The change log seems to be back to normal, I deleted ~100 pages of stuff. I deleted the old nose and mailbox threads which added another 400 pages of stuff so I’m working on chopping that down a bit.

Ok, I think the change log is back to a manageable level, 30 pages. Today I also deleted about 20 “dead” threads in the general category. Still a lot of cleaning to do in there.

I’m seriously considering merging the reviews section with “Types of Snuff” since NOBODY seems to use it like it is intended, even those who should know better.

We get Summer (April-October) and Fall/Spring (November-March). In other words, hot and wet or mild and dry. It’s Barnabas, from his foyer painting that hangs in Collinwood.

Ahh, very cool. I used to love that show. I’m not even a vampire fan, and my girlfriend is, but she’s never seen it. Where do you watch? Do you have a good place online to watch those episodes, or do you have dvds? Or what? Are they on TV someplace?

I “got” them from the library and Netflix. Netflix has the entire series starting with the 200 episodes before Barnabas arrives. You can buy the entire series on Amazon for a cool $430. I’m sure there is somewhere to watch them, just haven’t found it yet. Considering there is 2,000+ episodes, it might be a bit much for an online host to have the entire series. I also have bootlegs of the two movies “House of Dark Shadows” and “Night of Dark Shadows” but since they come out on Blu Ray/DVD in October, I will buy them to see the fully restored footage. If your girlfriend is a vampire fan, she should love Dark Shadows… that is if she hates Twilight. Oh, as for them being on TV, I think SyFy still retains the rights to them so they might be on there. I know when the blasphemous movie was released they showed a marathon starting at ep. 211 when Barnabas appears. Well, the target audience is preteen girls, who simply want to have crushes on pretty boys, it makes it all the better if they are “bad” boys. I don’t think they are even paying attention to the story much. Plus they can sell those girls posters, books, videos, etc, etc. Its a merchandising treasure chest! Its like those manufactured boy bands, just a different medium.

The change log is nice and empty. Did someone find a quick way to delete everything, or just plug away 10 comments at a time? I was deleting about 20 pages a day, but yesterday there were still over 600 I think.

I deleted a video Vito445 posted in the music thread. Racist/nationalist stuff. The link is visible in the change log. You can read the lyrics on the Youtube page. However, the lyrics say “beggar” but the singer clearly says “niggar.” If you feel like torturing your ears, have a listen. So if he complains, that’s the reason.

@Xander: The other day I deleted about 900 pages in the change log. I got into a groove of checking, deleting, and confirming. I think there is a circle worn into my mousepad now. I had it down to about 300 then I deleted the old nose and mailbox threads, which added about 500 pages. Come to think of it, I must have deleted over 1,000 pages of crap. Needed to be done, plus I deleted quite a few old threads that were destroyed by member deletions and bad links/images from the first migration.

I find that suspicious considering the issue we had with him and Itsuke. He claimed someone else was using his Youtube acct for Nationalist stuff… looks like he wasn’t telling the truth. I’m doing a bit of houskeeping in the review section and posting a few of my own so people maybe will follow the model. I got Nigel to repost one of his into a previous thread so its all neat-neat. I’m being generous with the random comment posts, if it could in anyway be constued as a review, I kept it. Anway, I’m wondering if we can set it up so that the reviews will be alphebetized by thread, instead of newest on top.

I had the whole front page of “unread” threads… I felt bad like I was shirking my duties… i was only gone like 2 hours! I see now it’s part of the housekeeping…

Mark, its ok to approve if they look legit. I can check the IP anytime after they are approved, so don’t worry about that bit. This guy checks out. Everyone is ok until they cause trouble.

We’re getting spammers in the applicant box again. Not many, but a few per day and numbers are slowly increasing. I’ve declined one with a name of MrSmith something three times now. He merely types “1” on his application. This one is probably a real person and thinks that a robot is aproving the applications.

Had one that typed “test” into the box. Ha, don’t think so.

Denied 5 spammers this morning, another one from “Smith” Next time he/she applies I’m going to send an email, if I don’t get a response then I’ll add the email and username to the ban list.

I have activated the “Stop Forum Spam” add on in Dashboard. Might get rid of some of the perpetual handbag and shoe garbage, as well as people like “Mrsmithxse” I also changed my email password after realizing it was a spammer. Herp-derp.

None so far today. Sorry I was a bit absent last week - we had our daughter and her family staying with us. My granddaughters didn’t leave me a lot of energy for anything else!

I think I just cleared out the few that were sitting there, but that was probably just after you put on the spam blocker. I saw another later that said “why not” but left it alone.

Ok the spam blocker is catching some. The same message repeatedly from multiple sources. I left it up there. I already deleted one of the same kind from the spam queue, and 2 of them from the applicant queue.

More of this same message. Are we just deleting them? I wonder if there is a common thing among them to block them (other than the identical message). I’ve also noticed that the ones who get past the spam blocker to the applicant stage often leave spam in the “Activity” tab. I have been deleting those.

No, It catches at least half of them. I don’t know how it works, but it may learn over time, so it may catch all the ones of these types. Also they don’t get to post in the activity tab. I’m just wondering how it happens that we get bombarded from multiple sources with the same message. Was that what they agreed to do at the spammer’s convention? Cyberspace is bizarre.

This morning, there were 10 of that same message in the applicant box and two in the spam box. However, the spam box showed that those were multiple attempts each. I cleared it all but left one applicant with the enigmatic “just for fun” as a reason to join. real person?

Alex, take a look at user: sharrow1 in the dashboard. What do you make of it? Two accounts seem to be the same person, one under the sharrow mills, another personal. I’m ok with that. What about the other?

