It’s been abOut a week sice my order from mr snuff arrived, my first 3’tins of snuff have all been Pleasant thus far. I ordered two poschls brazil pros and ozona cherry. I also ordered a 25 gram tin of toque vanilla. I also bought a bullet on eBay but have found it’s only good at dispensing from the bottom. My preferred method so far is a pinch from the tin which I am still learning. I also dip 4 cans a week and smoke about a pack a week. I managed To get through one day with snuff only but didn’t make it any farther. I am enjoying it, is it possible to use snuff as a substitute for all other tobacco? I still feel the urge for a pinch of grizzly wintergreen even after two decent pinches of touque. any snuff recommendations would be helpful as well. I dont think any stores around here in Oregon carry. It so I need a little push in the right direction. Thanks for reading my first post, they will nof be so long
Snuff is definitely a better alternative to smoking. With the passage of time you can definately use snuff as a substitute for all tobacco products. Happy snuffing!!
Is there a good method to pinching toque directly from the tin? I find it hits my throat and sinuses occasionally
Just practice. I’ve found I hit my throat if I sniff with too much force. I probably should try a spoon for more precision in pinch size. It’s not easy to judge.
As someone who made the move from dip (Coppenhaggen fine 24/7, 10 years) to snuff here is what I learned: You are probably experiencing withdrawal from the dip habit, not the nic addiction. Separate your need for nicotine from your need for oral activity. For nicotine, use snuff only. If you need more a ‘hit’ switch to: 1) Toque Quit 2) US dry scotches (the fine grind lets the nic absorb faster) 3) White’s such as D.White (Indian) or White elephant. The grind is like baby powder. You should probably mix these with your regular snuff, 10-20% at first. 4) Use a method that gets the snuff higher up your nose but without hitting your throat. These range from using very controlled “sniffs while holding your breath” to the more exotic use of a bent straw where you ‘puff’ a cloud of snuff into your nose, a favorite of mine. WHILE using the snuff for nicotine, you have to keep your mouth busy. Find something to do with your mouth that doesnt cause cancer. Gum is the most popular method. Nicotine gum is an option but costs a lot. You have to teach your body that the ‘warm and fuzzys’ now come from your nose, not your mouth. This will take a while. Good luck!
I liked mint snuff when I quit smoking and I’m sure it would help even better trying to quit oral tobacco. In fact I read something about mint snuff, starting researching it and stumbled across nasal snuff by accident. I’m glad I did!
I used snuff to quit smoking, although I wasn’t a very heavy smoker (6-8 daily on a workday), and I did smoke lights. What I did was limit myself to one cigarette throughout the day, smoking half in the morning, and half in the afternoon, and using snuff inbetween. After a week, I cut that down to half a cigarette on my lunch break, then cut that out. As for the snuff flying to the back of your throat, it’s a common problem for newcomers (I still do it occasionally). Its basically just practice. Try taking in a deep breath before you snuff. I think Toque’s snuff’s have a rather fine grind anyway. Maybe try a Wilson’s of Sharrow, they’re generally a bit coarser
I’ve never smoked but I agree totally with Gsnuff. As an ex Copenhagen junkie I also found my cravings to be linked to my setting. For example, when I sat in front of my PC I always put a dip in my mouth. However, if I went out of town or stayed distracted in unfamiliar situations the cravings were far weaker and sometimes non-existent. I had no conscious intention of quitting my dip use, it just happened gradually as I began enjoying the nasal snuff more. Now I find it somewhat strange to orally use tobacco products which I have yet to rekindle any cravings for.
Dude, it took about a month before I really got the hang of using snuff. I think that snuff will help you use less dip/cigs until your technique gets better and you get more nicotine out of snuff. I would hold off on totally quitting dip/cigs until you feel satiated after a pinch. After a while I got more of a craving for snuff than anything else. Use the search bar for help with technique, etc… The best advice is just to sniff lightly. It takes a little bit to get better control of your nose.
As far as the hitting the nose and throat goes, I think that has been well addressed by previous posts; practice and before long you will get hang of it. For killing the urge to dip, you will find that after some time your craving will start to be for snuff rather than dip. It can be a gradual roller coaster of back and forth for awhile but eventually the snuff cravings will prevail. It might also help to try some snuffs that have a similar characteristic to the oral tobacco you were using. I would recommend Samuel Gawith Wild Duck, Black Rappee or any of their coarser and darker varieties, though perhaps not their more perfumed varieties (though I like them quite a bit). I think you will find some of these scents to be rather familiar. While these can be a little tricky and sometimes messy snuffs, the coarse grind does make it easier to get it into the right spot even with a harder, less nuanced sniff and therefore keeps it out of your sinus and throat. I hope this helps and good luck on the transition. Don’t give up if the dip/smoking cravings persist. They will fade in time. Welcome to a great community. There is a lot of great info on here for new snuffers, dig in and enjoy!
