Only one snuff …

5

I’ve tried many snuffs in my first year of snuffing, some I’ve liked and some I haven’t. Many of them are OK for “punctuation”, but I wouldn’t use them for more than two or three snuffs a day, maximum. Some I can keep dipping into throughout the day, so long as I’ve something else to refresh the nose occasionally, but I think there’s possibly only two snuffs that I’ve tried so far which have jumped out at me as being a snuff I could probably carry on it’s own and use exclusively each and every day. These are JH Wilson SP No1 and Toque Berwick Brown. I have bought a few snuffs in bulk recently, but I want to ensure my bulk is snuffs that I can use continuously and exclusively, and still enjoy every single pinch. I recently got an assortment of 10 snuffs from Toque, and the majority of those are great for punctuation and breaking up the day - and being in the 10g Toque tins, they’ll keep perfectly well in the pocket for occasional use, so … I’m considering loading up a snuffbox with one snuff and using it and it alone for a period of time. A few 10g Toques will be carried, but as back up. If I have to break out one of the other snuffs due to clogging, irritation, boredom or any other issue, that snuff will not be selected for any new bulk. This is not intended as a crazy feat of endurance just an attempt to find which snuffs are truly worthy of being kept in bulk. Let’s face it, right now snuff is available fairly readily, and the only reason for keeping bulk is in case something goes wrong personally, financially or legislatively, and should that happen I don’t want to have snuff I get bored of after a couple of days. Nic content will not be a factor in this, and neither will using snuff at the expense of other pleasures. I will still be carrying an e-cig and/or rolling baccy. The weekend sounds like a good time to start this little experiment

5

Another point: Most of the time I’m using a snuff, there’s a carry over from the previous snuff earlier that day, or even the day before. This will give me the opportunity to try each snuff without having the ghost of the snuff before affecting my judgement. EDIT: This will also be interesting for me to gauge how much snuff I’m actually using. When you spend each and every day dipping in and out of several pots, it’s hard to get a perspective - and to be perfectly honest, right now I don’t have a clue! Does that matter? Well, it does put the bulk purchases in perspective of timescales “I have a month’s worth of Tom Buck, and three months’ worth of London Brown” etc etc

B

Good luck with that. I certainly couldn’t just carry one, I need variety (

5

Yeah, me too normally If it all goes wrong, I’ll put it down as being educational I’m probably going to start this off with Berwick Brown, as this has been a “staple food” for me for a while. If I can’t do it with that, the chances are I’m taking out of the wrong orifice and need to give it up as a bad job :-"

F

i currently get by with firedrac and GH Cherry only, since i havent found one snuff to cover all bases (except for ultra fresh GH cherry with a little firedrac mixed in perhaps).

5

Well, after four (or was it five) consecutive loads of SG Firedance, I can tell you that won’t be subject to the trials. Very nice, but definitely one for occasional use. It’ll be mainly plain and SP snuffs for prolongued usage here I reckon, though there are a couple of other more subtle snuffs I want to try too

W

Viking Dark Toque quit Almond toast Abraxas premium batch fin As of now, I could use these exclusively, and be happy doing it.

Viking Dark and Toque Quit are two that I have and plan to try as standalones :-bd Not tried the others yet

F

viking dark may get a bit much, i tried. though summer may have affected that.

5

I think my nose will be able to handle it, it’s the throat drip I’m more concerned about on the darker snuffs. It doesn’t give me a problem on infrequent use, but cumulative effect might be different

K

I usually only use one snuff, 6 Photo Kailash. I will have a pinch of something else maybe once a week or so.

5

Ooooh … Kailash … haven’t tried that for ages :-?

T

Bare in mind @50ft_trad if you use a wooden snuff box you will have 2 issues which may affect your judgement. 1) The wooden box will to some degree draw moisture from your snuff, affecting how it feels in your nose and to some degree how much scent is left in it. Over the course of a few days a moist snuff will become dry and brittle and will loose some of it’s delicate scent. This happened to my Viking Dark. I like it better from the orginal tin. I suppose a good plastic or glass snuff box/bottle would treat it right though. 2) If using a wooden snuff box, you can air out the previous snuff scent by leaving it completely open for 1-2 weeks. The oxygen in the air will eventually corrode almost all of the scent molecules left behind in the wood. Give it a test of course before you repack it and if it still has a lingering scent leave it longer. For me I can use Viking Dark all day for days on end, I really like it.

