Problem with Wilsons tins.

I just received my Wilsons sampler in the mail from Mr. Snuff a few days ago. I tested all of the flavours, and when I went back to the one’s that I particularly liked, I couldn’t open the tins! They seem to be jammed or perhaps I can’t get the right grip on them? I have never had this problem with any other snuffs, and it is very inconvenient because I want to enjoy them. Has anyone else had this problem? If anyone could offer any advice, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and regards. ~Snuffy

Maybe you have a corroted tin !!

I find that happens when the tin is corroded. Take a piece of fine sandpaper (emery paper) in each hand to increase your grip. When you’ve opened the tin, check for rust, usually on the tin it self. If badly rusted, dump the tin (make sure to save the contents!!). Buy some Toque 10gram tins of snuff. Once you’ve emptied the tins, keep them as snuffboxes. They’re perfect and do not rust.

I did not notice any rust on the tins. I think that the tins were so full (to the brim and then some) that some snuff most likely got into the threads on the lid and tin. I will try the knife, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll give the freezer a shot. Thanks for the suggestions. ~Snuffy

somtimes with the finer wilsons enough snuff gets in the grove between the lid and bottom that it becomes somewhat stuck. The worst time I punched a hole in the top and dumped it into a sandwich bag.

I have had the same problem in the past. Not only with Wilson’s, but Samuel Gawith as well. I think its caused by a little snuff getting between the lid and the tin. Be careful if you use a knife. I did that once before, and ended up bending the lid a little. Now that tin leaks a little.

Yep, the knife works…with a little prying. There is alot of snuff stuck between the lid and the tin, which makes sense, considering how much snuff they jam into these tins (not complaining…). Thanks for the help, and if the knife stops working as well, I’ll let you guys know what does end up working. ~Snuffy

The snuff is super fresh. According to Wilson’s they made up that batch right before shipping it. I had the same problem with several I tried and I tend to agree with the idea that they are overfull and snuff gets jammed down teh side. i actually prefer the less filled McChrystal’s tin for that reason. Same size tin, 1.25g less snuff. However, less spillage and less sticking of lid. MrSnuff

Yeah, my can of Irish High Toast 22 was just about overflowing. Even after using some of it, I still have issues getting it open and not making a mess. Having a piece of paper under it helps a lot.

@Farley- That works much better! Just squeezing the sides opens it right up. Thanks for the suggestion! ~Snuffy

Thanks Farley it does work! Now I can trim my finger nails now…

I like using the Wilsons tins but, less Toque tins seem to dent too easy. I break things easy.

Most tins from Wilson’s seem to open easily for me though there are a few where I gotta pull out two pairs of channel lock pliers to open lol

While the Toque tins do dent easier, I’d rather decant my WoS snuff into an air tight bottle or a reclaimed Toque tin any day.

I think I need the titanium snuff vials. If I break that, I will consider being less rough on things.

I think Sir Walter Scott’s has the best tins I have encountered so far. It’s like a strong Wilsons of Sharrow tin with threading. I do think the labeling isn’t the best but, I paid for snuff not advertising. The label looks fine but, the edges are too long and, I am getting some really good wear on the stuff it was printed on.
