wow, lots of great suggestions on this thread! I, too, am starting to crave snuffs that do not exist yet! A few to good suggestions to reiterate/some of my own suggestions: -Apple Pie/Cinnamon-Apple -Caramel Apple -BEER? lol -Sweet Baby Back Ribs -Root Beer/Dr. Pepper -Mocha -Thin Mint (Peppermint-Chocolate) I’ve made a few toque combos that I enjoy from time to time: Cherry-Coke, Apricot-Champagne, Raspberry-Lime Toast(toque raspberry mixes well with ANYTHING), Pomegranate-Grapefruit. If you set up an open taste-testing panel, let us know!
@slybootz: Some of those snuffs do exist. Dolakia makes an apple pie, I think under the WOW label. Molens makes a chocolate peppermint snuff, and there is one people say smells like sarsaparilla (root beer), but I can’t remember which one. Mocha is easy to make with a mixture of a chocolate and a coffee snuff. There are some hops snuffs, but I have never used them so I don’t know how much it tastes like beer.
@ Carol I hear you on the Sparrow Cool tasting like a Newport. It’s the only snuff that duplicates the sensation of smoking a good menthol cigarette (and F you to anybody who doesn’t think a Newport is a good menthol cigarette). Seriously, I wish Toque would get away a little from the food based snuff, and do some more interesting things with natural tobaccos and medicated snuffs. For example, a camphor based snuff would only face two competitors at worst. You can’t buy a good Kendal Brown in bulk. Please, if you’re going to have a snuff interpretation of every food product known to man, at least give us tobacco fans some Toque interpretations of old-style natural tobacco based snuffs as well.
I maybe wrong. I think it takes more work to get the old-style right. More research has to go into it.
www.snuff.me.uk/Samuel-Gawith 250g drums of Kb Special and KB Original. Are those good enough? Probaby have the KB plain if you ask.
@Nachman I’ll have to try the WOW apple pie, but I’m hoping for a Toque version, as I like toque’s tobacco flavor much more! Same thing with the Molens chocomint, which I enjoy, but I like the toque peppermint better than the molen’s latakia chocomint and pepermunt. I’ve made a few homebrew mixes of mocha snuffs, too. I’ll have to look into that sasparilla snuff, and the hops snuffs!
In regards to the WOW! Apple Pie, it tastes/smells nothing like any apple pie I’ve ever had. My girlfriend says it smells like musty pickles(whatever musty pickles smell like lol), even when I let my mom smell it, she said it smelled of pickles. I smell a definite clove influence, but no apple whatsoever, it is slightly sweet though. It is an enjoyable snuff, just not apple pie.
@ xander Thanks for the invaluable tip. Two of my favorite snuffs are SG Irish D (which I now think is the best Toast out there) and Kendal Brown Original, but I would vastly prefer them in bulk to the bunch of 10g dispensers I have lying around. Suprisingly it seems they ship to the U.S. Has anyone had satisfactory service from snuff.me.uk to the U.S.?
Yeah, a few of the guys around here have, and they’ve traded to me some of their bulk. So its definatley come into the States. Watch out for tarriffs! They have almost all the SG blends at that shop, even some odd ones like Apple & White Label. I’ve never shopped there personally though. I might have to get Princes Gold in bulk, but so many good ones…
A Carnation snuff would be awesome. I dropped a tin of carnation into a tin of JH’s Sp, it really rounded out that dirty snuff quite nicely.=) I think carnation with a touch of “sweet clove” could be a winner. As carnations are somewhat spicey, rather than flowery. Or hey how about a sweet clove recipe. Cinnamon Honey Clove. Tequila for energy. Toasted Coconut mild curry snuff. lol. Hey it does smell good right!?
@ LHB: just read on snuff reviews that WoS Jockey Club includes Mimosa, at least according to an old story cited there.
I’d like snuff Toque Print Series: Old Book, Old Broadsheet for traditonalists and Offset Tabloid for modernists. I really miss the smell of old newspapers and comic books, used to get black nose sniffing them when I was a lad.
Having just had reason to open it since getting it in August 2009, I was just lastnight/today treated to the smell of “fresh phonebook opened for the first time” I also still do hope Roderick will seriously buy himself a bottle of “Johnson Creek Original Smokey Juice” and see if he can make a snuff with this smell – if he did, that would be the ultimate smoker’s snuff. Has anybody suggested avocado/guacamole ? How about Kiwi?
@ Xander Thanks for the tip. I’ll definitely be ordering a tin of WoS Jockey Club this evening. I’m not very good at untangling the various aromatic strands that make up a snuff, but if JC has mimosa in it, I’ll know it. That would be incredible. As far as reiterating my main point, I wish Toque would come out with one natural, tobacco based snuff for every food snuff they come out with.
@AllanH & whistlrr, awesome! My wife won’t come near snuff but if I get a new book she immediately has to dive into it nosefirst…maybe I could get her started with Toque New Book…
i’m pretty new so my terminology will probably be confusing/infuriating/just plain wrong and some of these snuffs may already exist, but here are some flavors i wish existed or that i could find. a lighter jasmine than the G&H one, if it was using the fribourg and treyer HDT as a base i think i might like it more. bergamot orange (in a dark wet coarse base with that weird hint of leather) orange and clove (medium grind and moisture) lemon and tarragon (medium grind and moisture) hopps (nice because its also a preservative and anti-bacterial, i think a coarse wet would work best) tawny port (in a very light toast) allspice (medium grind and moisture) lap sang soo chong tea with honey (coarse wet, taste a bit like latakia but i think in a kendal tobacco it would go very well) lemonbalm (medium grind and moisture, bright VA tobacco whatever that comes into snuff terms as) i dont think any of these would be good mentholated. like i said, new, so probably not great suggestions.
Not exactly a flavor idea but… Maybe Toque might make its contribution a la NTSU and Taxi… I have some Taxi on its way as part of a huge order (after watching it frequently being Out/On Order at both the main two sites I go to) and NTSU seems to regularly be out (I’ve also got some babaton on order to test for the first time)… in leu of very much real taxi or NTSU I’m trying to make some home made ‘snuff-alikes’ using the Swedish Match loose snusses (that I purchased and have come to realize I’ll nver use as intended)… Grov snus, Ettan and General loose are my targets… so far the Grov (the smaller amount I have had to work with so its coming along faster at drying out and letting me modify its grind etc) is looking especially promising Since these types seem to be notoriously more in demand than what’s available (and I’m even trying to make something on my own along those lines) Maybe Roderick should consider getting into this market with maybe one (NTSU, Taxi Red, babaton, ground snus) similarly insanely strong course and moist (preferably to me just a plain strong because I’m personally a fan of plain and strong and not a fan of menthol, fruity or floral)
i definately think something fruity, maybe based on a herbal tea. perhaps orange and cranberry? or maybe earl grey could be good
I think SP is based on Earl Grey, or is that the other way around. Probably the latter.
What exactly is the point of asking Roderick to make knock offs of perfectly fine snuffs that already exist? Since no one seconded my retsina suggestion, then I will. Can you please make a retsina snuff? Thank you.