I noticed it before. There’s actually 3 at that IP address.

There’s also Squiffy, which is carol@sharrowmills, which I deactivated since it hadn’t been active since 2009. I read through their comments once, they don’t comment often. I think they use those accounts to quietly gage what customers are thinking.

Some of the comments are plugs, some are insiders hiding as non-insiders getting a feel for user’s thoughts. I guess if they don’t raise hell we should leave them alone.

yeah, that’s what I had figured. I wouldn’t be suprised if others had them here too. I know a number of shops did. In any case, I’m still going to deactivate any account that has not been active in two years. September is tomorrow, so tomorrow I will deactivate anyone not active since Sept 2010.

Oh by the way, every so often, maybe once I week, I check the list of users and search only for the “deactivated” ones. Then I arrange them by activity date. If any have come back, I restore their active status by changing them back to “member.” I’ve only had two come back though.

Something else we could do is reset the passwords, might prod some into coming back.

Have you figured out a way to delete whispers? Seems to be the only thing we can’t delete.

I thought about that re: the passwords. However, I’ve tried to reset my own, and I get no emails. I was assuming that their change in status would send them a notification, but I’m not sure. One thing I have noticed is sometimes after I dig through old threads and reassign categories or delete obsolete/superfluous stuff the system starts handing out badges for comments, anniversaries, etc. Sometimes those members come back after that. No I don’t know how to delete whispers other than if both parties delete discussion. Not sure if that will even work. The whisper you and I had in the trade thread won’t go away and is kind of irking me. Maybe we will have to delete the whole thread at some point. I’ve also noticed that I can see other people’s whispers.

Yes, mods can see other whispers. Not a big deal, I think it’s always been that way. The trade thread is annoying me too. I’ve thought about deletion but then we would have to have others re-post. Maybe a rule of no whispers in the trade thread? Not sure if that would work. I don’t want to create another rule, we might have too many as it is.

Alex, did you delete someone? A “deleted user” is showing up as earning a 1st comment badge? Odd.

I guess that’s the best way to deal with it for the BST. If it gets to clutterd by whispers again, we can do the same thing. Alternately we can disable the whisper function. I think most people use the PM instead of whisper, but yeah it probably better to leave it. I haven’t deleted anyone lately, but frequently deleted users get badges. Usually after I’ve been mucking around in old threads. Its been doing that ever since the badge system was implemented.

I forgot that the badges are updated when we are working in old threads. I’d rather keep the whispers, its one thing I loved about the old SH.

Yeah, its a mess. Starting to get full again too. I don’t want to have to wait until its 1000 pages long again to delete it. Anyway, is there anyway that we can make the review section a separate tab without all the categories becoming separate tabs?

I think I have found a workable solution to the Reviews dilemma. I would like it to be a separate tab, but that does not seem possible without making all categores separate tabs. However, there is a check box in the category editor that says something like “do not make this category show up in recent dicussions” so I checked it. The problem is, it only works for the parent category. Since we have child categories for most every brand they will have to be checked individually. I did Atherthons as a test and it worked. I might reset a few more tonight, as I’m working through my own snuff reviews alphabetically and posting them. I’m trying to put photos in if I have them. If anyone wants to help complete either of these tasks, especially if I don’t have the photos, I would appreciate it. Since we can’t make a tab for the review section, can we make a link to it in the sidebar? Maybe even get Dogwalla to make a creative banner?

Oh. After I get all my reviews posted, and the review department squared away, I want to sponsor a little contest to get more reviews up. I want to give away as the prize a PC double snuffbox. I want to go for max number of reviews. Do you guys have any suggestions as to the parameters of a contest? Anybody want to co-sponsor with me?

I think the reviews would have to follow a rubric, i.e. they should be like the old snuffreviews: grind, moisture, nicotine, etc. in a very organized way. Maybe the reviews should also have to include other snuffs that are similar?

Alex, Ok, I’ve written Dogwalla. I asked him to make 2 banners, one small like the sponsor shops and one big that we could put at the top of the page (many forums have a large banner up top).

Not sure, the Review button is actually embedded with html into the forum, the donate button is just a “message” and not embedded. If you go into dashboard and look under pockets you can see how the review button is done.

Yeah I just looked at that. It seems a generic repsonse you could write to join any forum. I bet there will be more of them just like it. Could be real, but maybe wait awhile. Ok, what you see uptop is the best I can get it. If you like it, I will delete the duplicate banner. For some reason when I try to align the banners the second banner jumps down a row. So it’s either this or the review button in the sidebar like it is.

mm. Not sure if I like it. Its not real pretty. What do you think? Was it better in the sidebar? As far as hiding, I guess that sounds fine, though not sure what it means. I thought it was ok since I had switched them from coming up in gereral discussion. I have yet to do this with every child category. The first few alphabetically I have done.

Well, right now the reviews button is just an extra reminder. If we hide the reviews from the list, members will have to go through the button. I think it should be one or the other, button and no reviews in the category list, or reviews in the category list and no button.

I think the reviews will get more attention with a button. I’m not convinced the current design of said button is conspicuous enough. No one seems to have noticed it. Having said that, I do like how it conforms to the subdued, laid back style of our site.

Maybe it’s the upcoming election but I was in the democratic mood and decided to put the badges to a vote. This way Vito can stop whining about them.

Vito’s just a sourpuss there’s nothing that will make him happy. As far as I was concerned, the membership already decided in favor of badges, but this might be a good chance to test the poll feature. Maybe a poll to see if we should keep polls? Maybe only mods can start polls. Maybe give ability that as a unique ISTA privledge. Just ideas.

