I just received some more tins from Toque. I realize another benefit to the screw-on lids is when your tins get bashed in transit. All my snuff stayed safely inside the bashed-in tin. With a regular tin, I suspect it would have been much worse. However one time I did get some Wilson’s tins bashed during shipping but amazingly the tape was enough to hold the lid on and I didn’t lose snuff that time either, so who knows…
I’d like to add that the Ozona Raspberry 5g tin, which was the first snuff I ever bought, seems to be and excellent design, particularly if able to be opened and refilled (tbd) with another snuff when empty.
You could refill these, just make a small funnel, and lighty send it through the hole. Tom502
Z_2K, the Ozona tin can be opened easily. I’ve opened all of mine because the snuff is moist and there will always be some snuff left when it seems to be empty. Use a small screwdriver to carefully lever it open, refill and press the lid back on. Make sure to work over a piece of paper when opening, you don’t want to spill what’s left in there!! Works like a dream.
in my opnion bigblue you remembered that because well it was gods way of teaching you how to fish instead of just giving you some fish.
The circular motion thing works great. Thanks snuffbox for thinking to mention it. My snuff stays fresher in the Wilsons tin if I give the lid a little twist when closing it. It seem to close tighter, so is less likely to pop open too.
Don’t thank me, guys. It was either my snuffing idol/mentor Snuff Head or ErmTony who enlightened me on the topic!
It was Snuff head
Thanks all.
Just received a few new Wilsons tins from Nicotine Rush and what a waste. The Irish High toast went all over the place. They need to find a better way. Is anyone from Wilsons on this site? Are they listening??
You need to carefully place them on a piece of paper, and then slowly open them, so you can get all the excess that falls on the paper, and drop it back in the can. Of course if one has extra different containers, put it in those. Tom502
@ bigbuyer: I think its posted above, but try dropping the tin so it lands flat 2 or 3 times from about 3-4 inches above a table. Also try sliding it rapidly back and forth smoothly on the table while keeping flat. Also put paper under when opening like Tom says. Also good idea to decant about half into another container. True, no one should have to go to all this hassle to prevent losing snuff, but until Wilson’s puts them in Toque style tins I think we have to put up with it. They may not be listening, or they may. They do supposedly have a good customer response on their email on their website. Maybe the group could draft a letter we can all sign?
I wouldn’t worry about losing some when opening the tin. They contain more than the advertised weight from my experience. Wilsons aren’t the only ones who use such tins, McChrystals do as well.
The problem with these tinsis that the lids are in a dome form. The snuff can thus move to above the tin’s rim. Toque lids are flat and the snuff can only go as high the rim of the tin.
true enough sandy, but I still hate having the snuff all hanging over the edge on one side every time I open the tin. McChrystals bother me just as much, but since there are only 3 of those in my collection and 20+ Wilson’s I tend to think of them as “Wilsons’ Tins” more of a nuisance than a big worry. I really don’t have any complaints about their snuff quality or variety.
I’ve never had a problem with the Wilsons tins, nor the Samuel Gawith that are the same. But beware recently I’ve come across new Wilsons tins of snuff with extremely sticky plastic sealing tape that leaves the sticky on the edge of the tin. It is so easy for the tin to stick to your fingers when first opening and it would be so easy to drag the tin with your fingers and up tip it.
Thanks for the suggestions. I still think they need to change their tins so that they work for us. I am sure it is an expensive thing to do. Is there anyone from Wilsons reading our comments??
Each to his own of course, but I don’t really have an issue with Wilsons’ tins. I find the Toque tins more problematic as I always have trouble with the threading. I reckon the best tins around are the new style G. Smith & Sons ones which pop on and off and have a little white gasket which keeps the snuff nice and fresh.
The G. Smith and Sons tins are good and been around many years for J & H Wilson’s snuff, and many pipe tobaccos. I’ve just opened an old tin on J & H Top Mill you could hear the air rush in, as fresh as the day it was milled, and it doesn’t have the present Health Warning!
It’s not a big deal to me, but with the Wilsons and McChrystals cans, I must place them under paper, because snuff comes out around the sides. I like the Toque best, but like any screw on cap, sometimes you may not get the threads together just right, but that’s less a problem than the snuff coming out through the sides. The Dholakia made smash cans being all plastic, I think hold up very well, and their lids stay on good. I actually like them, and think their shape, and label designs are cool. As a tapper mainly, though, I still prefer the tap cans, but I like the Toque cans overall best, now I think of it, as they are more universal, as not everyone is a tapper, and I can pinch a line on my hand just as easy.
