Only one snuff ...

wow, did the same again but this time im not so tired- wow! apparently being tired raises tolerance a bit.

It makes a massive difference with me, sometimes it’s not worth trying to get the levels up at all. If your body/mind needs sleep, sometimes this can be interpreted as needing nicotine - so no matter how much nic you get, you’re still needing sleep so your still feeling the need for more :frowning: I’ve also found this happens if my fluid levels are low. Back to topic briefly  I’m not overly convinced with JHW Top Mill. Still running with it at the mo, but repeated apple pip sized pinches are key. Anything more clogs and falls out of my nose (even though it’s fine) or it doesn’t clog and hits my throat. Apple pip sized pinches are a lot better behaved, though three or four a side are needed to feel like you’re had a proper pinch. It’s a nice snuff, but not one I can scoff readily as with Berwick Brown (current favourite), and I have to take my time with it. It also feels a little cementitious in the nose as if I’m trying to take a cast of my nostril. /:slight_smile: I’ll stick with it though …

Well, the Top Mill No 1 failed me as a sole snuff. It’s lovely, but just too finicky to be used all day on it’s own. Enjoying some GH Cherry right now

what do you think to the cherry? ill take a pinch now!

I think it would be a little overpowering for all day use, but it’s a lovely snuff for using as part of a daily array. I find the Sea Breezes to be the same too - very nice, but not for prolonged use. I find I much prefer plain or SP for extended usage

leave 5g in a wilsons style tin (ie. not particularly airtight) and see how it develops. my first snuff was cherry in a tapbox, and i found i could take it for weeks, wonder if being a little drier made a difference.

No No No! I love it the way it is … just not for every pinch throughout the day

alright then  enjoy! its definitely a favourite of mine.

I find the snuff level of nicotine such a delicate thing to ruin ones satisfaction level for. I’m not sure that sentence makes sense. I’ll elaborate. After years (since I was 15) of hard Snus usage it is taking a long time to gauge my cravings for nicotine levels down to a level where snuff satisfies a lot on its own. I’m starting to get there. It’s been about 3 weeks now? I’ll feel a background craving for snus coming and going in waves which fades more and more. Snuff doesn’t cure it through these waves, it just renders it bearable. It’s like it satisfies on a completely different level and feels like two completely different “drugs”… but I know, intellectually, that I am getting the same drug my body is craving and that things would be worse without snuff. However, I bear with it and ride the cravings out like a captain with firm trust in his vessel against stormy seas. It works. And I think it’s worth it. How wondrous wouldn’t it be to get your sole satisfaction from snuff alone and not even think about any other method of nicotine intake? All it takes is a firm goal about it. I like the idea of just keeping it to one thing… and in my opinion you would be messing with your need for nicotine with e-cigarettes, easily. Far too easily. I wouldn’t even chance it. The only way to do it would be to stick to snuff alone and completely ride it out. That’s my recommendation though… to each their own as they say. With continued use of something as strong as dip and/or chew you are never going to really be satisfied from any pinch of Snuff according to my estimates. Snus is easily dozens stronger. I worry slightly in a cringe when I read about people doing a whole array of nicotine types. What a mess. That’s just me though… and all this brings me closer to the point of why I like this thread so much. I really do. I’m really into keeping things simple and refined and your own style defined. Culturally, where I live, the pack of Snus you stick to kind of says something about your personality, identity… it’s like a statement, fashion, mental… take your pick. But you mainly stick to one kind, maybe you alternate in periods, but you experiment… you dont go around with 3-4 packs in your pockets; as what seems to be the norm with snuff. Classic, liberal, conservative, flavored, juicy, dry, long cut, modern, hip, metrosexual, rugged… snus use here in Scandinavia embraces all of that… where as in the US it seems to be more about parading through all of them like a buffet. Though I dont think it should be the norm. I think one should have fun experimenting, probably keep an array at home, but basically walk around with that one snuff that you love and identify with. Keep it simple. Rockin that one pack in your pocket. Simple and cool like that. Instead of fumbling around with a bunch of packs… what is that about? : P Using that one snuff (at a time at least) seems to me like a refined approach. In my mind. Admirable. Honorable. I love this thread and am very interested to see how you go about finding what works for you and which snuffs in general work as staple snuffs - because evidently, a lot of them simply dont! And arent supposed to! Xmas Pudding sure as heck doesnt, in my experience, its amazing as a treat, but not as a staple. Things like that are completely new to me. But I myself am slowly venturing through a new landscape of flavors and styles and finding new snuffs I like to take out with me… but I must say: at home, I really am loving having an array to sample from for different moods and settings; even though having an assortment of as many as 50+ would be too bewildering for me to really enjoy and focus my enjoyment on. But finding that staple, and not messing about with a million kinds of different types of nicotine intake, thats key… for me at least. Sorry, carry on, as you were…

