I’m putting together a Toque order trying to get around to some of the blends I haven’t tried before. One of everything would be a larger order than I’m willing to make at the moment.
What flavors should I absolutely not pass up?
I’m still working through bulk bags of Whiskey and Honey and Rustica (the latter mostly for blending/fermenting/scenting experimentation). I’ve also had:
Spanish Gem, Original, Ambrosia (feels like I’m forgetting a couple)
I’m set on trying: Almond Toast,
Absinthe, SP Wintergreen, Cheese and Bacon (Love it or hate it? Guess I’ll find out. I do love Marmite, though), USA Lime
I haven’t tried any of the Otto or Artisan either, so suggestions there are also welcome.
I love nicotine, nose burn, and natural tobacco, so I’ve been dwelling on the Indian whites, toasts, with some stuff like Taxi and Viking at hand in my collection. I’d like to branch out into some sweeter or more fragrant offerings, but not sure where to start. Years ago in the Black Forest my first introduction to snuff was Pöschl and Schmalzlers. I liked Gawith original, Bayernprise and seems like there were some likör flavors I enjoyed. Seems like over the years with my love of cigars and non-aromatic pipe tobaccos, I’ve focused on strong tobacco and neglected a large range of the spectrum.
Thanks in advance.
It clicked, when I eventually realized that each manufacturer has just a few different plain snuff bases which they add various flavours to. I lost the interest in flavoured snuff altogether. Even worse - some of the producers just use one or two bases for their entire range of snuffs (like McChrystal’s). I’m only interested in unique plain snuffs - thankfully, there are not too many of them on the market today.
Thumbs up for being fond of plain tobaccos, matey, and sorry for being of no help in this particular matter. My advice - keep exploring the plain ones and… start making your own!
The feedback is still appreciated. I do appreciate the natural flavor and experience of tobacco in all of its various methods of curing, preparation, and consumption. I’ve tried a similar sort of exploration once or twice in the past with aromatic pipe tobaccos. I’d order some things online and ended up finding them weak or too artificial tasting or even if the toppings were good, there would be a cheap, drug-store-pouch-blend kind of taste undermining the tobacco. I still feel like there has to an aromatic out there that I would love and just haven’t tried, because I got frustrated with the early disappointments.
That’s why I’m here appealing to the experience of this community. Maybe it can point me in a good direction.
Writing about pipe tobacco reminds me I have a tin of SWS St. James Parish I haven’t touched in a long while. Perique is a magical herb preparation in my book. I’m going for it now.
Natural toast and Silver Dollar Scotch are both great snuffs. I would also throw in a fruit snuff, blueberry, raspberry, or grapefruit are my favorites. If you like florals, violet, lavender, and rose are all great imo. I like them because they are not a fake one note scent.
You might like Toque Berwick Brown.
I bought a 10g tin and initially hated it. After letting it sit for about 3 weeks after opening it I came back to it and now it is really good. I will be ordering more. It needs to air out though.
@SnuffMonkey Much appreciated. I was curious about the blueberry. I’ll try that one. I’m glad you mentioned that the florals don’t seem fake. That makes a huge difference. I’ve not been impressed by rose scented snuffs in the past. I enjoy the smell of certain flowers but not the so called floral scent of household cleaning products, which is how some florals can come across. Incidentally I’ve got some tube rose essential oil that my wife bought without a specific use for it, and I really find it very agreeable. I’ve considered trying to top a plain tobacco flour with it to see how it turns out (and no, I’ve never had a chance to try the tube rose scotch).
@FLA Thanks for the recommendation. I had to search through the forums to see what Berwick Brown is all about. It seems folks are drastically divided on it. I saw someone compare it to Lakeland essence in pipe tobaccos. Lakeland blends are definitely a point of contention among pipe smokers. Some love it. Some hate it so much they have to get rid of their pipes, because they can’t get rid of the ghost (lingering flavor even when smoking a different blend). The haters say it tastes like soap. I seem to be one of those that enjoys it. So now I’m curious enough I have to try it.
@cigargod I am still not sure what flavors to expect from OFS. It seems like the Toque product descriptions are unnecessarily succinct.
Also Artisan rappees - check. I am curious how that juniper scent works with the rich tobacco.
