Recommend a Strong Nic US Snuff for Newbie?

That hard enough for ya? Snuff is not generally available locally so I’ll have to order internationally and probably from Mr Snuff since Dave gets all my business so far. Hard enough for you now? Seriously, despite the irony of buying US snuff internationally, I’d like to try all that I can. I’ve used Dean Swift Inchkenneth, which is good enough to keep on hand all the time. But I think I’d like a real nicotine boost. I’m a newbie and still get ‘surprised’ by very fine dry snuffs. But learning. Any ideas? Another order forming up now…

Nicotine Rush has the best selection of US for the best price (and they are based in the US). It is where I get my snuff. Bruton, Rooster, Three Thistles Strong are some of the ones I like for Nic.

If you study the charts you will find the highest in nicotine is Brutons, second is Red Seal which is a sweet and irritates my mucosa, tied for third are Railroad Mills Plain and Navy Plain. I would recommend the railroad mills as being the easiest to snuff of this lot. I snuff more Navy, but it is an acquired taste.

BRUTON!!!

I would recommend a Conwood variety like Dental Mild or W.E. Garrett. Rooster is good; it is my former #1 US snuff. I am not really fond of much from Swisher/Helme, generally. Also, you will find the main differences amongst US scotches is the three brands themselves; i.e. the Conwoods are similar, the USSTs are similar, and the Swishers are similar. There are a few notable exceptions though.

Starr is the one I always reccomend to the newbie. Its strong, but the least “scotchy” of all the scotches. Then graduate to plains like RR Mills and Navy, then to “Milds” which are pretty strong and very tasty like Tops and Dental, and eventually to strongs like Garrett, Superior, Square, Three Thistle, Standard, Rooster. Untimately is ridiculously strong like Bruton (Brutal), which to me compromises too much flavor for strength. Of course, some prefer its odd flavor. To me its like Rooster on steroids.

Thanks a million folks! This makes me think my next order might be all US snuffs – going to have to be sure to do it now too, so I don’t miss the sale. This is great, many thanks.

Dental Mild…it’s mild in taste but not nicotine wise.

Okay, well I pulled the plug. I appreciate everyone’s suggestions. Like a bonehead I didn’t print the order page before I submitted it, so I’m going to try to recreate my order from – ahem – memory… Conwood Dental Mild Swisher Railroad Mills Maccoboy Swisher Starr Dry Swisher Three Thistle Strong … Hm. There are two others but for the life of me I can’t nail them down. Well, that just means my package will be a pleasant surprise when it arrives. Rooster was out of stock and I didn’t quite have the huevos yet to go for Brutans but we’ll see about next time. There were several more I wanted to try but hit my limit with the recommendations here. But what do you folks think of these too? Swisher Honey Bee Scotch WE Garrett Peach

Honey Bee is quite popular, but it’s not a ‘scotch’, but a ‘sweet’. WE Garrett and ‘Peach’ , although made by the same company, (Conwood), are 2 different snuffs. Peach only comes as ‘Peach’, (sweet), whereas WE Garrett comes as a ‘scotch’ and a ‘sweet’ and are totally different from the peach.

Well, no one reccomended sweets to you since you asked for something strong. The sweets have a similar kick due to the fine grind, but its not half as intense as the strong and plain scotches. If you must try one next time around, Red Seal is probably the best of the bunch.

Yes, Red Seals in the sunset!!

@ bakdoor & Xander, so the sweets are less nic? That’s good to know, if so. I have wondered what “sweet” actually means when it comes to American snuffs. What’s the sweet component, typically? And are they normally a finer grind? Seems like I’m going to have to process a ‘sweet’ order one of these days too, just to see what it’s all about. So many fine snuffs, so little budget and time! Sounds like Red Seals will have to be part of it.

my impression is that sweets are tobacco mixed with very fine sugar and, in some, cocoa. there are other spices in some (Devoe, Society) that I can’t quite put my finger on. the fruit sweets have fruit flavours (e.g. wild cherry, peach), and people say that honeybee has a honey flavour though to me it’s pretty far from realy honey (though it’s a great snuff). they are all finely ground, though there are plenty of scotches that are also very finely ground.

W.E. Garrett is smoother than Red Seal and almost identical in strength

I just have to throw Rooster in there. I like the flavor and the nicotine!

I’m waiting for my chance at Rooster, it was sold out today or I’d have had it on my order. Too many people raving about it for me to let it get by me for long. It’s on my list, believe me. @Mike B., thanks for the great explanation. I think I’m going to make a ‘sweets’ order one of these days before too long. They all sound good to me. So many different snuffs, I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to try them all. I guess there’s time, but I’m not feeling particularly patient! Want them all now… That’s probably the same old story, huh?

The only scotches I can get locally are the we garretts… I wish I could get tube rose (got it in a sampler someone sent) awesome stuff!! I love the Garrett but I still prefer English snuffs… F&T HDT is lightyears beyond Garret… IMO

@ddavelarsen: They are sweetened with added sweeteners (traditionally molasses, sometimes honey or fruit juice but who knows what they use nowadays) to make them more palatable for oral use. Personally, I find almost all of them too sickly sweet and cloying for any sort of regular nasal use. Used orally, they range from tolerable to good. They work prettty well as mixers if you want to sweeten up a recipe. A few are extremely sweet and I’ll not get them again, but a few are more gentle and less one-dimensional. Of those I’d get again Three Thistle Sweet, Red Seal, and Tube Rose. Still, you will want to try for yourself. Depending on what part of the US you are in, you might be able to find some locally if you look hard enough.

Thanks gents. @Xander, I appreciate the great description. I’m going to check with the local cigarette store to see whether they carry any snuffs; I’ve tried all the cigar stores and found a very poor selection and no US snuffs! Go figure. I will try the cigarette outlet though, who knows how lucky I might get. When I was a kid, I remember many of these for sale in 7-11 and the dimestores/drugstores. Looking everywhere is probably a good idea, I’ve let my imagination limit me in that regard. Since you mention it, I do remember reading that snuff use in the US is kind of focused on women in the Southeast, who take it orally. Don’t recall where I read that though. I bet these are some of what they’re taking. Very interesting. Thanks for the recommendations, they’re going on my growing wishlist as we speak. Thinking about this though, it seems to me that the grind on these must be awful fine for oral use. I guess that’s just a preconception that I have. I might give oral use a try some day and see what that’s like. Hm.