A few days ago I changed some permissions of who was a member. There were some people on there that barely post, I think there should be some minimum to establish a member.

Well, that’s why I had been going throuh old members. If they had been active once but fallen inactive for 2 years, I simply deactivated them. If they never posted (or posted only one time -usually something bogus too). I delete the account.

I archived all discussions that were older than 2008, which is why they couldn’t be modified. I figured this would be an easy way to move really old threads into the archive without having to close each one. I didn’t think about the reviews area. I removed the archive date.

Heads up guys: My employer is starting to block websites, so far it’s mostly social media. I just noticed that Netflix is blocked as well as Huffington Post. I have a feeling that this site may soon be the same. If that happens my time on here will be cut in half if not more. I’ll try to get on with my tablet, not sure if they have blocked anything with the wifi.

Well, the heatwave has finally broken. Cooler weather here for the last several days, and not forecast to get very hot again soon. Not sure how it is for the majority, or those in Florida or England, etc but I’m thinking in relation to the banner, maybe use the generic one until the leaves start to change.

Yes, the weather has definitely broken here. While the weekend was still warm and sunny, it got decidedly cool yesterday, as low as 1 degree (C) overnight. Makes work rather less tiresome!

So i’ve been tidying in the review section, plus added one new review and copied/pasted about three or four of my old ones. It occurs to me that folks will not notice new reviews, since they are not apparent in recent discussions. I wonder if there is anyway we can have a little light turn on (a la notifications, inbox, etc) when new reviews are posted. Also I was wondering if Dogwalla could do some custom badges for reviewers. Probably it should be similar to the other badges, badge awarded for 1, 5, 25, 100, etc, increasing intervals like the comments badges. Anybody got any opinions on any of the above? @ermtony any reviews/photos you’d care to cross post? I’m working on my own, a couple every few days, when I have time.

Guys: In the future when we close old Nose, Mailbox, and other like threads, let’s not delete them. Instead close them and move them to the archives. You never know what nuggets of info might be in those threads. I think I have erred in deleting these in the past; something I regret now.

I’ve seen several of that type. I’m not sure what’s in people’s heads. If they’ve figured out how to use the computer enough to find this site, you would think they’d also have the sense to see that we’re not a shop.

As long as the threads don’t rise to the surface when new reviews are posted, it doesn’t need to be hidden. There’s a setting to keep them from going in new discussions, which I had been doing manually.

I declined them all. Thanksgiving week isn’t a good time to worry about spammers or trolls. If there are any more fishy ones this week we should leave them until next week. I will be away from the PC from Thursday to Sunday, maybe popping in here and there.

The bookshelves are the hutch of my computer desk, so I look at that stash all the time. The bit of white in the lower left of the pic is top of my computer monitor. I never seem to have enough bookshelves. I decided to keep a stash of available scotches on hand for trading.

That’s a good idea considering the price for them these days. Yes, bookshelves are a hot commodity around my house as well. I’ve been hiding books everywhere. I think the next time I move I’m going to buy a ton of shelves from Ikea and turn the office into a library.

Looks like things have been quiet! Back from vacation, had a nice break. Re: Scotches: I looked in a few grocery stores and corner markets, didn’t find much of anything. There was what appeared to be a legit application in the spam folder, but it was there twice from two different IPAs. I guess the spam filter flagged it because of email frequency. One was 10 times the other 14. I’m not sure what causes that. The application said “new to snuff” from casperbear96. I marked both as not spam, and they automatically went to approval. Since they were identical names, I then deleted one. However, the odd thing is when I clicked on the IP address it changed to *MY* IP address. I’m not sure if its a glitch in the technoworld or a trick by of some kind by trolls or spammers, but this member is certainly not me! Please keep an eye out on this member, and zap him/her of anything suspicious happens. I hope somone cannot hack me through the forum somehow!

Both members have only posted once, both posts were to plug their websites. I have deleted any URL’s and PM’d the members explaining that joining to only plug is not welcome but they are welcome to join the conversation.

I have spoken to “mostlyboxesantiques” and she is interested in being a contributing member, I explained the sponsor deal with her and how it’s not right for shops to pay to advertise while some just post links, she is ok with that. I have also instructed her to engage the membership and then down the line she could post in the BST. As for the other one, I have yet to hear anything from the PM or email I sent.

Today an applicant spammed about a dozen members trying to sell Thuoc Lao tobacco from Vietnam. I received a complaint from a member, so I investigated and then declined the guy’s application - effectively deleting all the applicant’s posts. Now had he not sent PMs to all these members trying to sell, I would have approved his application, since it read something like “I love snuff and want to make new friends.” Anyway, my concern after all this is over is that applicants can PM individual members. They had the ability to create profiles and even post spam (or not spam) on the Activity board, which is not intrusive to the forum or to individual members. I looked in the dashboard to see if I could fix that with one of the little check boxes that allow various powers, but not seeing any obvious one, I left it alone.

This same thing happened the other day. I changed a few check boxes, ones that have to do with profiles and such, should be fixed now, if we have any other issues with it I will contact Vanilla

Was the previous incident also about Thuoc Lao? Some of our members actually responded positively to locating a source for it, but seeing as the guy was an applicant, not even a member, and trying to conduct business, it seemed like he had to be blocked. Had he been an established member this would not have been an issue. Quite a breach of etiquette, which the guy probably has no clue about.

