…it significantly increases your nicotine tolerance and worst of all totally kills the snuff buzz. I’ve been using snuff 3 years and snus about 6 months. Until I started using snus, snuff used to give me the best tingly head buzz of any tobacco product I’ve tried. Snuffs such as the scotches and whites were so stimulating, I used to compare them with speed, as they used to keep me awake all night if I so wished. I’m now a huge fan of snus and don’t see that changing. It’s addictive and very enjoyable (and so convenient) to use. I’d estimate I spend 70% of my time snuffing, 30% snussing, though that varies. But no matter which snuff I use, however strong and however much I pack my nostrils with it, I get no buzz whatsoever. And I do miss this dearly. A price I’m willing to pay for the enjoyment of snus, but a costly one in my opinion. I’d be interested to hear experiences from other snuffers who also use other tobacco products and don’t get a buzz from snuff but perhaps did at one time. Do you miss it? Also, to those who only snuff, take this as a warning when considering using snus or other forms of tobacco.
Well siad @SnuffySnuff and definitely true. Snus and chew have huge amount of nicotine compared with snuff. Recently i have been cutting back on all forms of snus/chew/snuff/pipe so that i dont actually have it until i really crave it. This way i enjoy it a lot more when i finally have it. Less is more, as it were. BTW, Viking Dark still gives my nicotine addled brain a moderate buzz.
@SnuffySnuff My usage is about the opposite of yours - 70% snus/dip and about 30% snuff. Snus is great to help one quit smoking and it certainly does have a lot of nicotine. I’ve never had a nicotine buzz from snuff but have a couple of times with snus, even after a 25 year smoking habit. I’ve been using snuff in between snuses and it seems that the period of time I can go without snus is increasing but if I were to quit snus cold turkey in favour of snuff I think I’d have a difficult time.
As time goes on we build up a tolerance to nicotine. It happens. I do miss the buzz at times, but then I also miss being twenty something, at times. IMHO :-S
I’ve had to discipline myself to not snus when I could be snuffing. Snus is so convenient and when I get that craving I want it gone quick, don’t want to have to fuss with pinching etc, just pop in a snus and go. So because it becomes too convenient, it means I have to resist. When there is time to snuff, I try to make myself. I enjoy snuff more, much more, but you have to work for it. Its just that snus has the advantage on the convenience factor.
I use all forms of tobacco daily; Dokha and thuoc lao are the only ones that can give me that buzz. So don’t try them!
i am like crullers … if not more … 90% snus, 10% snuff … but i used the snuff to get me over that last 1 or 2 cigarettes I still craved … and the scents of the snuffs are so pure, it really does augment. and i believe the opposite of what most have said, that is, i believe snuff hits quick, and i then pop a snus to continue the nic hit. a little pinch wakes me up, gets me past the craving, then i snus to settle in.
@SnuffySnuff I am like @basement_shaman except I don’t smoke cigarettes and smoke a pipe every now and then. I snus most of the time and either use snuff to top up, or just because I want some snuff (which is daily and either in between snus and whilst snusing). You can get some snuses and snuffs that really complement each other in taste and scent, so it adds another level of enjoyment to the experience. I frequently forget to take snus to work so I always end up snuffing more then, any buzz I ever got from tobacco has long gone and there is no point chasing the dragon with it, I just love the taste and smell of it. Also I have noticed you have been using a lot of Oden’s Extreme, to cut your tolerance down, use smaller prillas of it or find a mini portion or regular strength one (Oden’s Original is great) so when you take snuff you will feel the effects more.
Just speaking for myself I get a pretty strong, noticeable buzz from snuff if I haven’t used tobacco for a couple of hours. I use American moist snuff (i.e. Copenhagen) and sometimes snus (though lately I’ve been sniffing at work) and generally have a decent nicotine tolerance - maybe not basement_shaman tier but cigarettes are unsatisfying. I’ll at least get a really powerful and noticeable stimulating effect and sometimes I get the whole body buzzing thing too, or a buzzing sensation radiating from the area around my nose into my brain.
Thanks for the feedback guys. Having thought about this overnight this is the conclusion I’ve come to. The good thing about tolerance is it’s not permanent. It can go down as well as up. I started off snussing with some discipline but it has grown out of control. To bring my tolerance down, I’m going to use up all my open cans of snus over next few days, and then as hard as it will be, and I know I will crave like hell, I’m going to take a break from snus for a few weeks. It’ll be just like when I gave up smoking using snuff only. It brought my tolerance down but I did crave cigs for a few weeks. Did it then with cigs, can do it again with snus. Then I’ll come back to using snus but much more disciplined this time. Only one standard strength prilla a day and only very occasional use of extra sterks and extremes. I want snus in my life but not at the expense of losing the glorious snuff buzz. Just hope I have the will power to see this through. I think I do. Fingers crossed.