I gave up cigs a few days ago, and I find that snuff is giving me more of a buzz just today. After getting rid of the high-nic products like cigs and dip for a few days, your nicotine tolerance goes down. Now everytime I pinch a toast I get a buzz.
great guys thanks for all the advice and help.
Try swedish snus my friend… I used snus to quit smoking and I got into snuff shortly after. I take a good pinch then pop in some snus. The snuff hits faster and about the time it wears off the snus starts kicking in.
As much as I adore Toque, I don’t think they’re a good beginner brand. I struggled with them when I was a newbie and it took a few months to refine my technique so as not to cough on every pinch. I think newbies should start with Poschl and Wilson’s of Sharrow. Fruit snuffs and menthols are great for beginners. Also smoking, in my case, made snuffing more difficult. Once I gave up smoking my throat wasn’t nearly as sensitive and prone to coughing when snuffing. Get rid of those cancer sticks to fully enjoy snuff.
I have wanted to order some good snus but it’s pretty expensive after shipping and Oregon taxes. I had my cart full at northerner.com but after taxes and shipping I was looking at over 6 dollars a can. I haven’t found any other sites with snus. Oregon has a pretty steep tobacco tax, even when I was just going to order some kodiak dip it came out to over6 bucks per can and I can find it at a couple tobacco stores for just over 5.
SnusCentral, Buysnus, Premiumsnus all ship to the US. I use SnusCentral exclusively. Of course I write articles for their website so I’m biased, possibly.
Snuscentral looks good to me, I see that one of the local convenient stores near me now sells ettan snus portion and loose, think I’ll pick up a can or two!
I buy from snus.com. mostly use snus, but use snuff when I’m at home. edm
Perhaps something wintergreen in snuff would help since that is the flavour of Dip you use. Try WOS Crumbs of Comfort (wintergreen snuff). I second the suggestion for Toque Quit or an American Scotch like Navy Plain or Railroad Mills Plain for more nicotine.
Well it’s been just over a week and I have gone through half of 25 gram tin of toque and a few grams of the two poshl. I have dipped less than two cans and only smoked while visiting a friend, quite often I smoke more there as she smokes quite often. I guess I’m going to need to make another order soon, definitely going for the crumbs of comfort, a SP, dry scotch and maybe some others depending on suggestions. Here. You guys are alot of help. I also picked up a ettan portion today and am going to give that a try. If I like it I may make another order online, it was 6.50 in the PLAID pantry. Was going to try and kick all tobacco except snuff, but just don’t know if o can do it without having a nosefull all the time:)
You do know there are two versions of Crumbs Of Comfort, right? My apologies if you already know this but the Extra CoC is the same spearmint flavor just with more menthol. A lot of people don’t notice that the first time they order it. Extra CoC is one of my favorites, tho it can deliver quite a burn at times.
Crumbs of Comfort is spearmint, not wintergreen. The closest snuff to wintergreen is Checkerbery from Swisher. Not great, but ok. Regular CoC has no menthol, only Extra CoC has it. Its not straight spearmint though, it has other herbs maybe a touch of wintergreen. For straigt spearmint from Wilsons try Country Mint. Also, Gawith Hoggarth Sea Breezes has a portion of wintergreen to it, but it has other aromatic herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Quite different, but good.
The spearmint is pretty strong in the regular. It could even be mistaken for menthol at first. I’ve heard some claims that Golden Glow contained wintergreen but my experience with it was otherwise. Also, any used, plastic dip can that contained wintergreen will be sufficient to make your own wintergreen snuff. Just add any plain snuff and let it sit in the freshly emptied can with the lid on it for a week or so. I personally don’t care for wintergreen but find spearmint (and Toque Peppermint) to be more to my liking.
From what I’ve read in pipe tobacco making, using a bit of menthol oil to spark up a mint flavor is pretty common.
@Xander, You are right, spearmint. I have a lot of senior moments like that lately. I use CofC and when I do I know it is spearmint, but I get confused sometimes. When you get to be seventy, things slip.
Thanks spyro I didn’t know that. Lucky for me I found a tobacco shop that carries snuff, the conwood scotches and a few others mchrystals was listed on their web site but in the picture I saw all sorts of snuff. I am going to go there tomorrow and pick up a few. For the snus users I have a question, I tried a few ofthe ettan portions and the flavor is nice but it didn’t really feel like much nicotine. This place tomorrow sells General loose and I thought I would give that a try that’s the only snus other than ettan I can find locally, it’s 55 dollars for10 or 6 for one. I have heard loose may be more liked by former dip users. I asked about the stark variety but I guess it’s not legal within the U.S. I don’t want to place an online order yet though
Stark snus is certainly not illegal in the U.S., whoever told you that is full of it. However, it is true that the General stark varieties are not distributed in the U.S. That, however, is a marketing decision rather than a legal issue.
