@AANYCAARDS ya if I could find those containers about 4x that diameter they be good they’re for artist paint storage and man they do snap tight. pretty good for samples

_

@3_D …artist storage is what I’m use overall…i like em small and thin ( not what she said ) glass bottles black cap bought at Michael’s crafts originally suggested here by @Johnny_Dingo at The Cheap B@$+@rd’s Guide to Snuff Containment http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/comment/248353/#Comment\\_248353 http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/comment/248353/#Comment\\_248353

B

@coder- Rooster - check with your local tobacconist to order you some from US Smokeless. You may have to buy 12 cans but you can offer them up for trade here in the market place thread. Or you could contact bakdoor Ask if he will pick you up some; that is if you can contact him thru Personal message, he has not been active since last year Posts: 514 May 2012 Still get plenty of Rooster here in Charleston SC at any Food Lion. - See more at: http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/6092/rooster-no-longer-made-false-alarm#sthash.HdJfwYoD.dpuf

C

@basement_shaman Thanks! i’ll check out Food Lion not that far from Delaware where i’m at… and i know theres one not to far from the border. appreciate the info!

X

I haven’t seen Rooster in Delaware, but plenty of others are here.

F

perhaps this thread should be revived. ill start with- what is the best way to grind down a snuff like ntsu or taxi? too coarse for me.

B

Use a coffee grinder and then send it through a screen to separate the course from fine ,put the course back in the coffee grinder and repeat

X

Or just buy a different snuff.

L

I used the coffee grinder on my last batch of Babaton. It worked but its just not that great in a finer state. I pretty much ruined it. So I agree with Xander just buy a different snuff.

J

Question, how long does it take to regain complete range of smelling after a cold. I got over a cold about a week ago, but I feel like I just don’t smell as much off of my schmalzers as I used to. I seem to get a good depth out of the menthols and toasts and coffees. I don’t know if I am just “thinking” I am remembering that they were stronger before and they weren’t or what. It was a pretty nasty cold that was going around with lots of nasal inflammation and sore throats. Any thoughts?

S

It varies from person to person, @JayDawg. you snuffing while congested with the flu, and if so, how much? I would give my nose a few days off and spend it cleaning house. Think Spring Cleaning, ya? I personally use a mix of White Elephant and Black Motia. 40-60. When I wake up, I fill my nostrils to full capacity while the shower heats then jump in, head near the steam. That will do wonders! A Neti pot works also, or purchase Tiger Balm and smear some under your nose on the upper lip.

M

Oh boy I better update that original post, LOL!!

J

@SnuffH3ead, no I had to stop snuffing for a couple days while I was sick. I am cold symptom free now about 10 days and I think I am getting all subtle scents now. As an aside, I got a 6 photo Motia on my 1st order and I was wondering is it just me or does that snuff smell like ground up Nag Champa inscence? I snuffed it once and immediately netti potted it out. It is not that I don’t like the smell of Nag Champa, but I have such a strong association with burning inscence that it was too strange to keep it in there. I may go back and revisit that Motia.

S

Sounds like your on the road to recovery, mate. This is good! And don’t worry, it took me nearly a week to become comfortable with 6P Motia. I can now use it as a daily snuff and love it! I would use small amounts, gentle sniffs, or mix it with another snuff to mild it out in a snuff box. 30-70 ratio should work. @JayDawg

N

Q: When I cut off your head what will you call yourself, me and my head or me and my body?

S

I would say you have one heck of a head job.

F

I’m on a hard menthol binge. Looking for more snuffs like toque menthol. A good, stiff menthol followed by medium-high nicotine. Any suggestions? So far want to order hedges, and more toque.

F

@Filledwith_anger for high nic and strong menthol i like 6p medicated 66, but it doesnt have the initial harshness of hedges etc. as a bit of a menthol fiend myself, i usually keep some 6p 66, JH wilson medicated 99, wilsons SM, hedges, Mcchrystals O&G, and Poschl redbull on hand for my varying moods. i found toque menthol recently and its nice, just doesnt keep up with the rest for all day use. i find it has a hint of lavender or something (mine atleast) which i find nice as my bedtime snuff if im after something other than gletscher prise. i also find wilsons SM500 nice and refreshing.

F

@firestarter0 thanks for the suggestions, I’ll add those to my order. I have tired 6 photo #6 and it’s really nice. Should try the others as well. We are right in humid-hot time, so everything with menthol is dwindling.

J

@SnuffH3ead so I finally went back that 6photo Motia, and gave it a second try, and did the 6photo and then shower, very effective! . It was very pleasant and really nice reset of the nose. I can now take the 6photo and I am enjoying it alot. Not a all day or everyday, but it definitely has a place with me.

S

Good stuff. Always glad to help someone!

H

@SnuffH3ad Oh… that’s an elephant! At first I thought that it was a poor quality freehand drawing of the state of Vermont!