I have added the @mailinator listing to the ban list. An applicant with the username “jjaa” applied with “asdf” under reason. After banning this email addy there were 2 other “members” banned, one of which with the name “jjaa”

Throw a net - catch some fish. Had some big catches months back when we first learned that trick. Sometimes over 100 “members” banned in one instant. I think for awhile there Nigel was just approving every application.

Or it could have been some roque accounts. Apparently “mailinator” allows people to create ficticious email addresses on the fly.

I activated the sharethis, doesn’t look like it has done anything? We used to have all of those things activated, I don’t think anyone used them. Most of the population here either: 1) Doesn’t have a social networking page, 2) doesn’t know what social networking is, 3) thinks the government is spying on them through social networking. I activated them all anyways. I mostly use Twitter these days, I will see if I can sign on with with Twitter id.

With the Facebook and Twitter addons I have to make apps on FB ant TW, I will do this later, I don’t have access to social networks at work.

Mixed. I’ve been talking with Frank about helping him over at Snuffcentral. Its much easier to arrange it there. If making it our own official review site is what we do, I’m happy with that. We just have to build a bridge. However, I’d hate to lose what our members have submitted here (and my own work), so I don’t think we should just do a blanket delete. We need a transitional plan.

I agree. We shouldn’t act too fast. Slow and steady should do.

Fellas: I tightened up the spam settings, we shouldn’t get as much now. I didn’t make it so tight that old members wouldn’t be able to reapply but narrow enough to keep out the heavy spammers.

What are the spam settings?

@Xander: The settings have limits on how many times an IP or email address has to come across in order to get sent to the spam folder or rejected all together. Rejection was set at 50, I bumped that down, the spam folder was 20, that was bumped down as well. @MrSnuff: Chances are my employer has blocked the addon from showing, every social networking “item” is blocked by open DNS, I will check it out later at home.

I buy new snuff and resell to members! Only becuase they can’t find it locally and they shouldn’t have to pay to export it and re-import it making it cost prohibative. However, I do it at a very low profit margin, pennies per tin really, which I’m not even sure covers my time to go and get it. However, I do take your point. He’s not a contributing member.

Dave is pretty tolerant of folks with the BST. Vijay is only here to pimp WE, which he won’t be able to do once Dave gets it in stock… I’m guessing it will be cheaper than $13 a tin.

So, I can’t spell it either. I guess I’ve never heard it aurally either. Its funny, I’ve watched a lot of movies about that, and even when the British army is portrayed as the protagonist, I still find myself pulling for the Zulus. Some of them evoke the postion of the defenders better than they intend. In America, Dances with Wolves is a good counterpoint. Its a shame Kevin Costner is so cheesy, and they seek over-the-top emotional moments, otherwise the movie would hold up.

There was a movie on Netflix the other day about it, can’t recall the damn name. Looked pretty decent.

No appropriate place to post this statistic, but I’m comfortable saying it here; I read recently that the casualties in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined are approx. 4000 US soldiers dead in action. Yet, 16,000 are dead from suicide, including in service, on leave or discharged veterans. That’s 4 times the number of battle losses. I’m not sure what that means to you or anyone else, but to me it says that instinctively they know something they have done or been part of is seriously wrong. Probably very few of them are politically awake, but something in their human nature is awake for sure.

PTSD and other mental disorders. The Govt. is ‘recycling’ troops, i.e. sending the same ones over multiple times. I have watched some interviews with soldiers from Irag and Afghan., most of them talk about how they can’t cope with everyday life, they are always paranoid and on edge, they also talk about the rush of being in battle and how everyday life is a “letdown” compared to it. I think that is the movie, I will add it to my queue.

PTSD an those other symptoms are indicative of long-term depression and/or hopelessness- despair. I don’t think its simply getting addicted to the rush/adrenalin of battle.

Well, I suppose if vets were treated by licensed mental health counselors instead of social workers we might have a clearer picture of what is really going on. It doesn’t seem that the current treatment policy is going to change anytime soon so it will probably be years or decades before things are sorted. Here’s the DSM IV criteria for PTSD, 2 critera must be met for diagnosis: Diagnostic criteria for PTSD include a history of exposure to a traumatic event meeting two criteria and symptoms from each of three symptom clusters: intrusive recollections, avoidant/numbing symptoms, and hyper-arousal symptoms. A fifth criterion concerns duration of symptoms and a sixth assesses functioning. Criterion A: stressor The person has been exposed to a traumatic event in which both of the following have been present: 1.The person has experienced, witnessed, or been confronted with an event or events that involve actual or threatened death or serious injury, or a threat to the physical integrity of oneself or others. 2.The person’s response involved intense fear,helplessness, or horror. Note: in children, it may be expressed instead by disorganized or agitated behavior. Criterion B: intrusive recollection The traumatic event is persistently re-experienced in at least one of the following ways: 1.Recurrent and intrusive distressing recollections of the event, including images, thoughts, or perceptions. Note: in young children, repetitive play may occur in which themes or aspects of the trauma are expressed. 2.Recurrent distressing dreams of the event. Note: in children, there may be frightening dreams without recognizable content 3.Acting or feeling as if the traumatic event were recurring (includes a sense of reliving the experience, illusions, hallucinations, and dissociative flashback episodes,including those that occur upon awakening or when intoxicated). True, but I don’t think its just war that creates this psychology. In Warld War two, there were many more soldiers involved for higher stakes. Many of whom were not professional soldiers, but recruits and conscripts. The big differnce, to my mind, is that they saw that they were working towards some greater good, or that something truly evil needed to be stopped, even if it made them do smaller evils in order to get there. However, when you look at the war from a Japanese or German standpoint, you see a lot of similarities between them then and us now. Sadistic behavior, insanity, etc. There are dozens of movies about POW camps from these places that show you a bit of it. Meaning there was an insctictive drive saying “you are doing wrong” in their minds. Together, the three provide a pretty good historical perspective on the era/region.

