Hello, Well, I’m posting for a tip or two to put me on the path. My snuff history and preferences are very much in the area of Pöschl and Bernard, strong and distinct flavours. Now that I’ve tried a few WoS I’m still struggling to appreciate them. To be blunt, they all have this same dusty non-flavour to me. It might just be my personal problem with the super fine, blonde English type snuffs but I want to give them a chance. I’ve tried Burgundy, Kendal Brown, F&T Macouba. For comparison, the Morlaix is the first one that tasted like something discernible and likeable. Is it just me and my personal taste or have others had a similar experience with some snuffs just tasting like dusty nothing?
@Kiwi78 I sympathise with ‘dusty nothing’ to some extent, and I can see why you would come to that conclusion if your introduction to snuff was via Germany, as it were. In my experience, however, WoS snuffs do not keep well, especially in small tins, and I wonder if that might be part of your problem. I don’t know where you are, but if you are in a position to buy direct from Wilsons then I would suggest you do so. If you have to buy retail, then get 25g tins. As to flavour, try Brunswick (black, coarse and moist), Tom Buck (heavily flavoured SP-style), Best Dark (moist, scented and - oddly enough - dark) and Jockey Club (very powerful and distinct scent). EDIT: I’ve just seen your ‘Introductions’ post. It is possible that a selection box might have been hanging around for a while - perhaps since last Christmas… Wilsons might well ship to NZ, although I don’t know what your Customs people are like. If you order again via MrSnuff then go for 25g tins!
Thanks for your reply. I am in New Zealand (where selling snuff is illegal, owning and using it however is not), so I order from Mr Snuff online. It usually only takes ten days to arrive so I haven’t had issues with moisture or consistency yet. I enjoy traditional, conservative snuffs which are often quite coarse. But I’m not giving up just yet. Like I said, the WoS Morlaix is already a step forward. My next orders will probably be GH or SG. I also found that I need to adjust my technique since those WoS need to be snuffed more carefully than a Poschl or Bernard to avoid having them in the back of my throat.
The thing about not liking a snuff to begin with is that you can have very different feelings about it when you go back to it again after some time. I think most of us have hated a snuff then loved it. Keep the ones you have and try them again in a few months. Their best, in my view, is Rose of Sharrow - one snuff I am never without - moist, medium grind and a sublime flavour.
I agree with Justin, sounds like the snuff is old and has gone stale. Those assortment boxes aren’t big sellers and has probably been sitting around for months or even years before you bought it.
Everything needs to be snuffed more carefully than a Poschl
Oh is the P word unmentionable around these parts? I didn’t know. ;-))
Oh it is perfectly fine. I just never met a snuff so hard to mess up taking. I have 5 myself.
That’s where it gets interesting because I enjoy the coarse sort of types. I’ve spent years with Poschl and Bernards and developed my snuffing technique based on them. With those very very fine English ones I feel like a beginner again because they often make me cough or sneeze which Poschls never do. It’s a learning curve, I guess, but I thought I had it. Picking from a little tin is very messy anyway, compared to those handy little boxes. In short, when I’ve used the WoS up, I don’t think I’ll buy them again.
@Kiwi78 There are dozens of types of snuff and if moist & oiled is what you like, then enjoy it! There are plenty of members on here that ONLY snuff toasts or American Scotches. WoS does make Brunswick which is very moist and may be to you liking, it has a very SP-like aroma (orange zest plus orange blossoms) thus the aroma without the dryness. F&T makes moister snuffs than the one you mention Santo Domingo and Princes are worth a shot. I know this will horrify the purists but you could add oils to the dry snuffs you like so as to enjoy them more, there are several how-tos on this site that will help you if this is of interest.
All the GH ones I’ve tried are a similar consistency to Wilson’s standard grind, though a silkier feel, with the exception of their version of Kendal Brown (which wasn’t as nice as the SG version, it seemed a bit ‘wet dog’ to me, a nice enough scent if I want to bring back memories of my lovely old Collie cross, but not an everydayer by any means). A lot of the SG darker snuffs are coarser grinds, KB, for instance, and Wild Duck is a gorgeous, dark peppermint scent, finer than KB but certainly heavier than WoS.
