I’ve tried many snuffs in my first year of snuffing, some I’ve liked and some I haven’t. Many of them are OK for “punctuation”, but I wouldn’t use them for more than two or three snuffs a day, maximum. Some I can keep dipping into throughout the day, so long as I’ve something else to refresh the nose occasionally, but I think there’s possibly only two snuffs that I’ve tried so far which have jumped out at me as being a snuff I could probably carry on it’s own and use exclusively each and every day. These are JH Wilson SP No1 and Toque Berwick Brown. I have bought a few snuffs in bulk recently, but I want to ensure my bulk is snuffs that I can use continuously and exclusively, and still enjoy every single pinch. I recently got an assortment of 10 snuffs from Toque, and the majority of those are great for punctuation and breaking up the day - and being in the 10g Toque tins, they’ll keep perfectly well in the pocket for occasional use, so … I’m considering loading up a snuffbox with one snuff and using it and it alone for a period of time. A few 10g Toques will be carried, but as back up. If I have to break out one of the other snuffs due to clogging, irritation, boredom or any other issue, that snuff will not be selected for any new bulk. This is not intended as a crazy feat of endurance just an attempt to find which snuffs are truly worthy of being kept in bulk. Let’s face it, right now snuff is available fairly readily, and the only reason for keeping bulk is in case something goes wrong personally, financially or legislatively, and should that happen I don’t want to have snuff I get bored of after a couple of days. Nic content will not be a factor in this, and neither will using snuff at the expense of other pleasures. I will still be carrying an e-cig and/or rolling baccy. The weekend sounds like a good time to start this little experiment
Another point: Most of the time I’m using a snuff, there’s a carry over from the previous snuff earlier that day, or even the day before. This will give me the opportunity to try each snuff without having the ghost of the snuff before affecting my judgement. EDIT: This will also be interesting for me to gauge how much snuff I’m actually using. When you spend each and every day dipping in and out of several pots, it’s hard to get a perspective - and to be perfectly honest, right now I don’t have a clue! Does that matter? Well, it does put the bulk purchases in perspective of timescales “I have a month’s worth of Tom Buck, and three months’ worth of London Brown” etc etc
Good luck with that. I certainly couldn’t just carry one, I need variety (
Yeah, me too normally If it all goes wrong, I’ll put it down as being educational
I’m probably going to start this off with Berwick Brown, as this has been a “staple food” for me for a while. If I can’t do it with that, the chances are I’m taking out of the wrong orifice and need to give it up as a bad job :-"
i currently get by with firedrac and GH Cherry only, since i havent found one snuff to cover all bases (except for ultra fresh GH cherry with a little firedrac mixed in perhaps).
Well, after four (or was it five) consecutive loads of SG Firedance, I can tell you that won’t be subject to the trials. Very nice, but definitely one for occasional use. It’ll be mainly plain and SP snuffs for prolongued usage here I reckon, though there are a couple of other more subtle snuffs I want to try too
Viking Dark Toque quit Almond toast Abraxas premium batch fin As of now, I could use these exclusively, and be happy doing it.

Viking Dark and Toque Quit are two that I have and plan to try as standalones :-bd Not tried the others yet
viking dark may get a bit much, i tried. though summer may have affected that.
I think my nose will be able to handle it, it’s the throat drip I’m more concerned about on the darker snuffs. It doesn’t give me a problem on infrequent use, but cumulative effect might be different
I usually only use one snuff, 6 Photo Kailash. I will have a pinch of something else maybe once a week or so.
Ooooh … Kailash … haven’t tried that for ages :-?
Bare in mind @50ft_trad if you use a wooden snuff box you will have 2 issues which may affect your judgement. 1) The wooden box will to some degree draw moisture from your snuff, affecting how it feels in your nose and to some degree how much scent is left in it. Over the course of a few days a moist snuff will become dry and brittle and will loose some of it’s delicate scent. This happened to my Viking Dark. I like it better from the orginal tin. I suppose a good plastic or glass snuff box/bottle would treat it right though. 2) If using a wooden snuff box, you can air out the previous snuff scent by leaving it completely open for 1-2 weeks. The oxygen in the air will eventually corrode almost all of the scent molecules left behind in the wood. Give it a test of course before you repack it and if it still has a lingering scent leave it longer. For me I can use Viking Dark all day for days on end, I really like it.
@thorgrimnr No problem there mate, I’ll be using a plastic snuffbox I do have some wooden boxes, one which I have been using very recently as I just started dabbling with toasts (my nose has started accepting them recently), and one that sits on my desk with my “Granny’s Stew” in. I’ll not be using them for this though. I have three of the Mr Snuff plastic boxes, and three of the Snuffhouse ones, and I use different colours for different snuff types so I don’t get too confused. One of them tends to have Berwick Brown in it most of the time anyway, so I’ll be using that one to start with. Another tends to be used for darker snuffs, so that’ll be what I carry the Viking Dark in
Go with something plainer. I keep 4 different SPs in bulk and one plain toast. I can use any one of them as all-dayers but I succumb to variety whenever I sit at my desk. About half the time I carry a stoneware bottle of schmalzler as well, usually a plainer one.
Berwick Brown - Day 1 I started loading up my yellow Mr Snuff box with Berwick Brown this morning, then realised I hadn’t measured the weight of it empty. #-o Never mind, I carried on using it anyway. 10 mins ago I decided to weigh my empty blue box - 28g, against my loaded yellow box - 35g. So as of 4pm on Saturday evening, I have around 7g of BB. I have been dipping into it a bit today and haven’t been tempted for another flavour. I have been using e-cig and roll ups though. So far the flavour hasn’t gotten boring or cloggy or sickly, so we’re off to a good start
@Xander With you on the plainer ones! Off the top there’s Viking Dark, Toque Quit, M&W Jocks Choice, F&T Santa Domingo, GH Sea Breezes, & GH Kendal Brown that I already have in. Might not run the test with the Jocks Choice or Santa Domingo though, as AFAIK these aren’t available in bulk. I’ll not be trying Tom Buck, SG London Brown, GH KB Plain ot Toque’s Plain Coarse either as I already have these in bulk I really do want to get some more JH Wilson SP1 in though. That was the first snuff I tried in the little plastic 5g tub, and haven’t had any since. I want to see how I get on with it now that my nose is a little more experienced in other snuffs. I need more Viking Blonde and Viking Brown too
For me it’s White Elephant simply because anything else will make my nose really stuffy if I use it all day.
whiskey and honey … satisfies my toast and flavor preferences.
Berwick Brown - Day 2 Spent another day merrily chugging away on this, plus cigs and the e-cig, and the snuff box is now about half full. There have been times when I’ve reached for the roll ups and/or the vape, but I still haven’t been yearning for a different snuff. At this rate the snuffbox will last me till Tuesday night, or maybe even into Wednesday. If I still feel this way at that point, I’ll happily accept this as one to stand alone and be ordered in bulk. However, I have noticed that it can interfere with other stuff. I had a couple of mixed fruit ciders last night, and the flavours were clashing. That’s not a failing of Berwick Brown, as no snuff is going to be universally complimentary of all food and drink. Just something for me to be aware of and consider
