Not bad but by far not the greatest toast. Both Irish no.22 and Irish D leave it far behind in my opinion.
@Captainblackboogers I’d second that but add Toque Natural Toast. Now the SWS and Old Mill toasts, that’s a separate subject IMHO.
Actually, I am not crazy about them, just too fine and powdery. I think why I like most Toques so much is how they nail both the grind and moisture level which I know is not really pertinent to this thread as HDTs are supposed to be the way they are…l
I don’t hate it. I don’t love it either.
Tried HDT, suffered through a whole tin in hopes that at some point I’d get it. It unfortunately reminds me of electronics letting out their magic smoke. So far the only toast I like is Toque’s Lime Toast.
I tried some out again yesterday. I could get into it. It’s sort of like a lighter and more delicate Irish 22, like 22s
sweet and effeminate little brother, or, to put it another way, if irish 22 was a recipe made with milk, IHT would be
the same recipe but with cream.
I still like 22 better though.
Despite snuffing for nearly 15yrs I’ve never actually tried HDT. My bad or good choice?
I think you should try it.
It’s ok, but I prefer coarse and moist. I understand liking toasts. They are not my cuppa, however.
I’ve been giving it a good chance the last few days and i must say HDT is very nice, a creamy, delicate, moreish all day snuff. It’s been my main since i decided to give it a chance and took a half full box of it to work the other day.
It’s easy to forget how good HDT is. I think it has slowly become my favourite toast. As you say, @Captainblackboogers, that delicate creaminess is unique in the toast category and, to my nose, takes it a notch above the rest. Especially when it’s really fresh… yum. Though Toque Natural Toast could almost replace it, if it had to.
Well, I have a technique with all snuff that I have to follow because I have quite sensitive sinus issues and most snuff on its own will create a problem. High Dry Toast in not exception. For me I have a base Snuff as a mixer and that is Top Mill, I then add the deired snuff to the base snuff (approx 2 spoons of top mill to one of the desired snuff) and enjoy Top Mill with the snff. So for High Dry I mix it with top mill and do the same for Crumbs of Comfort. I then avoid the blocked nose caused by using a single type.
I really like the HDT as it is. The most impressive thing is its complexity. The aroma and scent differs in terms of weather and if it is moist out there or a more dry air.
It is not a perfect snuff, but it has such a wonderful base tobacco.
I almost think about getting a large tin. The last three 20 gram tins went through in half a year.
I think its the least toasty toast ive had, by English snuff standards anyway. Id say Irish d is first in toast flavor, then Irish 22, which seems nuttier but not as smoky. Theyre all good, if thats what your into.
@Snuffalufagis have you tried the Sir Walter Scott’s Lundy Foot?
A great toast!
@tobaccobob I have! It’s very good, as well as 50/50 and st james parish (which I’m currently involved in a serious binge with). I found the Havana toast kinda lacking… Unfortunate. I’m anticipating an order with a tin of mull of oa and latakia for the first time as well. What got me hooked on toasts was honestly toque natural toast, which I have a large stock of lol! Its wonderful to say the least, I think it has a great balance of smokey, nutty, and buttery, and is very easy to take in large quantity, for me at least.
I’m mostly a fine toast person, and bought my first tin of HDT this year. It wasn’t my favorite but as I ran out of everything else I was left with the tin and nothing else. I got over myself and actually learned to like it. I’ve been able to take fine snuffs for a while now but can imagine people less acquainted with them having trouble with the learning curve.
@Snuffalufagis I havent tried the 50/50 yet.Is it very close to St.James Parish?
It is, but I get a bit of vinegar after a few minutes. I especially smell it on my fingers after a few pinches… I thoroughly enjoy it but my wife gets kinda weirded out when she can smell it on me lol
Thank you for your answer my friend!
Now,the wife’s disapproval is a sign that I’m going to like it very much!