5

@thorgrimnr No problem there mate, I’ll be using a plastic snuffbox I do have some wooden boxes, one which I have been using very recently as I just started dabbling with toasts (my nose has started accepting them recently), and one that sits on my desk with my “Granny’s Stew” in. I’ll not be using them for this though. I have three of the Mr Snuff plastic boxes, and three of the Snuffhouse ones, and I use different colours for different snuff types so I don’t get too confused. One of them tends to have Berwick Brown in it most of the time anyway, so I’ll be using that one to start with. Another tends to be used for darker snuffs, so that’ll be what I carry the Viking Dark in

X

Go with something plainer. I keep 4 different SPs in bulk and one plain toast. I can use any one of them as all-dayers but I succumb to variety whenever I sit at my desk. About half the time I carry a stoneware bottle of schmalzler as well, usually a plainer one.

5

Berwick Brown - Day 1 I started loading up my yellow Mr Snuff box with Berwick Brown this morning, then realised I hadn’t measured the weight of it empty. #-o Never mind, I carried on using it anyway. 10 mins ago I decided to weigh my empty blue box - 28g, against my loaded yellow box - 35g. So as of 4pm on Saturday evening, I have around 7g of BB. I have been dipping into it a bit today and haven’t been tempted for another flavour. I have been using e-cig and roll ups though. So far the flavour hasn’t gotten boring or cloggy or sickly, so we’re off to a good start

5

@Xander With you on the plainer ones! Off the top there’s Viking Dark, Toque Quit, M&W Jocks Choice, F&T Santa Domingo, GH Sea Breezes, & GH Kendal Brown that I already have in. Might not run the test with the Jocks Choice or Santa Domingo though, as AFAIK these aren’t available in bulk. I’ll not be trying Tom Buck, SG London Brown, GH KB Plain ot Toque’s Plain Coarse either as I already have these in bulk I really do want to get some more JH Wilson SP1 in though. That was the first snuff I tried in the little plastic 5g tub, and haven’t had any since. I want to see how I get on with it now that my nose is a little more experienced in other snuffs. I need more Viking Blonde and Viking Brown too

H

For me it’s White Elephant simply because anything else will make my nose really stuffy if I use it all day.

S

whiskey and honey … satisfies my toast and flavor preferences.

5

Berwick Brown - Day 2 Spent another day merrily chugging away on this, plus cigs and the e-cig, and the snuff box is now about half full. There have been times when I’ve reached for the roll ups and/or the vape, but I still haven’t been yearning for a different snuff. At this rate the snuffbox will last me till Tuesday night, or maybe even into Wednesday. If I still feel this way at that point, I’ll happily accept this as one to stand alone and be ordered in bulk. However, I have noticed that it can interfere with other stuff. I had a couple of mixed fruit ciders last night, and the flavours were clashing. That’s not a failing of Berwick Brown, as no snuff is going to be universally complimentary of all food and drink. Just something for me to be aware of and consider

H

I’m pretty much a one-snuff guy. For the longest time it was Ozona President… Then I discovered 6 Photo Kailash! (I can also spend weeks with nothing but 6 Photo Special.)

5

Hmmm. Indian snuffs seem rather popular with the one snuff guys …

V

I used to snuff almost nothing but Gawith Apricot for 2 years. It was about three 10g tins per week.

