What would it be? I have not been able to pick just one, Rooster has to be close, but it is a little much. Honest comes to mind, What are your top picks?
For me probably Railroad Mills Scotch followed by Square.
Three thistles for me but I really like them all!
Hard one But RRMills Maccoboy and Standard would be up top in my book.
Haven´t been through all of them in my collection, yet, but right now it would be a tough decision between Standard or Honest.
Honest is my current favorite snuff bar none. W.E. Garrett Sweet and Mild is my favorite American sweet. That said, if there’s a bad American snuff, I’ve yet to encounter it.
The only Americans I’ve tried so far are Rooster, Navy and Navy Sweet. If I had to choose one of them it would probably be the Navy Sweet, although I still find them quite similar.
Rooster, followed by Garrett’s Scotch. Not a fan of the Sweets. No matter what I do, they fly to the back of my throat.
Tough question, as I really like WE Garrett, Square, 3 Thistles, RR Mills, and Honest equally well and rotate amongst each regularly. It is so cheap to buy 1.15 oz of each that having to make a decision for just one is really not necessary. If you must narrow it down, I think Honest is the mildest, and RR Mills the most distinct/different flavor, of the group. 3 Thistles seems, to me to have the highest nicotine hit, followed by Square and WE Garrett both a close second. Again, all are great and this is just MY nose talking.
@kjoerup: You shouldn´t have mentioned it… seems like I´ve just encountered the first scotch I don´t care too much for: Navy Plain
Rooster all the way, baby!
Tuberose is my current favorite sweet. Nice in the lip too! There is some Dental Scotch in one of the snuffboxes I carry. Next time I’ll probably fill it with Square or Three Thistles.
RR Mills Plain- I don’t know why I haven’t tried it sooner.
I’d have to go with Three Thistles for a scotch, and Honeybee for a sweet.
BRUTON baby!
i actually prefer Square snuff scotch and Honey for sweet, as it’s actually sweet, and not just mild. then you have those two american oddities: maccaboy and checkerberry which have their place in my nose(and heart)
Rooster
Regular- RR mills Plain Sweet- Either Navy Sweet or Red Seal Strange- Checkerberry ( I actually love this stuff) Anyway, I’ve got around 25-30 american snuffs now, and I would really hate to narrow it down to just a few. Even though some of them are similar, they each have their own subtle nuances that I just love.
Mac. Oh, Boy! I have not yet had all the Scotches. Garrett, Stoker’s and Square seem to be my favorites right now. There are none I’m writing off yet, except some of the sweet ones.
@Red Star: I agree that Navy Plain is the most neutral American Scotch. I don’t dislike it, but it is kind of bland. I find it to be a good mixer, though. Spicing it up with a bit of brandy really brings the flavor out, too. I do, however, like Navy Sweet. It’s well-balanced; the sweetness is not at all overwhelming. A lot of the sweets made by Swisher tend to be a bit *too* sweet (Swisher Sweets?), overpowering the tobacco taste. Navy Sweet is an exception.
I’ve tried half a dozen American snuffs and found them all pretty vile. The sweet ones in particular have an awful taste. It’s like someone scraped the coating from cheap barbecue flavoured crisps and added a pile of artificial sweetener. I’m of the opinion that American tobacco makes the best cigarettes in the world but the worst snuff. I don’t like Wilsons Gold Label or the J&H Wilsons snuffs either (I’m sure the latter are made with Virginia tobacco too). Each to his own though
@ BradMajors: I doubt if the US snuffs are pure US grown tobaccos. We import a lot of tobacco from Brazil and the Caribbean. I think most tobacco products on the market are blends. Drop the sweet ones, get yourself one of the plain scotches. If you like toasts, there’s a strong similarity.
I hated all the sweet scotches when I first started. I found out that it was my technique that was bad, not the snuffs! I was getting way too much in my throat. Swisher wild cherry, honey bee and red seal are now all part of my rotation. I really couldn’t pick a favorite though, the’re all so different and it just depends on my mood.
@Xander: I’ve tried 3 plain scotches. The only similarity I find with English toasts - which I love - is the dry, fine grind. They all have that horrible smokiness I referred to.
There are a few that are not very smokey. Navy is one that springs to mind, but its a little boring to me. I hope you find one to your liking someday.
Well I’ve only had Rooster and a sample of Bruton when my nose was still quite young…So I’d have to say Rooster, as its the only one I’ve really appreciated! Some Rooster is going up my nose now.