Here’s what I don’t like … having several snuffs open, or several snuff boxes on the go, and the snuff going stale/dry before I’m halfway through. If I only have pocket space for one snuffbox, I know I could take Berwick Brown and it’s get used before it spoils, but I’d like to have a choice of at least 4 or 5 I could do that with. Snuffs that I could take several pinches of a day - good accompanying snuffs when there’s room for 3 or 4 snuff boxes, are things like GH Cherry, GH Sea Breezes, Grand Cairo, F&T Princes Special, Field of Junipers & SG Celtic Talisman. Many of the “fun flavoured” Toques fall into this category too, and I keep a few in my desk drawer at work for this reason, and a few more on my desk at home - punctuation snuffs! I know I can put a small amount in a box, and it’ll be used in 3 or 4 days tops if I get the right assortment - nothing too similar carried together. I wouldn’t be able to use them exclusively though Some snuffs are only worth a very occasional pinch, and I probably wouldn’t want more than one pinch a day - Royal George, Bordeau, medium mentholated snuffs, (strong menthols I avoid), also Creme de Figue and Mull of Oa (lovely snuffs but the drip is NASTY!! ). These are a waste if I put any in a snuffbox, and will either get traded or mixed into something I can take more regularly. I don’t mind having one or two occasional snuffs, but it’s pointless having half a drawer full I’m a simple creature really, and I just want to sort my snuff into “primary” that can be carried alone, “complimentary” for when there’s more pocket space, and a limited number of “occasional” snuffs such as a toast or two, a floral of two, and a menthol or two. Right now I seem to have a lot of snuffs open, only one primary, a few good complimentary, but a shed load of occasional … if ever! :-S

That sounds like a nice system. I’m curious about what primaries you find. During my routine I wake up with menthol (kick-start), but then when my coffee is brewed I accompany the coffee with Dholakia Swiss Chocolate… and it occurs to me that this snuff has a lot of potential as a primary snuff. Just thought I’d throw that in there.

Snuff box loaded up with Toque’s SP Extra now …

Emptied the snuffbox of SP Extra this afternoon. While it was OK for a larger part of the day, it was much better when carried and used alongside GH Kendal Brown. I tried carrying them both independantly too, and Kendal Brown would be my preference of the two for sole carry … though carrying both was better still. They work very well together as a double act. The SP box has now been loaded up with JH Wilson SP No 1, and we’ll see if this is any different to the Top Mill No 1 (above) which failed as a standalone snuff. I have also taken advantage of WoS’s Christmas discount code and have placed an order which includes Brunswick, Burgundy & F&T Old Paris (and more besides). Based on the reviews I’ve read, these might be subtle enough for all day use on their own. I still have a load of others to try out too. I’m very tempted to have a run with SG’s 2013 Christmas Special. Considering us snuffers are in the minority, the range of snuffs available to us is simply incredible. It’s like there’s always something new to try.

It seems like 6 Photo Kailash is very popular. Maybe I should order a tin of that with my next online order.

I find it very messy, but it is a nice snuff. I’d say Kailash is one of the “must try” snuffs like Kendal Brown, Hedges L260, F&T HDT, Tom Buck, and a number of other classics

I really recommend 6P Kailash, it’s my all day snuff. Yes it can be messy, but you get used to it and adjust your technique to compensate. Using a the back of a fingernail as a shovel works well for some.

I found I get bored even with the best snuffs early on in my snuff use history. This is the reasoning behind small air tight glass storage jars. I can put them away to be savored later. I been carrying just two [St.Casura and Sparrow cool] the last couple weeks at work, but when I get home the variety gets into play. I always keep 6P special close for a decongestant. I have tried this experiment and will return to my old ways and carry a larger variety with me at all times. I have concluded I am not a one snuff type of connoisseur.

If I thought I’d ever just have one snuff to choose from, or one beer, or one whisky, that would be a sad day. I have no intention of putting myself through that long term. However, if I can find out which snuffs I could go all day or even all week on, I know which snuffs to keep with me at all times, because no matter what mood or weather, or what problems my nose might be up to this time, I’ll have an old snuff friend I can count on. I want to find my snuffs I can use alone, so that I don’t have to. So that I can diversify and know there’s a snuff that’ll back me up if others don’t work for me if my nose gets tempremental, or for whatever other reason an accompanying snuff might not work for me. Only then will I feel fully confident to walk away from the cigarettes, confident that I have the right snuffs with me to stop me going to the shop and buying another weeks tobacco. This is the nearest I’ve ever been to quitting smoking, and I want to get it right

… and SG’s 2013 Christmas Special could easily be an all day solo snuff. Really glad I got 3 x 25g tins of this. Fruity and spicy but easy to take and not overwhelming on flavour. Well done on this one Mr Gregory! Shame this isn’t available in bulk

I never use just one snuff. I start the day with something coarse and heavy, usually a Gawith, or NTSU, then mid morning, break into Himtaj or another Indian snuff, like Dholakia Manjul or Kamal, then Toque toasts after lunch. If I leave home for any reason, I grab a variety, stuff them into my pockets, put them on the seat of my old car, and go from there. Sometimes I chew nicotine gum for an extra kick, but I prefer snuff by itself most of the time. Recently, I have been mixing Toque rustica with SP Extra, finding the combination really unique. There must be another set of alkaloids in the rustica because I get a very alert feeling afterwards. At any rate, I used to use one type of snuff daily, but quickly tired of the sameness, no matter what brand. I guess I’m kind of a junky for it, but thats how I do it.

Here’s where I’m at so far. I have tried a few other snuffs, but need to spend more time with them. I’m sure some on the list will move places in time too as my nose changes, and so do the snuffs (with time and batch variations)