B

St. Casura this snuff can be consumed in massive quantity all day with no consequences

@basement_shaman That does sound like a good one for all day use from what I’ve read, but I’ve not had the pleasure of trying it yet It’s the start of Day 3 with the same snuffbox here, and looking at what’s inside I’ll still have some left when the day is over. It’s probably putting me at using about 2g a day (roughly) which is helpful to know, and I can safely say that I could take Berwick Brown for extended periods and be very happy indeed. In fact the last couple of days I haven’t even carried an alternate snuff for “in case”. I notice some folks in this thread feel the same way with Indian and menthol snuffs, but they’re occasional usage ones for me. The Indian ones also benefit from spoon use, whereas the pinch is my preferred method of getting it in my face. It’s good to hear what folks like for all day usage though. Bouncing between different snuffs had seemed to be the trend here, although that might be just that those who are swapping and changing have more to write about :-? My post count certainly dropped after I started trying a one snuff loadout The only challenge now, is deciding what to go for next Maybe either Viking Dark or GH Sea Breezes …

5

#-o I can’t count! It’s the start of the 4th day with Berwick Brown … :-" That puts my usage lower than I thought, although I have still been using the roll ups and vaping stick

F

ive been using my dregs mix for about 3 days now exclusively. not sure on usage quantity, ill judge that at some other point. the only thing this snuff lacks is nicotine, but i made up for that with a little snus, though im running out.

5

Sounds like it could use a bit of Toques Rustica in there mate. Won’t take much to turn the nic volume up without altering the scent too much

F

yeah, i need to get some, amping up the nic in various snuffs is the main reason i want it. i just have 1.75 in the bank and 1.50 in my pocket right now till i get paid haha. and that wont be much.

5

… and the uninterrupted run of Berwick Brown over! SWS Field of Junipers in the nose right now Did I use up all the Berwick Brown? Nope Did I get bored of it? Nope Did it start causing problems? Nope I forgot to pick it up when I left the house this morning … #-o

5

Trying something with a stronger scent today in the form of Grand Cairo. I have a feeling this could be too overwhelming as an all day snuff.

F

today it will be GH cherry and some chew. not sure how ill get away with the spitting aspect, its the only bit that puts me off, but i managed to only spit every 10/20 mins last night so might get away with nipping to the loo.

5

I must admit I had considered looking at twist/bits as a chewing option too (never tried it), but spitting wouldn’t be an option for me. If spit/juice can’t be swallowed I’ll have to give it a miss. GH Cherry is still on my wanted list for my next order. EDIT: GH Cherry now ordered >:)

5

Well, I’ve spent a morning on Grand Cairo, and that’s enough continuous use for me My nose is getting a little sore with blowing it more often, and the last couple of pinches just weren’t as enjoyable as the others. I’ll still be using it up, but with breaks in between, and I’ll not be considering it for bulk. Occasional use only for me I think.

F

unless you have a cast iron gut, spitting is necessary. im just going to use it around the house till i can get some snus, spitting in either a purdeys bottle or toilet. i managed 4 hours at work only spitting a couple of times, but my stomach got a bit unsettled. thank god the air con was drying me out so i wasnt producing too much. as far as blowing, when possible i often go and blow in the bathroom sink with just water- a little disgusting i guess, but it keeps the kerchief clear and stops soreness. as far as using chew in future- not likely. i love the taste, and i like the nicotine, but the fact its more carcinogenic than snus and snuff, i have to spit, and it costs so much more will keep me off it unless i cant get snus. must get some more grand cairo, i like it for a kick, but mines all dried up, the jar i got for it wasnt as good as i thought.

5

Hmmm … by the sounds of it, I’ll give the twist a miss :-S I’m carrying an assortment of snuffs today to let me nose settle down after Grand Cairo upset it with repeated use. Once my order arrives from mysmokingshop, I’ll be picking another single snuff to run with for a while.

5

I’ve had a couple of days of variety, and now I’ve loaded up a snuffbox with 5g of JH Wilson Top Mill to work through. Very silky, but I’m not noticing much nicotine - that might be general tiredness though

F

im at the point again where i dont get my nicotine from snuff so much. i usually use snus, but now im getting it through snus and chew, i had double extra stark snus, chew and loads of toque quit in this morning just to drive me into the shower for work haha. i really must be careful with my tolerance…

5

I know what you mean. My snuff taking has been gradually increasing as a percentage of the days nic intake, but it’s easily disrupted and rendered almost ineffective if I smoke much more than 5 roll ups a day. I’m trying to get the snuff to a primary position, and just use an e-cig when the snuff isn’t quite getting the levels up enough. Not there yet, but heading in the right direction

F

wow, did the same again but this time im not so tired- wow! apparently being tired raises tolerance a bit.