My wife’s profession spills over sometimes X_X The suicide crisis is a larger problem than only one causation; there could be multiple causes within that statistic as well as many individual causes. Sadly, I don’t thing the Feds will ever devote the resources to the issue that are needed.

You’ll recall that before Snuffly and Michaelliverpool’s IP addresses were identical. Now it seems that these two and Manit_Joshi are all one. There are now 6 different IP addresses between them, but all trace to the same general area of Gujarat, India. Also I’m noticing a similarity in Manit_Joshi’s name and Michaelliverpool’s emal address. Lastly I would draw your attention to this thread http://www.snuffhouse.org/discussion/7278/how-many-of-dholakias-products-have-you-tried-and-which-is-your-favorite#latest Which seemed harmless, and I suppose still does, but seems an elaborate ruse and some false conversation simply to generate some artificial buzz around Dholakia snuff. Re-read the thread and watch the interaction between these “three” characters and where they choose to place their “like” badges.

Another legit person in the Spam queue: jorgea. It had an email frequency of 7 which is probably why it was flagged. Again when I override and class it as not spam, it’s automatically approved and assigned my IP address as its registered IP.

Interesting to say the least… I know that Dholakia products are cheap, on the original sachets Namrata shipped me years ago they had a cost in Rupees that worked out to pennies in USD. I also understand the way a business works and the way that cost gets added to product so a dealer can turn a profit. Last I checked you were not a charity. I have PM’d Manit still awaiting a reply. I have also deactivated his other two accounts “Michaeliverpool” and “Snuffly.” I hope he doesn’t make any other new accounts and responds to my PM with care. For marketplace: Whatever works out best. I have no objections. Soon I’m going to start phasing out the review section. First I will delete the categories with no reviews. I haven’t yet decided what to do with the ones with reviews in them. Case by case basis I’m guessing.

Life update: Over the past few weeks my wife and I have been looking at houses. We are in the contract process now and should be closing the first week of April. We are starting to pack right now and I’m sure as all of you know, moving is quite a process. Chances are as soon as the ball really gets going I won’t be around much until we are settled. Hey guys! I have a favor to ask. Without going into all the boring details… I have a website, www.rentametaldetector.com. Basically, people lose their stuff, usually on the beach, find me on the web and rent my detector. It’s been great, a few extra dollars here and there but more importantly it’s very rewarding and I have some heartwarming stories of people being reunited with their valuables. I’ve been racking my brain for years trying to figure out a way to expand the concept, it possibly becoming a real viable business. I don’t understand search engine optimization… I just know that when i search the words “rent a metal detector” my website shows up at the top (of google at least) I don’t know if that’s because I’ve searched those keywords so many times or if it only “works” because google knows where I live! What I would like you guys to do for me is: Go to whatever search engine you use, type in “rent a metal detector” and tell me the results. Do you see my site? Is it near the top? Where do you live? Tricky one. There’s no doubt that UK customers get stung by those currency conversion charges. It’s really rather a pain, given the fact that both vendor and customer are in the same country, though I thought better of adding to the chorus of course, even though it’s happened to me several times. My honest opinion, is that banning without warning is too harsh. I did not ban specifically. Steerpike maybe I could see. He was trying to create more trouble even after his issues were addressed. Ad Noseum might have needed a strong warning or temporary suspension. Nigel I just don’t get. Now he’s playing hardheaded in order to be honorable to his word. Its clear that a lot of people often don’t read things fully before they respond, and sometimes the same thing has to be reworded (sometimes a few times over) so that everyone gets it. Also I have no qualms with Dave owning the site, but its clear that a lot of people do and this has added to the strife. There is an appearance of conflict of interest in keeping the forum completely impartial. I don’t think there is anyway we can ever prove that no matter how many times we say it.

Alex, do you think I should email Ad Nauseum to clear the air or do you think that it would create more issues? I agree about Nigel. He seems to forget all of the banning and deleting he did without any second thought but now it seems that since he gave his “word” he can be high and mighty. Mouse hit it on the nose in his comment about ego. I also agree about Dave owning the forum; I don’t think we will ever be able to show that things are done by us and not him but I also don’t know what else to do.

Sorry I have been less than active the last few days (other than accepting a few applicants). Lots on my plate with work and in particular a major headache with the Royal Mail postage price rise needing implementing on my business site. Ok… supposedly if you activate basic approval, CAPTCHA is integrated, however that is not the case. I went through the CAPTCHA signup but now it tells me I have to edit the java script for the forum, no idea how to do this. I’m going to put in a ticket with Vanilla about the basic approval. Also, I PM’d LincolnSnuff about making his ISTA page an “official” part of Snuffhouse, you know like he said he wanted to do… Well, I’ve not heard anything back from him. I’m going to PM him again, and if he doesn’t respond or responds adversely, then there will be a complete moratorium on him posting ANYTHING about his facebook page. I have registered 3 different ISTA pages in different categories, I will do the same with Snuffhouse. This will take some time though.

Its nice to have a convenient link from here, and it’s really better to deflect reviews there than our crazy, hard to maintain review section.

I sank the joke thread. The reviews have already been absorbed into the other category, the softward automatically takes each thread and drops it into where you want, no need for editing.

Yeah, but their titles need editing, since I had removed the maker’s name from the title and just left the snuff name. So you’ll end up with a lot that are the same name lke SP or Rose.

