Hello Snuffhouse! Long-time lurker, first time poster… First a little back story… I was first exposed to “Snuff” last year when my brother brought some Poshl Schneeberg to an Oktoberfest we frequent. Then, a couple months ago I went to gasthof zur gemütlichkeit in Minneapolis and was treated to an after-dinner whiff of some Ozona/Poschl Raspberry. I liked the Raspberry so much that I purchased a tin to go. I really enjoyed it so I started looking for some snuff locally (before hearing about the wonderful FDA ban). I finally found some Gletscher Prise and I really enjoyed it! Especially when mixing the Gletscher with the Raspberry at a ratio of 2:3. Deciding that snuff was for me, I made my first purchase from the UK. Given that almost all of the snuff I had tried up to that point were all made by Poschl, I purchased mostly Poschl snuffs. The only other addition was some Rose sent snuff that I thought was similar to what they supplied the British Parliament. My order was as follows: 1- Red Bull 1- Lowenprise 1- President 1- Raspberry 1- Kendal English Rose 1- Packard’s Club I received them yesterday and set out to trying them. First thing I realized was that the Gletscher Prise I purchased locally must be pretty old as there isn’t a ton of Menthol flavor left in it. I say this because I have found ALL of the snuffs I received to be overpowering… In a very bad way. As the line in the title of this post suggests (I love Dr. Phillip Griffith’s page, by the way), all of these snuffs tasted like I was inhaling very bad perfume or cologne. Will they improve if I just let them air out? Or are their other snuffs (simple toasts or something) that aren’t so overpowering? Today at work I’ve been mixing the Lowenprise with the Gletscher at a rate of or 1:4 and it’s ok… I guess I can just get some natural snuff and dilute all of the flavors I received, but I’m not entirely sure that I’ll even like them diluted… Any recommendations for a guy with a highly flavor sensitive nose?
As far as natural snuffs go Wilson’s Natural, Toque Natural and Toque Quit. With Toast - Toque Natural Toast, Wilson’s 22, F & T High Dry Toast, Gawith Hoggarth Irish D, Samuel Gawith Irish D Light. For scented Toast - Toque Whiskey & Honey, Lime Toast, Almond Toast and Wilson’s #20 I do not like overly strong or extremely long lasting scents myself. I like all of the above (I have never had the Wilson’s Natural though but it has good reviews)
Fir some reason I had a hard time learning to take Toque Quit as a newb, but F&T High Dry Toast has been one of my favorites from the beginning. It’s really fine, but easy to take, the scent is wonderful but far from overpowering. If you can get your sands on some of it, it’s definitely worth a try.
I think I may have discovered part of the problem… I had been taking the snuff off of a hotel card and, prior to taking the snuff, I would chop it up to break up the clumps. I think this caused two problems: 1) it made the snuff finer, thus harder to take, and 2) it created more surface area which resulted in stronger flavors. I now use the boxcar method or, when the snuff is very fine, I pinch it between my thumb and pointer finger and use my pointer finger to wipe the snuff off into my nose. I also have learned to “sniff” properly rather than inhaling… I now can take all the above snuffs without feeling that death is imminent, and preferred… :0) Though, the Rose is still somewhat overpowering… Thank you both for your suggestions! I have some toasts on the way too cue, in large part, to your suggestions.