5

wow, did the same again but this time im not so tired- wow! apparently being tired raises tolerance a bit.

It makes a massive difference with me, sometimes it’s not worth trying to get the levels up at all. If your body/mind needs sleep, sometimes this can be interpreted as needing nicotine - so no matter how much nic you get, you’re still needing sleep so your still feeling the need for more I’ve also found this happens if my fluid levels are low. Back to topic briefly I’m not overly convinced with JHW Top Mill. Still running with it at the mo, but repeated apple pip sized pinches are key. Anything more clogs and falls out of my nose (even though it’s fine) or it doesn’t clog and hits my throat. Apple pip sized pinches are a lot better behaved, though three or four a side are needed to feel like you’re had a proper pinch. It’s a nice snuff, but not one I can scoff readily as with Berwick Brown (current favourite), and I have to take my time with it. It also feels a little cementitious in the nose as if I’m trying to take a cast of my nostril. / I’ll stick with it though …

5

Well, the Top Mill No 1 failed me as a sole snuff. It’s lovely, but just too finicky to be used all day on it’s own. Enjoying some GH Cherry right now

F

what do you think to the cherry? ill take a pinch now!

5

I think it would be a little overpowering for all day use, but it’s a lovely snuff for using as part of a daily array. I find the Sea Breezes to be the same too - very nice, but not for prolonged use. I find I much prefer plain or SP for extended usage

F

leave 5g in a wilsons style tin (ie. not particularly airtight) and see how it develops. my first snuff was cherry in a tapbox, and i found i could take it for weeks, wonder if being a little drier made a difference.

5

No No No! I love it the way it is … just not for every pinch throughout the day

F

alright then enjoy! its definitely a favourite of mine.

M

I find the snuff level of nicotine such a delicate thing to ruin ones satisfaction level for. I’m not sure that sentence makes sense. I’ll elaborate. After years (since I was 15) of hard Snus usage it is taking a long time to gauge my cravings for nicotine levels down to a level where snuff satisfies a lot on its own. I’m starting to get there. It’s been about 3 weeks now? I’ll feel a background craving for snus coming and going in waves which fades more and more. Snuff doesn’t cure it through these waves, it just renders it bearable. It’s like it satisfies on a completely different level and feels like two completely different “drugs”… but I know, intellectually, that I am getting the same drug my body is craving and that things would be worse without snuff. However, I bear with it and ride the cravings out like a captain with firm trust in his vessel against stormy seas. It works. And I think it’s worth it. How wondrous wouldn’t it be to get your sole satisfaction from snuff alone and not even think about any other method of nicotine intake? All it takes is a firm goal about it. I like the idea of just keeping it to one thing… and in my opinion you would be messing with your need for nicotine with e-cigarettes, easily. Far too easily. I wouldn’t even chance it. The only way to do it would be to stick to snuff alone and completely ride it out. That’s my recommendation though… to each their own as they say. With continued use of something as strong as dip and/or chew you are never going to really be satisfied from any pinch of Snuff according to my estimates. Snus is easily dozens stronger. I worry slightly in a cringe when I read about people doing a whole array of nicotine types. What a mess. That’s just me though… and all this brings me closer to the point of why I like this thread so much. I really do. I’m really into keeping things simple and refined and your own style defined. Culturally, where I live, the pack of Snus you stick to kind of says something about your personality, identity… it’s like a statement, fashion, mental… take your pick. But you mainly stick to one kind, maybe you alternate in periods, but you experiment… you dont go around with 3-4 packs in your pockets; as what seems to be the norm with snuff. Classic, liberal, conservative, flavored, juicy, dry, long cut, modern, hip, metrosexual, rugged… snus use here in Scandinavia embraces all of that… where as in the US it seems to be more about parading through all of them like a buffet. Though I dont think it should be the norm. I think one should have fun experimenting, probably keep an array at home, but basically walk around with that one snuff that you love and identify with. Keep it simple. Rockin that one pack in your pocket. Simple and cool like that. Instead of fumbling around with a bunch of packs… what is that about? : P Using that one snuff (at a time at least) seems to me like a refined approach. In my mind. Admirable. Honorable. I love this thread and am very interested to see how you go about finding what works for you and which snuffs in general work as staple snuffs - because evidently, a lot of them simply dont! And arent supposed to! Xmas Pudding sure as heck doesnt, in my experience, its amazing as a treat, but not as a staple. Things like that are completely new to me. But I myself am slowly venturing through a new landscape of flavors and styles and finding new snuffs I like to take out with me… but I must say: at home, I really am loving having an array to sample from for different moods and settings; even though having an assortment of as many as 50+ would be too bewildering for me to really enjoy and focus my enjoyment on. But finding that staple, and not messing about with a million kinds of different types of nicotine intake, thats key… for me at least. Sorry, carry on, as you were…