Oh guess I was mislead
Los snus is probably a good choice if you find the nicotine in portions to be inadequate. There is not a lot of snus in your standard 8mg portion, but with los you can use as much as you can fit in your lip. Thus, you can get a fair amount of nicotine, if that is your concern. Some find that los has better flavor. While I tend to prefer the convenience of portion snus, you should definitely try the los to see if it works for you. I do like Ettan, but it is rather subtle, Try the General Los, you might like it!
Thanks for the suggestion!
Order some odens extreme strong portion. Ordered mine from getsnus.com, in the mailbox in 3 days. If this doesnt give you a nic fix, nothing will…
My understanding … and i will verify in a few days … is that Swedish Match’s Lab06 kicks much stronger in nicotine over Extreme … which I have had and really don’t care for … but the nicotine doesn’t feel 22mg strong to me in the Extreme. Just my opinion.
sorry, missed the point of this thread in my previous post … first sly3904 … where are you? If you are lucky enough to be able to buy Ettan along with your General, and are stateside, you must reside in Pittsburgh, Portland or Boise, yes? And, fwiw, a “nicotine kick” builds with snus, much like snuff. Many do not feel a kick … while some do … what many feel is relief from their nicotine craving, as it is released slowly … so, given that you can get one of the best locally in Ettan … and should be able to get loose version of it too … I’d go with it. To gain a kick, pop in an Ettan OP or prilla and then snuff up some Scotch, Toast or Cheetah. That’ll get you right. I should note, I am very jealous of anyone that can walk into their gas station or local tobacco shop and grab some Ettan … by far my favorite snus. Hopefully the test markets in the US pan out and convince SwM to expand Ettan to all states. Will never have to order online again …
If you want a good nic hit try 36mg e-liquid in an e-cig, I think you can also get 48mg and 54mg, those are for mixing though, you must be a real nic fiend to vape them straight. 36 is just right, a nice buzz but not nauseating. Stefan
Yes you are right snuffbrant I do reside in Beaverton which is just a few miles outside of Portland. I visited 82nd pipe and tobacco today and picked up a can of general loose and a couple snuffs (wilsons tom buck and American snuff company honest scotch. I just tried the scotch and it packs quite a kick even a small pinch. Smokey in flavor as im sure most of you know, it kind of reminds me of a spicy copenhagen flavor. Not bad, definitley not what I am used to snuffing so far. I will try the Wilsons in a bit. Walrus1985 I have used ecigs in the past but didnt have much luck with them. THe nic is good but i thought they were kind of a hassle and I didn’t really care for the liquid. I used a smoke 51 and I can’t remember the name of the other one. It was black with a refillable atomizer and a manual push button. Never got as high up as 36 mg though. I think the strongest I used was 24 mg marlboro juice. I am going to try to learn how to form a pris later and give the los a try. tonight. Thanks all to your suggestions and advice.
Well an update on the pris making, I think Im going to visit my plaid pantry where they sell prismasters along with ettan. I find i am wasting more loose than i can get into the pris.
Don’t worry about forming the perfect prilla. Try the “hillbilly” technique: grab a pinch and just shove it in your upper lip. Works fine, and I find that it is much more flavorful than a tightly compressed prilla.
I tried the prismaster. The guy working gave it to me for free. I made a small pris with it. Small at least compared to what I’ve seen on YouTube. I’ve had it in my upper lip for almost an hour and it seems to be working. Also had a couple pinches of snuff, Tom buck and the honest. The wilsons is quite good, don’t know If the scotch could be a regular I may have that tin forever. The general is good with the citrus but when I make another snus purchase I would have to try the loose ettan.
I handbake my loose snus, sly … you get adept at it the more you practice. Ettan hand bakes very well … and you won’t be disappointed in Ettan Loose … a giant size prilla will give you a nice nic dose and will last an hour or so if packed tight enough not to slide … and yep, i am jealous, just hope Ettan Test trial goes really well. I cannot wait to walk in a grab some from a local gas station here in Ohio. Cheers!
@sly3904: Honest if fairly mild for a Scotch, with a good amount of smoke flavour. Brutons is the highest in nicotine, second is Red Seal but it is a sweet snuff, and tied for third are Navy Plain and Railroad Mills Plain. Those sweet snuffs like Red Seal do havoc on my sinuses.
y Sorry iPhone seems to want to double post
