I had run out of McChrystals O&G and was looking for somewhere that sells the extra large tin so i placed an order yesterday with My Smoking Shop, today the order arrived damn quick service for sure. As it seemed rude to order only one tin i ordered a WoS Best SP 25g and WoS Best Dark 25g as i had not tried these and they are both excellant and fall into that small category of all day snuffs for me. This has set me thinking what else am i missing out on from WoS. I have only had Tom Buck, Crumbs of Comfort, Apricot, Prime Minister of which my favourite is Tom Buck. Have been considering getting Queens Extra Strong and Grand Cairo but would love some recommendations from those in the know.
The Queens Extra Strong ranks with the Tom Buck in my opinion. Very similar if not identical and very nice indeed. I found the Grand Cairo to be less to my taste. I’m also very partial to their Brunswick. It’s rich, dark and only slightly floral. Burgundy is another good, fairly plain one. Finally I reckon the IHT No 22 is not to be missed.
crumbs rocks, Tom Buck is great. I really like Royal George and recomend everyone try it if for no other reason that it’s a big freak.
Tom Buck, Burgundy, IHT22, Prime Minister, Best SP, Best Dark, these are my favourite WoS snuffs. I’ve tried Wallflower but I found it a bit “dusty”. Irish Coffee tastes like nothing, no flavour at all and very little nicotine. Dry Orange was to dry for my taste. CoC are very similar to Prime Minister but I prefer the latter, can’t really say why. Maybe makes me feel like Winston Churchill!!
My favourite so far from WoS is Royal George - very decadent, sweet and floral. Crumbs of Comfort is fine if you like spearmint lots. Aniseed Extra is very invigorating whilst walking the dog with plenty of menthol.
Some of the WoS snuffs I enjoy: Strawberry SP Silver Best SP Best Dark Strasbourg Brunswick Apricot Cinnamon is worth a try as well.
@ Troutstroker, whats the SP Silver like as i can’t find a review of that one.
My favorite four, in no particular order. Best SP IHT No.22 Lemon Grove Blackberry and Rum
Like Troutstroker I like The Strawberry Best SP & Strasburg.
A medium moist snuff with a hint of mediterranean citrus fruits. The same as Best SP except more finely ground.
Thanks for the info i have placed an order for the following Strasbourg 25g Lemon Grove 25g SP Silver 25g Queens Extra Strong 25g Raspberry 25g
This list could get really long, so I’ll just put my absolute favorites Royal George Prime Minister Best SP Tangerine Lemon Grove Strasbourg Jasmine French Carotte
How about the short list of the Wilsons of Sharrow snuffs that you guys did not like? I have none.
If I ever find one I’ll be sure to make a list of that one
The ones I don’t like are the menthol ones and the those with peppermint in them. But I know I’m unusual in that.
I’ve had good luck with all but one of the WoS lines that I’ve tried so far. I really like their Grand Cairo, Menthol Plus, and Best SP. Also have good impressions from SM 500, SM Blue, Cherry Menthol, Super Menthol and Extra CoC. Only one I didn’t care for was Rum and Blackberry. But I reserve the right to change my opinions later as time goes by, snuff has a way of drifting around like the weather when it comes to tastes and appreciation. I’d refer you to some of the more specific discussion topics that go into depth on the different blends.
ive only found one that i really dislike and thats the rum and blackberry, the sp’s i find very similar whatever the name and generally just use the best sp these days. for a long while i had half pound drums of three of their sp’s on rotation and usually couldn’t detect much difference. ive read more than once - and one occasion someone on another site claiming to have inside knowledge - that queens and tom are the same product, period. hard to prove that as only two members of the wilson family at a time know the flavouring secrets apparently.
I don’t like the Wisons Apricot i have because it has absolutely no apricot scent what so ever but perhaps mine is just a bad tin
I never understood why people say that TB and Queen’s are the same? To me they are definitely not. TB is very heavy on the bergamot and has a much darker color than Queens. Queens I think, is almost exactly like SP but stronger on the flavor and the nicotine.
I always thought they were very different too. I reckon Queens might be a finer ground TB, they seem to smell very similar in the tin but completely different in the nose.
maybe its a snuff urban myth? i cant remember personally as queens is one of theirs ive not used
The Wilsons Apricot is definitely amazing if you get a good tin. I had an old tin and it was even amazing. Keep at it, Big Al. Some of these take a bit of time to grow on you.
I have many I like but my top Wilsons are S.M. 500, Honey Menthol, Peppermint, Aniseed Extra, S.M. Blue. I would like to try Prime Minister since Crumbs is too sweet for me.