Gents, my girlfriend just surprised me with an impromptu trip to Niagara Falls! She arranged it all and then told me about it afterwards. Cunning. She said she go alone if I didn’t go with her. Sorry Tony, it’s a security feature. It sees that there are logins from Florida and Delaware and flags any logins from overseas. I guess the algorithm is smart enough to know that someone can’t be in 3 places ~X(

Hello snuffhouse staff I awoke this morning with a horrific hangover and the vague but clear enough nightmare memory of my foul, disgusting appalling behaviour on snuff house last night where I venomously attacked Abraxas, sir Walter Scott, Nigel, and snuffers of their products. I am filled with so much shame and regret I can’t put it in to words. It goes without saying I’m sorry. I am sorry. Extremely sorry, but feel sorry isn’t enough. I think the log will show a list of reactions. I think. Sure, we can change over. If you go to the picture hosting thread and find the photo you like just download it to your pc. Then go to the “Banner” section in the dashboard and upload the photo.

If the banner isn’t in that thread then it is 2 or 3 pages deep in this thread in the zip folders.

I have been receiving emails from a “Robert Hunter” for an invitation code. After a few back and forth emails about the code not working he finally redeemed the code. Now he is asking for another code. If he continues to be a pain in the ass I’m going to delete the existing account and block his email address. The gmail doesn’t need to be checked every day, maybe twice a week. I can’t really think of anyone that I would be comfortable with as a mod at the moment. We really don’t have any troll issues to speak of and we really don’t moderate that much when you look at it. Most of the functions are just maintaining the site.

The only “mainstay” scotch I’m out of is Bruton… and I’m very low on D white. I’m dying to try some of these other white Indian snuffs and I think some of the FUBAR line would be up my alley. I invited him. Yeah it seems like we are asking a lot in the application, at least to reasonably intelligent people. The dumb-dumbs keep at it though. The Drew Rossman application I was a bit wary of, since he says so little, but I invited him anyway.

Honestly, when I see an application that clearly doesn’t know what “detailed” or “articulate” is… it goes in the trash. Some just don’t get it and I can’t see them being contributing members.

My basic criteria is: do they mention snuff and seem to know what it is as a corollary.

@lunecat: The applicants will now show up under the notifications tab; you will need to go into the Dashboard to approve/decline members. If the email addresses look fishy or the text they fill out looks odd, decline them. There will be a lot of spam to dig through so please be careful not to approve spammers.

Oops, it might be another icon. Either way there will be a number in red that tells you the number of apps in the inbox. Edit: It’s actually a little gear, you can barely see it if there are no apps.

welcome Lunecat. Sorry I’ve been a bit absent latley and not had much input. I was going to suggest returning to the old applicant process, since our UK mods can’t use the gmail account. With a few more hands there I think we can keep the spammers at bay.

If you happen to approve a spammer or bot you also have the ability to ban the person.

I guess he thought he was being sly by editing his post. This is the 3rd time in recent memory that this member has been addressed. The next time will be a quiet ban.

I’ve given him private warnings from time to time. Mostly for delving into politics (a subject on which he is sometimes rather belligerent). I usually delete the posts. maybe a public shaming will keep him in line.

Also, he wouldn’t be the first to make a post and then think better of it, and go back and change it. Usually, I let that stuff slide, but since its recorded in the change log we know who to keep an eye on.

I hate to say it but I’m kind of starting to agree with JPSavage. The “what” threads are getting a little too numerous. Did a quick count: In the first 6 OT pages there are 29 “What” threads. That’s not including the “What” threads in the other sections. Thoughts? Solutions?

We tend to only archive threads that are a few years old. Right now the only things I can think of doing are one of two options: 1. Make the OT section not show up in recent discussions 2. Put all of the What threads in another category and make that not show up in recent discussions.

I’m still hoping they thin out on their own.

Membership length OR outstanding service to the world of snuff (i’m thinking like the guys that made Snuff Reviews who haven’t been with us 2 years). Activity should be recent though, I don’t think anyone who has not logged in for a year should be considered.

That sounds fair. I’m not keen on granting membership to folks that have 4yr old accts but only log in every 4th of July. I have PM’s out to Dave, Roderick, and Jaap to see if they can offer ISTA members something extra. No freebies but maybe special deals, info, and a window into the snuff world.

No, I don’t think its appropriate. As mods we shouldn’t get involved in these types of things, we certainly shouldn’t offer such commentary. Alex closed the thread.

We seem to be getting a bit of backlash/resistance to ISTA. People don’t like others being exclusive, understandably. They might feel differently if we charged dues. With dues, we’d need a treasury and a treasurer. Then we have to decide what to do with the dues. Should we take over the maintenance cost of the site?

I think the site costs $50+ a month plus hosting fees. I’m not personally a fan of pay-to-play systems. If everyone was allowed in it would be pointless to have it. I suppose if we get much more backlash we can just bury it and be done with the ISTA for good.

I don’t mean to change the membership criteria, just once approved/accepted, they pay dues. If you have 100 members paying $10 a year the cost is covered.

I updated my note to members on the review section, since we no longer have a review section. Chris is there a way to put the Click Here… button on that thread page? I found the old one’s image, but its not a hyperlink.

I think the best thing to do would be to make a list of snuffs and then create a poll. The only way to extract text would be to highlight and copy, but it would be messy as hell.

WTF? I just declined an applicant whose application said “love of bourbon and rye.” Maybe he sent his “love of schmalzler and toast” to the whisky forum. Good grief!

