Am I missing something?

Sorry for this newb question. First, a quick background: 25 year Copenhagen dipper, gave that up for Snus (Skruf Stark Los & General ES Los), which I really like, but as I read someone else say in another post, snus gets boring sometimes (if that makes since)…I don’t know why, as I don’t remember Copenhagen ever getting boring. So I started thinking about possibly adding snuff, and while researching, it led me to this outstanding/helpful forum. Snuff sounded excellent so I decided to give it a try. Ordered some English snuffs. Technique wasn’t really ever a problem thanks to research on this forum…not many sniff too hard or sneezing issues. I found that I really like the initial take snuff procedure, the burn, a little vit N, the aroma, but then immediately after that, nothing…a few seconds after snuffing, the burn, the aroma, the vit N is all gone for me, no matter how much I take. I thought maybe I just needed stronger, so I ordered some American snuffs (Rooster, WeG, Standard, etc) as they have a strong rep. Same issue, great at the time of taking, but immediately thereafter gone. Is this how it is and I’m just over expecting (I was thinking there would be a 15-30 minute enjoyment factor), or do I just need to persevere and it will get more enjoyable over time. I have been at it several times a day for a few weeks now. Thank you for any advice.

I think you are over-expecting. I don’t disagree with you. I don’t find snus “boring”, or dip, but there is such a variety that snuff is just something else. I get the same effects as you. I just find it fun to sniff. I really don’t feel I get any “effect” from it. Just like it.

I get an effect. But it tends to be quick and done as far as the tingle the scalp thing. This is really only from scotches though, it is more of an overall smell sensory thing to me. Everyone’s chemistry and metabolism is different so it is hard to predict. Ken

It takes some time to get used to snuff and not being on constant nicotine drip like with snus/dip.

The nicoteen lives in a south african snuff called NTSU.Its ground very coarse to give a long lasting kick.Take it nice and damp, straight from the container, stinking of ammonia( which is an alkali that aids nic absorbtion into the blood stream) and you wont be dissapointed. Its so coarse that it has to be shoved up the nose. Search for NTSU on this forum for more info. Enjoy !!

Sounds like you went the wrong direction. Going to finer snuffs, like Scotches, will give you more intensity, but less longevity. Such snuffs bear more similarites with a medium pull on a cigarettte. Sometimes it will take several hits to get to the blood level you desire. If you go to courser snuffs, like many of the rappees or South African styles, you will get more of what you are used to, as Allan says, like a nicotine drip.

Taking and enjoying snuff is like having an orgasm, very nice but gone to soon. Difference is, you can take pinch after pinch after pinch without your snuff or fingers going lame.

@Pieter: As much as I like snuff, its still not nearly as good.

I agree with Pieter and Nachman. You can take a pinch, and say if 10mins more you want another one you just go for it. Take however much you want however often you want to satisfy your needs

I know what you mean about that Copenhagen blast when you pack in a fresh wad first thing the morning. Personally, I get so much pleasure now from the sniffing and tasting of the various flavors that I rarely dip anymore. It was an easy transition for me but as someone said, we’re all wired a bit different. Good luck and I hope you enjoy it enough to stick with it. As Xander said, you might be a coarse kind of guy.

Thank you all for your comments and explanations.

let me say first that i’m fairly new to snuffing as well only about couple of months…also i’ve been a vitamin N addict for a long time and if snuff helped give up a 20-30 coffin nails a day habit i’m sure it can help you too; now when it comes to the nic hit there are only a few that i can actually feel from what i tried so far, like toque quit, taxi red, natural toast - still need to get my hands on some NTSU :)) … the scalp tingle sensation i can only get from taxi red and some scotches so far and thats not a guarantee thing… sometimes it happens sometimes it does not … maybe you didn’t find “your” snuff yet… so far and somebody correct me if i’m wrong i find snuff to be more like pipe tobacco, more about enjoying the variety, tasting and relaxing as opposed to the fast quick fix of a cigarette smoke but it can definitely deliver and do the job too. Ra.

I think in many ways snuff is both. Heck the American variants can be used orally for the daring. It is a good swiss army knife as tobacco goes. Ken

I’m sure they could all be used orally if you have the patience. Anyway, taking to something new, especially seeking the same reward from a different source will take a significant transition period. I think I said once before, that brains are a litte slow on the uptake, and take time to adjust to a new source of nic. I cut my smoking drastically when I began snuff, but to eliminate it altogether took many more months. Still, snuff gradually won out. I used a lot of snus and a fair amount of pipe smoking during the transition, but now they are occasional things. Snuff really brings a lot of pleasure, even medium grade snuffs, if you give them time. If aromas have any effect on you, that can really enhance things. I know almost nothing about aromatherapy, but I know citrus scents are invigorating and some floral and herbal scents have relaxing effects. Neroli is like pixie dust for me! It seems to have both the citrus and floral effects.

I’ll say it again I really think that not only does the brain adapt to snuff over time I also think the body does too. I actualy feel like I get more nicotine from snuff now then I did when I started. My nicotine tolerance hasn’t gone down if anything it has gone up a little. I do think that the nose changes in some physiological way maybe the capilaries in the nasal passage change somehow. Maybe they get more dense maybe they move closer to the surface. Maybe they say holy shit it’s nicotine lets grab that up. I don’t know but it does seem much diffrent.

I’ll second bob’s opinion. When I first started, I barely got any effects from snuff apart from the pleasant smell, Toque Quit included. Now, after snuffing for some 3 months, I get a really strong Vitamin N effects from the same amout. And it seems to last on noticeably pleasant levels for 15min or more. Just stick with it, and you just might find yourself enjoying it way more than you ever did cigs.

I’ve only used oral tobacco and snuff with the a cigar or pipe on rare occasions. What’s odd for me tho is after years of constant nicotine use, I just don’t Jones out and have mad cravings for nicotine. I prefer to snuff several times a day but I can go a few days without it if the situation calls for it. Same with oral tobacco (tho I haven’t tried Snus). I’ve never met a cigarette smoker who could cope without a cig for more than a few hours. Maybe there are some smokers that can regulate their use but it just seems odd to me how much of a difference there seems to be just in the delivery method.

I’ve been snuffing for years on and off and it’s quite rare for me to get a nicotine buzz, although sometimes i do. I find i get them more pinching than using a bullet or snorting tube. Snuff does keep me from needing to smoke though.
