Hi I’ve just finished a tub of Bruton - a snuff which is pretty damn perfect imo. Very strong and my nose loves the tobacco. No clogging or drip, perfect tobacco, I adore it. Having less Bruton in my stock I thought I’d switch to using Rooster for a bit and wow, I’d forgotten what a heavy hitter it is. Reading snuffreviews, you’d get the impression Bruton reigns supreme as King Scotch, having the nickname Brutal - yet I can shovel heaps of Bruton up my schnozz all day long quite happily. Rooster feels stronger to me. Room spinning stuff. Which do you feel is stronger and which do you prefer? I love them both, but Rooster feels stronger and much more aggressive in the nose. Bruton still stands as my desert island snuff, I must buy more.
I have seen the tables on nicotine content and available nicotine in American Scotches. Bruton is #1, #2 is Red Seal, tied at #3 are RR mills plain and Navy Plain. I think Rooster is eighth or ninth.
I think Bruton sacrifices too much flavor for strength. Rooster has a much better flavor. Sadly Bruton is available locally, but Rooster is not. Here are the top 10 US snuffs in unprotonated nicotine that @Nachman is talkng about: Bruton (3.12) Starr (3.08) Red Seal (2.51) DeVoe Sweet (1.74) Carhart’s Choice (1.74) Railroad Mills Checkerberry (1.33) Railroad Mills Plain (0.97) Navy Plain (0.97) Rooster (0.74) Railroad Mills Maccoboy (0.59) But remember that unprotonated is a measure of how fast the nitotine is released, not a measure of the overall nicotine in the snuff. The top ten in total nicotine content are (in mg/g): Railroad Mills Plain 24.84 Navy Plain 24.84 Wild Cherry 23.38 Superior 23.17 Three Thistle Strong 21.42 Square 21.42 Ralph’s 21.33 W.E. Garrett Scotch Snuff 18.27 Honest Scotch Snuff 17.53 Dental Mild Scotch Snuff 17.12 Bruton was further down the list at 11.14. However if you take the stats of both categories and multiply them, you can come up with something I call the “power factor” by this measure Bruton does return to the top of the list.
Amazing info. I wonder why rooster feels so strong to me then. I’ve got all the scotches and the only two I couldn’t live without are Bruton and Rooster.Rooster is the only Scotch which brings tears to my eyes. Bruton doesn’t do that. Very grateful of the above info, fascinating indeed.
Oh, Rooster’s overall nicotine was 12.51 mg/g so it has more to give, just doesn’t give as fast as Bruton. It scored 10th place in my power factor rating measure.
@xander … do you have a list like that for english snuffs that would be interesting
@jpsks No, that was some info culled from a medical report published in the 1980s. The full report is linked to someplace on the site, but it didn’t contain any information on English snuffs. In fact I’ve never seen any that do.