I don’t have a problem with members grabbing things in their area for other members but what he was doing was just wrong, he wasn’t doing favors, he was doing commerce. His pricing was outrageous and exploitative. I know Alex has access to some scotches in his area but he didn’t gouge the members for them, he offered them at a fair price with a little on top for his trouble. I was on the fence on banning cousinstuffy for posting the PM conversation almost 10 times in multiple threads and for calling me a Nazi, but I figured it would be easier to let him stay and not incite the locals.

You guys are awesome moderators and an asset to this forum and David’s business. Lately my free time has become less and less, I’m trying to finish up my degree and my wife and I just found out that we are expecting. I might ask bob, though I don’t really know if he has a serious side, but he is loyal and moral. I’d like at least one, preferably two more full time mods, one at least who has technical skills enough to assist with admin. I either don’t know enough about the remaining members or have not developed enough trust with them. Chris, I’d much appreciate if you could give a letter of resignation to the forum. The reasons can be as vague as you like, but just include some statement of the sort that we are seeking some new help. You can direct all applicants to me. As some have said true leaders arise from not those who seek power but those who have it thrust upon them, I will endeavor to maintain the forum to the best of my ability. Though frankly I’m still having a hard time getting my head around it, since (it seems) just a short while ago, I was asking Alex Schardt for membership here. (I wouldn’t mind him coming back to help now either.) And I don’t really feel qualified, though I will persevere in my existing duties to the best of my ability.

Alex, If you are truly concerned that we won’t be able to find mods, I would be willing to shift responsibilities. I.E., you will now be the sole admin and I will return to mod status. I’ll be more than happy to take care of the technical stuff and delete the occasional post or thread but I don’t want anything to do with handling some of the personalities here or making decisions on what’s right for the board. Let me know.

Nope, no objections. One of the Mr. Snuff banners was jacked up. But it looks like it self corrected. Vanilla has been wonky lately.

The main Mr.Snuff banner often appears off to me, and when its off, its empty box stretches across the screen. Yean Vanilla is wonky lately. Folks are complaining about having to sign in repeatedly, and it was happening to me a lot yesterday. Usually these things self correct after Vanilla gets done tightening bolts and nuts or whatever they are doing.

Thats fine. I reassign misplaced categories routinely. The Library is (or should be) reserved for stories, documents, videos, etc. General is for everything that doesn’t belong to a specific category.

Not sure if I just did the right thing or not… When I logged on I saw a little red flag on my account options, and discovered an unprocessed application. It was quite obviously a spammer so I hit the ‘decline’ button. However, after poking around a little more (because I hadn’t discovered the Vanilla interface until now) I noticed that there was a large queue of applications in Spam Queue. Should I have transferred the application there somehow instead of simply hitting the bugger off button?

No, you did the right thing. I decline one or two a day, nowadays. Nothing like about 6 months-year ago when it was 40-50 a day. I forgot about the spam queue. I’ll have a look at it.

Done. I’ve left two, which although they are not by any means satisfactory reasons for wanting to join do look as though they might possibly be by real people.

New mods: Just to give you some idea of routine duties. Its not an all comprehensive list, and most of its common sense. 1) The Buy-sell-trade thread is an ongoing upkeep. Posts in that thread that are older than 60 days, please delete. If members update their own posts to indicate that their deal is complete, then delete the relevant posts. Also please redirect members to the B-S-T thread if they post b-S-T requests outside of it. When they comply, delete the original thread. This helps keep things tidy. 2) You may delete posts that violate the terms of service at your discretion, especially if they might be inflammatory. However, please do not delete them from the Change Log, until I can review them. I’m reasonably tolerant of occasional mentions of religion and politics, but its a fine line to tread. I have strong personal views on both matters as I suppose many do, but the criteria I use to delete is "does this offend me?, then it might offend someone else. Does this offend someone with other views than my own? (a harder question to answer, but I try to be objective.) very VERY seldomly I will edit or truncate a post, and then make a public note that I did so, in the cases where the poster had some valid points but got off on too many rants-opinions, flames, etc. 3) Do not tolerate trolls or incendiary posts. Do not encourage conflicts between members who may both have a valid point, and do not encourage or tolerate belligerence. You can stop members from posting but do not ban members or delete accounts. These things are rare occurrences, but when they do happen, we have traditionally brought it to the mod forum for discussion on how to deal with it. (We are very democratic in this regard.) I’m the fourth Admin here, and I’ve seen what both too much hands off and too much hands on from past Admins both have had negative consequences. We had an opening for one new mod, but I wanted two, because I want to hear more opinions an decide critical things democratically but with wisdom and justice. We’ve had a few problem members in the past which were admitted substance abusers. Since I’ve been on, I’ve been lenient with them when they can stay sober, even to the point of reinstating banned members. (They are usually forum assets sober - but turn to trolls when intoxicated). 4) Ideas: please bring forward. Csokes was the Dashboard king. I don’t understand how a lot of it works, but there are features available to us that we do not use. Some we have discussed, some not. What I do understand, I manage myself, but only because I’ve taken the duty voluntarily. For awhile I was auditing old accounts to see if they were valid/active, and then either deleting them or “deactivating” them. (Deactive members, by my own rule, were legitimate members that simply had not logged in within two years.) Deactive members are still members, and I reactivated their accounts on the rare occasion that one did return (this takes monitoring of the membership roster). Similarly, really old threads (two years?) if you come across them can be reassigned to the “Snuffhouse Archives”. We had some mistakes in the past where some content got deleted en masse and subsequently a lot of old threads don’t make any sense if read as a conversation. We have kept the threads, and deleted the blank spaces. If you come across these, and there is some good content in them, do not delete the thread, just delete the irrelavent content. Then reassign the thread to the Archives, which is locked from new posts. A lot of this is simply busywork to keep the forum efficient. But the point was that if there was indeed some good content, then it should not be deleted. 5) Other commercial enterprises: As you may know the forum is owned by Dave a.k.a. Mr.Snuff. Dave has been a member here since before he was a commercial enterprise. Alex from Gemany sold the forum to Nigel (Snuffster-now Abraxas) when he no longer had the time to devote to it. With Nigel it was similar, but he wanted to spend his time crafting Artisan snuffs, and sold it to Dave, who by that time had a commercial operation established, and was a paid sponsor. I stick to Alex’s original precedent on this: If you want to mention your commercial operation in a post (mind you, this is not just personal trades and sells, but a business) you can mention it. If you want to post a picture or a banner etc., then you need to pay for space. Since Dave owns the space I just act as a mediator. Direct them to me and we will sort it. Dave is gracious enough to allow us to decide these things, and he will chime in here from time to time when appropriate. Sadly due to the way things are politically, there is not much of this (multiple enterprises) nowadays (since once we had at least 4 snuff shops advertising here). but nonetheless, we are neutral as far as that is concerned but must be fair to the owner and benefactor of our site. That’s all for now. Just a quick (long and not thought out) indoctrination for our new moderators. But anyone with any questions about anything (forum management, moderating, administrating, ownership, commercial, debates, fights, membership squabbles, or font color-- or anything) just bring it up here and we can discuss it and choose the best route forward. P.S. sorry, we don’t much discuss snuff in this thread-its almost all business (though we do become friends), but sometimes sponsors give us a little gift, so I toast you with a pinch of Tom Buck!