I started dipping about three years before I found snuff. My favourite dip was Copenhagen snuff. I remembering catching a buzz from that stuff only for about my first two months of use. My consumption went up to a can a day about a year after. By then, I figured I had quite the tolerance. In that time I also went through many cans of General Portions for a change of pace (never having a buzz like I remembered). Curious with snuff, I questioned how such a small amount of product could satisfy the N department. It may be just me, but I was very pleasantly surprised, as my first snuff was a lightweight by standards (SD original), and I found it had the nicest effect. Forward now into my snuff career, and I am still buzzing happily whenever I wish. All this after an extensive dip career. In a nutshell, I believe it really depends on the person.
i believe this might be why i gravitate towards, menthol, or general burny snuffs, or fresh ones. my brain doesnt learn to like scents it relates to nicotine like most peoples. i do most of my snuff if im sat around doing nothing at home, or in a morning to wake. snus, cigarette aand pipe at other times.
Snus got me mostly off cigs. Snuff finished the job. Pipes give me the pleasure of burning tobacco , without a lot of the side effects of cigs. My tolerance is probably close to shamans. I can feel my nicotine levels go up and down, but catching a buzz requires doubling up on extra strong snus. I often snus and snuff or snus and pipe. I almost never snuff while smoking a pipe. Not because of the nicotine, but because I find the scents get confused, not in a good way. At this point in my life tobacco use is to avoid withdrawal, not to feel a buzz. Basically I chased the Dragon, caught the Dragon, and now too scared to let go. I’d like to lower my tolerance, but I don’t have that kind of will power.
I never heard of snus before snuffhouse, Thanks SNUFFHOUSE
Actually, just had a thought. Instead of waiting to use up the 7 open cans of snus. Is there any reason I can’t just re freeze them now?
@SnuffySnuff nope, just seal them up in an air tight bag and freeze them, they should still be fine when you come back to them.
Thanks mate.
@SnuffySnuff The very first time I lit a cigarette and took a draw ( I was 27 ) I was driving and seriously felt drunk. I thought how can this be legal? That drunk feeling went away after about a week. I continued to smoke for the next 12 years( half pack a day of filtered lights was my regular habit ). I ultimately was able to quit cigarettes once and for all with snus portions. Though I did make several attempts it took about 4 serious tries. I quit because my own wheezing at night was preventing me from falling asleep and It’s not easy to sleep when you feel like you are suffocating. I grew up in a household where my father smoked a pack a day. Indoors. The snus I used was mostly General and Ettan along with other to try them out. I snused like this regularly for about 5 years. In the past 6 years I’ve noticed a trend in the snus market for more candy flavours, larger portions and to me most alarmingly bigger and bigger nicotine hits. For me, I don’t want to learn to adapt and I have nothing to prove by saying I can. Of course I did try some of the strong portions but they will almost immediately make me fill nauseous. I get maybe 10 minutes through one and it has to go. I don’t think I ever need to try and extreme portion, it’s like instant flu in a pouch for me. I eventually got off the portions through the use of snuff as the portions were hurting my gums. In the past 6 months I’ve gone back to snus but I use the loose snus now and even dip occasionaly. I upper deck all oral tobacco as I don’t like the need to spit. Loose hand baked or “live” pinches as the Swedes say are most comfortable as the tobacco can conform to my mouth unlike when it’s in a pouch. Anyway my usage is now to use oral tobacco when I feel I want it or to give my mouth a break and use wonderful snuffs. It’s all sort of a natural organic rotation. I do limit my snus and dip use for health and financial reasons and sometimes a solid pinch of my favourite snuff is perfect. Ultimately I feel snuff is the best form of tobacco for me, but damn if snus and dip isn’t also really fun and delicious. Sadly I want to try plug now and I’ve had a few fun days with some chew. The one thing I have not understood in all this talk amongst nictotine users is what do they mean about the “buzz” I don’t seem to get or have never understood a “buzz”. Is this slang for the drunk feeling? Are people really after the nauseous feeling or is there some other sensation others are getting but I don’t seem to have the experience. For me tobacco provides a mental lift and a mental focus adjustment. It “pricks” my ears up if that makes any sense, but I don’t have a physical reaction unless I use too much…and as I always maintain an awareness of what I’m using and how much. I make sure not to go too far with any product and am always reminding myself of my health. If I let my guard down I would easily enjoy a half can of snus/dip a day plus boost any low spots with any number of snuffs. Currently I go through a can of dip/snus in 7-8 days and a 25g tin of any snuff will usually last a few months. Can someone try and explain the physical sensation of what is called a buzz so I can all get on the same page with you.
@Roderick ok by that definition I understand. It’s like a subtle perk up in focus and energy. Much like a good strong cup of coffee but different in it’s own way. @SnuffySnuff good luck and we are all behind you! Taxi Red works at pushing back on the snus for me if that helps at all.
A nicotine buzz does feel like a minor intoxication, but without loss of mental clarity. Its a sort of fuzzy, head swimmy feeling. As tolerance goes up the feeling of the buzz fades. If usage goes up to continue to attain the buzz, then tolerance follows (hence the impossible “catching of the dragon”). After awhile, that’s not usually what users seek, we just find satisfaction in the relief of craving along with a pleasant uplifting feeling.
