Wilsons of Sharrow what are your favourites

"hate to disagree buttttttttttttt, queens and toms not only have extremely different grinds the buck being much coarser and buck is also a darker color. Furthermore, tom is flavored with citron and queens just stronger sp. " All the SPs use oil derived from the peel of Citrus Bergamia which is exclusive to Reggio-Calabria in southern Italy. The top note is lemon leaving a lingering scent similar to neroli. It blends very well with lavender which is also used in the these blends. With Queens Extra Strong/Tom Buck the greater pungency owes to an enhancement of the additives only. The grind (as well as the base tobacco) in most of Wilsons snuffs is identical. After the flour is returned from the atom mill it is it is kept in barrels in the snuff store to mature. Only later are essential oils added to create a particular flavour which is then marketed under a different name. In the case of Tom Buck and Queens Extra Strong, however, the grind, the tobacco and the flavouring are all identical. But don’t take my word for it - ask Sharrow for yourself if they are different. Either email them from their site or contact Carol Walker Carol@sharrowmills.com and they will confirm that there is no difference save for the name.

I take your word for it, they obviously make no secret of it. Whilst they might not deny it though, unless I’ve missed it, it doesn’t say this anywhere on their website, which I just find irritating. Not wanting to lose an old name is just business double speak for not wanting to lose sales I guess.

If you’re in doubt about Tom Buck and Queens being original, switch to TOQUE Original. It’s written on the tin and there is only ONE Original, so it’s got to be original!!! And the taste? For me, a touch above Tom Buck although I do like the latter and use it a lot. I’ve never tasted Queens.

I’ve only tried the tom and original I actualy like the tom better. Stronger scent and I love the grind it’s a perfect medium grind in my opinion. Though one snuff no one seems to talk of much is spearmint plus and honey menthol both are must trys in my opnion. I think the spearmint plus is like the ozona spearmint but less candy and artifical.

rose and apricot are two of my favorites. If you want a non-mentholated apricot it’s the tops in my opninion.

I’ve ordered some Honey Menthol and waiting for it. Will try Apricot and Spearmint. For a rose snuff, I stick to DHOLAKIA Ganga. And I agree, the citrus smell in the Tom is stronger, that’s why I alternate between Tom and Original.

Pieter, I think you will love the honey menthol. It’s superb!

Unless I’m mistaken the best deal for Toque is from their own website where you may purchase five 25gr tins for Ā£11.69. This works out at (453.592/125)*11.69 = Ā£42.42 - a staggering 72% price increase on Ā£24.47 - and this doesn’t include post & packaging which is inclusive with Wilsons. Not having yet tried Toque Original I can’t say whether it is 72% better than Wilsons in taste, but it is more expensive. (In mitigation one notes that the registered office for Toque snuff is Berwick-upon-Tweed. Now Berwick-upon-Tweed, as any historian will tell, is still officially at war with Russia (Crimean War) as the 1853 war declaration included the separate status of the town - Britain, Ireland, Berwick-upon-Tweed and all British Dominions. However the same town was not listed in the 1856 Treaty of Paris. The difficulty of exporting from a war-zone might explain the cost hike. :<)

"You are mistaken. I was just on the toque website and 400g costs as follows: 400g Original Economy Bag Price: £29.99 inc Vat Price: £26.08 excl Vat " That sounds much more tempting. Thanks for that.
