@ddavelarson: be careful if you do try dipping–the first time I tried was with rooster and I swore I’d never do it again (so much for that). I made the mistake of trying to move it too much and got it all over the top of my tongue. Scotches are pretty bitter, so I try to avoid getting them on the top of the tongue. that said, the tongue is part of my process: I pour a heavy amount into the lid, pull my bottom lip out, pour in the snuff and let it sit for 20 seconds or so. then I move my tongue down from the top of the bottom lip towards the pile of snuff–it’s sort of like sweeping as I use little movements that gradually bring all the tobacco down to the main pile without letting the tobacco get on top of the tongue (you use the tongue more like a broom). spit once to get the bits off your tongue, and let the flavour and nicotine roll in. you develop a little pack of snuff that sits there nicely (try to keep excess saliva from getting in there too much). your saliva will wear away the pack over time and you can either add or rinse out once you’re tired of it. with some sweets I occasionally will move the pack to the top after licking a finger so it sticks less, and then I add another bottom pack so I have both going. moving the pack is very messy though and you will lose a lot of it.
Mike B, thanks for the lesson! That sounds great, one of the first things I’m going to do when my order arrives is give that a try. I wouldn’t have thought of it myself. The more time I spend here digging around, the more excited I get about the whole snuff experience. My problem is reining myself in and not trying to do everything at once. 
So my order from Mr Snuff came yesterday, right on time at one week. I’ve been trying them all today and think I have a favorite. Here’s what I got: Three Thistle Tops Railroad Mills Starr Navy Dental Sweet My fave so far is definitely Three Thistle, but we all know how that goes; taste changes over time. So we’ll see what it’s like next week. I think I still have a ‘sweet’ order in me too…