J

@howdydave I thought it was Africa…

S

I have been snuffing for a few days now. Navy Scotch, G&H Lakeland, Ambassador, M4X, and a few other of the latter brand. Problem is I get super dehydrated! To the point where my sinuses shut and I’m screwed until about noon the next day. I bought a humidifier, increased my fluid intake, but still no dice. I snuff about 12-15 times a day and the fall weather had lowered the RH here in New England. Has this happened to anyone? I have scoured the forum and can’t find anyone with this issue. Does anyone ever get clogged from being dry? And could it be that I need a more moist snuff? The G&H are tap boxes and I suspect they are dry from shipping.

M

I find a coarse ground snuff, like Musinotabac, Maccoboy, the Sir Walter Scott and Abraxas offerings, etc. make my nose run like crazy.

Maybe I should try that. I have no snot or anything, just dry dry dry.

I find a coarse ground snuff, like Musinotabac, Maccoboy, the Sir Walter Scott and Abraxas offerings, etc. make my nose run like crazy.

M

also, menthol causes some mucus membrane swelling, clogging people up for a while…

S

That might be it. The M4X is crazy menthol, I go into a sneezing fit like never before when I try it. The Lakeland seems to be the kindest to me as of now.

F

I dont get clogged up by menthol.

H

Try Poschl’s Ozona President.

S

I actually have some on order Dave. I think I have this figured out. A combination of the low Rh here, doing way to much, having dried out snuff, and taking it to far into my sinuses. Thanks guys!

S

I need some suggestions on my next snuff order. Most of what I have stuffs me up, all the G&H tap boxes, anything with menthol and some Torque Lavender. That’s about 12 tins that I can’t use out of 15 I have. 6 Photo Special is very kind to me, Fubar Snafu, Navy Scotch, and 6 Photo #6 fall in that order of what I can use. What are some that I should try based on this?

M

Well, the rest of the Fubar line, Square scotch, Kailash maybe, White Elephant. Hard to say, given our noses are different, but that’s a lot of problem snuffs.

S

What about Viking Brown? Is that mentholated?

B

@sonarman have you tried wetting your fingers and snuffing the water off them? .

S

No, but I will!

G

Hi all, just wondering if someone would be able to give a beginner a bit of advice. I’ve made a few orders and recently one from MrSnuff (which came to England a lot faster than I thought) and have really (mostly) enjoyed trying all sorts of snuffs. Not been a huge fan of the menthol as it tends to irritate my skin a bit (although had a cold at the time - mental note, try again) tried FUBAR medic & Singleton’s Super. Really enjoying Toque vanilla, FUBAR Black Joe and Shot of Rum. I’m looking for something similar that I will like or completely different that you would recommend me trying. TL;DR My question is as there is such a vast array of snuffs on there could I get a few recommendations for what to order next? I’m just struggling to choose. Thanks in advance, Gew

Q: When I cut off your head what will you call yourself, me and my head or me and my body?

  1. You’ll be dead so a “me” would no longer exist. 2. In English we have no way to show possession (that I am aware of) except to employ “me” or one of it’s derivatives. 3. There is a bit of a problem though because for one to say anything implies that one exists which is impossible (see proposition 1). 4. So I believe we are forced to say that is “my body and my head” regardless of the absurdities, lol.
R

Newbie question. SP, what’s it stand for? If anything.

If “me” doesn’t exist than neither does “my” which is a derivative of me so by your own logic your answer makes no sense.

That answer is lost in the mists of time. There are many theories, no solid answers. Personally I believe it stands for “best type of snuff ever.”

W

Get yourself a bottle of decongestant. Something like Vicks sinex or one of the supermarkets cheaper and just as effective alternatives. It’s not supposed to be used on a long term basis but I find a drop per day in each nostril opens em up for most of the day.

R

Hedges tins. They come wrapped in some loose plastic, but no real seal. Should I transfer into baby jar? Or wrap in electric tape? Or what? I have one tin I’ve opened and one brand new still in the wrap.

S

@Reverend_Skulls I think its more personal preference than anything. but for me anything with a container that I feel will let air in or out gets transfered into glass jars and sealed. Personally I like to retain the factory freshness, but some may prefer to air/dry out their snuff. Also I think worth mentioning is I’ve read that light its bad for snuff so try to store it in a dark place

H

If you take a ride with Mr. Peabody on his “Wayback Machine” you will not get a clear answer… What you will find is “SP” burned onto some kegs of snuff being shipped from the New World to jolly old England. Does it stand for “Spanish Premium,” was it a manufacturer’s mark, was it an exporter’s mark, was it an invoice ID? Nobody is quite sure!

H

The other more knowledgeable members are correct I have heard numerous explanations from it meaning "Spanish" to do with the name of a port, but my memory fails me…

WoW - Mr. Peabody & Sherman and their WABAC machine. now that goes way back when there were only 3 stations on TV and in black and white.