@ Snuffbox - seriously the Apricot i have has no scent or flavour at all, nothing, nada, zilch. Very sad really as i love apricot snuff and its put me off trying another Wilsons Apricot
Wow that’s difficult to understand. I guess the guys will have to point you to a stronger apricot.
Get the Grand Cairo, I don’t think you will regret it. My other Wilsons favorites are Jockey Club, SP Best, Best Dark, and Honey Menthol.
Crumbs of comfort , Royal George and Jockey Club
Tom Buck v Queens Extra Strong Queens Extra Strong (formerly Queens) is now identical with Tom Buck and has been since the name change. The same mixture is simply added to tins with different labels. Wilsons could not decide which of these two very long established names to delete from their list and therefore kept them both. No inside knowledge is required to appreciate this fact. If in doubt then contact Wilsons themselves from their web-site for confirmation and you will be told exactly what you read here.
I thought queens was a finer grind. Is that not true???
Tom Buck and Queens have, for several centuries, always been associated with S.P. That the names differ suggests to the user that there must be a subtle difference. However, they are identical in all respects save the name.
Best SP Grand Cairo Crumbs of Comfort Tom Buck Lemon Grove
Thank you for the welcome, FarleyFlavors.
Sometimes with snuff I’ll find I’ve gotten a few tins that are drasticly diffrent then what I’am used to. I got one tin of tom where the grind was much finer (still coarse for a sharrow snuff) and slightly lighter. The flavour was definatly effected. Must try queens.
"hate to disagree buttttttttttttt, queens and toms not only have extremely different grinds the buck being much coarser and buck is also a darker color. Furthermore, tom is flavored with citron and queens just stronger sp. " All the SPs use oil derived from the peel of Citrus Bergamia which is exclusive to Reggio-Calabria in southern Italy. The top note is lemon leaving a lingering scent similar to neroli. It blends very well with lavender which is also used in the these blends. With Queens Extra Strong/Tom Buck the greater pungency owes to an enhancement of the additives only. The grind (as well as the base tobacco) in most of Wilsons snuffs is identical. After the flour is returned from the atom mill it is it is kept in barrels in the snuff store to mature. Only later are essential oils added to create a particular flavour which is then marketed under a different name. In the case of Tom Buck and Queens Extra Strong, however, the grind, the tobacco and the flavouring are all identical. But don’t take my word for it - ask Sharrow for yourself if they are different. Either email them from their site or contact Carol Walker Carol@sharrowmills.com and they will confirm that there is no difference save for the name.
I take your word for it, they obviously make no secret of it. Whilst they might not deny it though, unless I’ve missed it, it doesn’t say this anywhere on their website, which I just find irritating. Not wanting to lose an old name is just business double speak for not wanting to lose sales I guess.
If you’re in doubt about Tom Buck and Queens being original, switch to TOQUE Original. It’s written on the tin and there is only ONE Original, so it’s got to be original!!! And the taste? For me, a touch above Tom Buck although I do like the latter and use it a lot. I’ve never tasted Queens.
I’ve only tried the tom and original I actualy like the tom better. Stronger scent and I love the grind it’s a perfect medium grind in my opinion. Though one snuff no one seems to talk of much is spearmint plus and honey menthol both are must trys in my opnion. I think the spearmint plus is like the ozona spearmint but less candy and artifical.
rose and apricot are two of my favorites. If you want a non-mentholated apricot it’s the tops in my opninion.
I’ve ordered some Honey Menthol and waiting for it. Will try Apricot and Spearmint. For a rose snuff, I stick to DHOLAKIA Ganga. And I agree, the citrus smell in the Tom is stronger, that’s why I alternate between Tom and Original.
Pieter, I think you will love the honey menthol. It’s superb!

Unless I’m mistaken the best deal for Toque is from their own website where you may purchase five 25gr tins for £11.69. This works out at (453.592/125)*11.69 = £42.42 - a staggering 72% price increase on £24.47 - and this doesn’t include post & packaging which is inclusive with Wilsons. Not having yet tried Toque Original I can’t say whether it is 72% better than Wilsons in taste, but it is more expensive. (In mitigation one notes that the registered office for Toque snuff is Berwick-upon-Tweed. Now Berwick-upon-Tweed, as any historian will tell, is still officially at war with Russia (Crimean War) as the 1853 war declaration included the separate status of the town - Britain, Ireland, Berwick-upon-Tweed and all British Dominions. However the same town was not listed in the 1856 Treaty of Paris. The difficulty of exporting from a war-zone might explain the cost hike. :<)
"You are mistaken. I was just on the toque website and 400g costs as follows: 400g Original Economy Bag Price: £29.99 inc Vat Price: £26.08 excl Vat " That sounds much more tempting. Thanks for that.