5

Here’s what I don’t like … having several snuffs open, or several snuff boxes on the go, and the snuff going stale/dry before I’m halfway through. If I only have pocket space for one snuffbox, I know I could take Berwick Brown and it’s get used before it spoils, but I’d like to have a choice of at least 4 or 5 I could do that with. Snuffs that I could take several pinches of a day - good accompanying snuffs when there’s room for 3 or 4 snuff boxes, are things like GH Cherry, GH Sea Breezes, Grand Cairo, F&T Princes Special, Field of Junipers & SG Celtic Talisman. Many of the “fun flavoured” Toques fall into this category too, and I keep a few in my desk drawer at work for this reason, and a few more on my desk at home - punctuation snuffs! I know I can put a small amount in a box, and it’ll be used in 3 or 4 days tops if I get the right assortment - nothing too similar carried together. I wouldn’t be able to use them exclusively though Some snuffs are only worth a very occasional pinch, and I probably wouldn’t want more than one pinch a day - Royal George, Bordeau, medium mentholated snuffs, (strong menthols I avoid), also Creme de Figue and Mull of Oa (lovely snuffs but the drip is NASTY!! ). These are a waste if I put any in a snuffbox, and will either get traded or mixed into something I can take more regularly. I don’t mind having one or two occasional snuffs, but it’s pointless having half a drawer full I’m a simple creature really, and I just want to sort my snuff into “primary” that can be carried alone, “complimentary” for when there’s more pocket space, and a limited number of “occasional” snuffs such as a toast or two, a floral of two, and a menthol or two. Right now I seem to have a lot of snuffs open, only one primary, a few good complimentary, but a shed load of occasional … if ever! :-S

M

That sounds like a nice system. I’m curious about what primaries you find. During my routine I wake up with menthol (kick-start), but then when my coffee is brewed I accompany the coffee with Dholakia Swiss Chocolate… and it occurs to me that this snuff has a lot of potential as a primary snuff. Just thought I’d throw that in there.

5

Snuff box loaded up with Toque’s SP Extra now …

5

Emptied the snuffbox of SP Extra this afternoon. While it was OK for a larger part of the day, it was much better when carried and used alongside GH Kendal Brown. I tried carrying them both independantly too, and Kendal Brown would be my preference of the two for sole carry … though carrying both was better still. They work very well together as a double act. The SP box has now been loaded up with JH Wilson SP No 1, and we’ll see if this is any different to the Top Mill No 1 (above) which failed as a standalone snuff. I have also taken advantage of WoS’s Christmas discount code and have placed an order which includes Brunswick, Burgundy & F&T Old Paris (and more besides). Based on the reviews I’ve read, these might be subtle enough for all day use on their own. I still have a load of others to try out too. I’m very tempted to have a run with SG’s 2013 Christmas Special. Considering us snuffers are in the minority, the range of snuffs available to us is simply incredible. It’s like there’s always something new to try.