I personally feel the seal on the hedges tin is ok as is if your using exclusivly, I tend to fill my snuff box each day with snuff of the day (or hr) and often discard any dregs of dust at end of the day. Having said that my other snuffs that I might use less I place the tins in a air tight plastic box in the cool cellar. Going down to fill my box, choose a snuff each day has become pleasurable habbit…

Well… I lived on Long Island (by New York City) at the time (late 50’s to early 60’s) and we got 5 stations. The 3 network stations (ABC, NBC and CBS), Mutual Broadcasting ran their flagship TV station out of NYC and an independent station.

Interestingly I and maybe others in uk would not have a clue what you chaps are talking about, however I am taking my kids to see a new version of said cartoon that is just on release at uk cinemas…you have probably had it out in USA months back!?

X

@Hoopei it comes from a cartoon series called ‘The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show’ that was rather more intelligent than its intended audience (children) and has a bit of a cult following now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\\_Rocky\\_and\\_Bullwinkle\\_Show You’ll note that it is known to Brits, as Herman’s Hermits derived their name from the show’s Sherman who was the time travelling dog’s assistant.

H

Mr. Peabody (a dog) had a pet boy named Sherman. The dog was a scientist who had a time machine in which he would take his pet boy back to interesting events in history. He explained the event an ended his lesson to Sherman with a pun that was based on an adult cliche, phrase or truism. I didn’t get many of the punch lines until I was a teenager. Rocky and His Friends had cartoons for grownups or intelligent children, it wasn’t just mindless entertainment. Along with Mr. Peabody, they had takeoffs on Aesop’s Fables, and Fairy Tales with a twist (called “Fractured Fairy Tales.”) I love them to this day!

Can they not pin this thread to the top?

I can un-announce it if its lost its usefulness, then it will drop like a normal thread.

I second the notion to un-announce

done

I wonder if the request meant to “unannounce” it or to permanantly keep it at the top of the list? The question can be interpreted both ways. e.g.; “Can’t they pin this thread to the top?” This thread didn’t stay at the top of the list before.

X

It was pinned to the top of the ‘Snufftaking Advice, Tips, and Techniques’ category not all discussions.

Ahhh… I see said the blind carpenter as he picked up his hammer and saw. Just an example of my humor and why it usually doesn’t work for people who have English as a second language. People whose primary language is English often don’t get my humor either!

X

Sorry, still don’t get it. The thread was always pinned to the top, and English is my first language.

Perhaps I can bring it back on track a little. I had been wanting to try snuff for almost a year now, but it was never that big a deal to me. At the St. Louis Pipe Show, I bought three tins and am in whole hog. So, here’s the big question: I get that you don’t snort into the sinus cavities, but that you sniff to the front of the nose. So where is that? To me, that means the upper part of the nose, but prior to entering the true sinus cavity. I mean the upper part one pinches just below the nasal protuberance in the skull. This seems to give me the best “kick.” Is this too far? Because the lower part of the nose doesn’t do anything that I can tell. Or am I confusing the rush (and yes, slight burn) with improper practice? Also, it’s hard when my nose runs not to snort the mucus like one does with a runny nose. Did that a couple of times without thinking. Oof.

B

@number_seven Looks like you got it. Just don’t let it run down your face; after some time using snuff you’ll find some snuffs don’t make your nose run where other’s do. I sometimes with a hard drip snort it up and spit it out.most of the time I will employ a tissue ,handkerchief, the curtains, or any available cloth >:)

N

@basement_shaman By virtue of the way I dress (dandified), I actually have a large assortment of hankies, so I’m not worried on that front. In fact, they’ll now all get used regularly, rather than a couple at a time, as pocket squares. Good to know I’m doing that part right. I must admit, I like that feeling in the upper nose. The biggest thing about wiping my nose is to remember to use a hanky and not my shirt sleeve (ewwwww!).

E

I haven’t experienced the drip, scratch that, not drip, THE nose run, yet. I’ve only been using schmalzlers so far. Do those types make you drip basement_shaman , or do you think I’m sniffing to much, or to little? I use about a dime’s area amount, about the height of a pea.

B

@Erik_the_Red Oh you’ll know the drip, you can taste it in your throat. Depends on the weather most of the time no nose run. But then again some snuffs open the flood gates. I been using mostly fine grind lately but will be rotating into course grinds more often. And believe it or no some artisan snuff actually made me sneeze.Totally caught me off guard what a mess With Schmalzler just shovel it in til it feels comfortable.Only you know your limit

X

I don’t like it in the upper part of my nose. Its too close to the sinus. Some will go there on its own though. A lot depends on the type of snuff too. Coarser snuffs will stay lower on their own and give a longer slow release of nic.

E

Has anyone tried adding some snuff when making Turkish coffee?

H

Nope!

I

Does anyone know if some types of snuff are less likely to make you sneeze? Like moist coarse snuffs? Moist fine snuffs? I would think I should be able to think this out but, I read that coarse snuffs causes more irritation which didn’t seem right to me I guess. My brother in law tries my snuff all the time but, sneezes, viciously. Sounds painful most of the time really.

J

are home made snuffs generally weaker than manufactured snuffs?
