WoS sample pack, 20 tap tins of varying flavors. Some i enjoyed, other not so much.
Mine was Fribourg & Treyerâs Dr. James Robertson Justiceâs Mixture. 44 years ago. A firm favourite even now.
Ronald Welch. What a wonderful childrenâs author. I read every one
Iâd very much like to read them all again to rekindle fond memories. The only Ronald Welch book I still possess is âFor the Kingâ - a first edition civil war drama borrowed from my school library. I located it today and checked the yellowed library label: it was due for return in Michaelmas Term 1963.
Nice! He was a remarkable writer. He really brought history to life. Bowman of Crecy was my favourite. When i was a small boy in short trousers I wrote to him, as I did to many authors, and he replied. A very nice letter.
I wonder if any children read him today?
Best wishes,
Graeme
Yes, Graeme - I noticed that reissue collection going for ÂŁ278. Itâs a tempting purchase - especially as the original hardcover books cost around that much each. I read as far as âCaptain of Footâ.
Because his books have not been reprinted itâs unlikely that youngsters have read any which is a shame as the stories are embedded in historical fact. They are as informative as they are entertaining, not to mention descriptions of snuff and snuff-taking in three of them. By âCaptain of Footâ snuff has been supplanted by cigars as I recall.
Anyway, last night I started on my overdue library book âFor the Kingâ : Cambridge, 1642 âŚ
My first snuff was Smithâs Garden Mint, I think. I usually go for plain or mentholated snuffs these days, but I still have a soft spot for anything minty.
Gletcherprise. Itâs a nice introduction but I have no interest in having any more of it. âWhen I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But, when I became a man, I put away the things of a child.â
Nowadays I prefer Gold Label, Amostrinha, or most anything from Rosinski.
Red Bull from Greens of Leeds, I think. âAre you 18?â, they asked, âYesâ I lied.
Lowenprise was the snuff that popped my nose cherry 3 months ago. First time is the special you know?
Back in '96 I have no idea what band it was some kid brought it to school. I remember it was non menthol and bone dry semi sweet. Never could find it anywhere for years until I looked online and found Mr Snuff. My first order was Janta Cafe, Jip, Redbull, SNUV Snow, Poschl Go with Original, and McChrystals OnG. Been full speed ahead ever since.
I was trying to quit cigarettes and read about snuff so I took some of my RYO American Spirit cigarette tobacco and pulverized it in a coffee grinder. After my first sniff I was a fan.
Never went to Greens but buy from Smoke-king and theyâre amazing.
I absolutely loved your story! So, what is your everyday snuff now?
Greens was so good. I used to look at the website then pop in with a handwritten list of 5 or 6 snuffs I wanted to try. Theyâd disappear somewhere round the back for a while whilst I waited, breathing in the wonderful smell and watching the old blokes buying pipe tobacco and young lads buying âyour cheapest cigarettesâ.
Once I decided to buy some twist tobacco to chew, complete unaware I needed to spit and proceeded to be quite unwell in an alley just off brigate.
Mine was McChrystalâs O&G, so good. I miss it, hard to get in my country
mine was 6photo kalish regular not super and my second was lowen prise got to say loved both just bought my pack of lowen and a full 28g of kalish for 1.78 for the kalish boyah
Kailash must rank among more unusual first snuff choices!
A fellow pipe smoker shared McCrystalâs Original and Genuine. I went out and bought that. I enjoy mentholated snuff.
My first snuff was a true curiosity that I bought in the famous Keflavik airport in Iceland. It was some 10 years ago. It was a 10g plastic tin which stated that the product was manufactured in Denmark (strange enough, since snuff is not used in Denmark as far as I know).
The stuff smelled like dung. It brought to me childhood memories of visiting stables. It made me think if it was⌠worth the effort. Of course I sneezed like it was real dung! But in the end I liked that smell.
At some point I wrongly thought that the snuff had gone stale and I threw it out. However, today I tried something that reminded me precisely of that legendary first snuff of mine:
Welcome back, dung-like smell. My nose salutes you.
