Mine was Fribourg & Treyer’s Dr. James Robertson Justice’s Mixture. 44 years ago. A firm favourite even now.

Ronald Welch. What a wonderful children’s author. I read every one

I’d very much like to read them all again to rekindle fond memories. The only Ronald Welch book I still possess is ‘For the King’ - a first edition civil war drama borrowed from my school library. I located it today and checked the yellowed library label: it was due for return in Michaelmas Term 1963.

Nice! He was a remarkable writer. He really brought history to life. Bowman of Crecy was my favourite. When i was a small boy in short trousers I wrote to him, as I did to many authors, and he replied. A very nice letter.

I wonder if any children read him today?

Best wishes,

Graeme

Yes, Graeme - I noticed that reissue collection going for £278. It’s a tempting purchase - especially as the original hardcover books cost around that much each. I read as far as ‘Captain of Foot’.

Because his books have not been reprinted it’s unlikely that youngsters have read any which is a shame as the stories are embedded in historical fact. They are as informative as they are entertaining, not to mention descriptions of snuff and snuff-taking in three of them. By ‘Captain of Foot’ snuff has been supplanted by cigars as I recall.

Anyway, last night I started on my overdue library book ‘For the King’ : Cambridge, 1642 …

My first snuff was Smith’s Garden Mint, I think. I usually go for plain or mentholated snuffs these days, but I still have a soft spot for anything minty.

Gletcherprise. It’s a nice introduction but I have no interest in having any more of it. “When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But, when I became a man, I put away the things of a child.”

Nowadays I prefer Gold Label, Amostrinha, or most anything from Rosinski.

Red Bull from Greens of Leeds, I think. “Are you 18?”, they asked, “Yes” I lied.

Lowenprise was the snuff that popped my nose cherry 3 months ago. First time is the special you know?

Back in '96 I have no idea what band it was some kid brought it to school. I remember it was non menthol and bone dry semi sweet. Never could find it anywhere for years until I looked online and found Mr Snuff. My first order was Janta Cafe, Jip, Redbull, SNUV Snow, Poschl Go with Original, and McChrystals OnG. Been full speed ahead ever since.

I was trying to quit cigarettes and read about snuff so I took some of my RYO American Spirit cigarette tobacco and pulverized it in a coffee grinder. After my first sniff I was a fan.

Never went to Greens but buy from Smoke-king and they’re amazing.

I absolutely loved your story! So, what is your everyday snuff now?

Greens was so good. I used to look at the website then pop in with a handwritten list of 5 or 6 snuffs I wanted to try. They’d disappear somewhere round the back for a while whilst I waited, breathing in the wonderful smell and watching the old blokes buying pipe tobacco and young lads buying “your cheapest cigarettes”.

Once I decided to buy some twist tobacco to chew, complete unaware I needed to spit and proceeded to be quite unwell in an alley just off brigate.

A fellow pipe smoker shared McCrystal’s Original and Genuine. I went out and bought that. I enjoy mentholated snuff.

My first snuff was a true curiosity that I bought in the famous Keflavik airport in Iceland. It was some 10 years ago. It was a 10g plastic tin which stated that the product was manufactured in Denmark (strange enough, since snuff is not used in Denmark as far as I know).
The stuff smelled like dung. It brought to me childhood memories of visiting stables. It made me think if it was… worth the effort. Of course I sneezed like it was real dung! But in the end I liked that smell.
At some point I wrongly thought that the snuff had gone stale and I threw it out. However, today I tried something that reminded me precisely of that legendary first snuff of mine:

Welcome back, dung-like smell. My nose salutes you.