N

It seems like 6 Photo Kailash is very popular. Maybe I should order a tin of that with my next online order.

5

I find it very messy, but it is a nice snuff. I’d say Kailash is one of the “must try” snuffs like Kendal Brown, Hedges L260, F&T HDT, Tom Buck, and a number of other classics

K

I really recommend 6P Kailash, it’s my all day snuff. Yes it can be messy, but you get used to it and adjust your technique to compensate. Using a the back of a fingernail as a shovel works well for some.

B

I found I get bored even with the best snuffs early on in my snuff use history. This is the reasoning behind small air tight glass storage jars. I can put them away to be savored later. I been carrying just two [St.Casura and Sparrow cool] the last couple weeks at work, but when I get home the variety gets into play. I always keep 6P special close for a decongestant. I have tried this experiment and will return to my old ways and carry a larger variety with me at all times. I have concluded I am not a one snuff type of connoisseur.

5

If I thought I’d ever just have one snuff to choose from, or one beer, or one whisky, that would be a sad day. I have no intention of putting myself through that long term. However, if I can find out which snuffs I could go all day or even all week on, I know which snuffs to keep with me at all times, because no matter what mood or weather, or what problems my nose might be up to this time, I’ll have an old snuff friend I can count on. I want to find my snuffs I can use alone, so that I don’t have to. So that I can diversify and know there’s a snuff that’ll back me up if others don’t work for me if my nose gets tempremental, or for whatever other reason an accompanying snuff might not work for me. Only then will I feel fully confident to walk away from the cigarettes, confident that I have the right snuffs with me to stop me going to the shop and buying another weeks tobacco. This is the nearest I’ve ever been to quitting smoking, and I want to get it right

5

… and SG’s 2013 Christmas Special could easily be an all day solo snuff. Really glad I got 3 x 25g tins of this. Fruity and spicy but easy to take and not overwhelming on flavour. Well done on this one Mr Gregory! Shame this isn’t available in bulk

M

I never use just one snuff. I start the day with something coarse and heavy, usually a Gawith, or NTSU, then mid morning, break into Himtaj or another Indian snuff, like Dholakia Manjul or Kamal, then Toque toasts after lunch. If I leave home for any reason, I grab a variety, stuff them into my pockets, put them on the seat of my old car, and go from there. Sometimes I chew nicotine gum for an extra kick, but I prefer snuff by itself most of the time. Recently, I have been mixing Toque rustica with SP Extra, finding the combination really unique. There must be another set of alkaloids in the rustica because I get a very alert feeling afterwards. At any rate, I used to use one type of snuff daily, but quickly tired of the sameness, no matter what brand. I guess I’m kind of a junky for it, but thats how I do it.

5

That sounds like a nice system. I’m curious about what primaries you find. During my routine I wake up with menthol (kick-start), but then when my coffee is brewed I accompany the coffee with Dholakia Swiss Chocolate… and it occurs to me that this snuff has a lot of potential as a primary snuff. Here’s where I’m at so far. I have tried a few other snuffs, but need to spend more time with them. I’m sure some on the list will move places in time too as my nose changes, and so do the snuffs (with time and batch variations)

M

I use my american scotches the most right now, mostly because I have a lot of them. But something like Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original I could see using throughout the entire day. I just need to get more of it (only have 2/3 of a 10g tap box at the moment). I’m sure as I try new snuffs I will find more that will suit me for all day use.

5

@md363 you really need to try Samuel Gawith in the 25g tins. Totally different experience to the tap boxes. Many of the ones I’m not bothered about in my list are ones that are really popular here. Reviews can be useful to help you compare snuffs to ones you like or ones you don’t, but the one way to know for sure if a snuff will work for you is get it in your face.

5

Jaxons SP Premium is proving itself as an excellent primary snuff for me. I have my rucksack with me today, and therefore lots of snuff to mix up the day with. Had I only been able to accommodate one snuffbox in my pocket though, I would be very happy with the SP Premium to see me through. I’m a big fan of their English Toffee too, and also looking forward to cracking open a tin of 1869 that’s waiting patiently in the drawer.