6. Oh yeah! I forgot to mention, one of your primary duties is approving new members. For awhile we got a lot of spam, but technical tools helped us deal with a lot of it. My basic criteria for allowing new applicants to be members is “do they mention- or seem to at least understand, what nasal snuff is” thankfully some of the automated filters help with this but generally I reject applicants that seem to have no clue (blank applications, or looking for something free (discounts, coupons, ect.) or make nonsensical or generic applications.)

Chaps, have you seen the post from snuffer RE taxi red I the bazaar? I was in two minds about removing it but he isn’t actually selling anything (yet) just canvassing opinion about demand, so I left it as I don’t see it as a problem.

Technically it should be in the BST thread, but then as you point out he’s not actually selling it. Leave it for now, delete in 60 days if its unchanged. If he sells it later, it goes in the BST thread for 60 days. I used to get Taxi by the roll from Pieter Claassen. It really is dirt cheap there. Shipping is the big cost.

I get my taxi from family in Cape Town, 10 tins costs about £2 or so and I always stock up whenever I go to SA, great thing about the UK is there is no tax on snuff so I could literally bring a suitcase of it back with no issues

Ok. Nobody approve him. I tried to reset his password, and Vanilla won’t let me make any changes since the email address was in use by another member. Turns out he is also “snuffmaster” and been with us almost as long as magicdust, since 2010. So no way he’s getting a third name. I nulled out the email address of snuffmaster and deactivated that account. I forced a reset of magicdust’s account. He can keep that one. Watch and see if he can log in now.

I don’t use facebook, so it can’t be me.

I think we’ve discussed this before but I wanted to ask again… Is there any way to prevent “new” members from starting a new thread till after a certain number of posts or time or something? Every time someone joins and immediately starts a new thread, it’s always to complain about something!!! I know other forums have this ability…

I have noticed this recently too, been away for a few weeks and some of the whingers threads are silly! Maybe it’s an admin thing to add a caveat to joining on starting threads, some forums have it as high as 30 posts. If it can be done what sort of number would you feel reasonable? I would say in the 10-20 bracket.

I have added the IP to the banned list, keep an eye on the applicants and report any add ones in here,see if we can spot a pattern he uses, if, as he says, he has numerous emails. I think he forum spambot might pick up a few so keep an eye on the spam queue. I have just cleared it out so won’t (hopefully) be too much to wade through amongst the usual fake ray bans etc.

I went back and had a look at the post to see if I had overreacted, and decided that I hadn’t, given the complaints that followed his post. I have replied as follows:

Justin 4:03PM (Today) Clearly I need to be more direct. I don’t have a problem with the fact that you don’t like his politics. I do have a problem with the way in which you intervened. Go and look at the thread again - in particular at the posts that turned up immediately after yours. They seem to think that you dropped in to start a fight. I also think that you dropped in to start a fight. Please don’t do it again, or you will be banned.

I hope that’s OK (and that he has the sense to keep his mouth shut for a while…) Justin

I REALLY screwed up by accepting that member. I didn’t notice his user name. Someone already called him a “nazi scum” on his thread. I think we should just delete his account now, I don’t think there’s ANY chance this will go well. Any thoughts? Sorry guys!

I’m sure he specifically chose that username with the sole intention of causing problems and spewing his disgusting views.

He’s Russian. I’ve changed his user to “GenericUsername” to expunge any mention of his ethnocentric garbage. Edit: Eh, fuck it. I gave him a nice… positive user name.

I saw it this morning and did a double take at the name, I didn’t approve or reject it as I lost my signal on the train, then I was on the underground and once I got into work, plain forgot about it. I would have rejected it purely on the username (pesky signal!) and I have not long finished work/trying not to go mad with work, I always miss the fun!

He has been pissing me off for a while now so I wouldn’t mind seeing the back of him tbh. I have held back speaking to him due in part to having been a bit drunk when he has really annoyed me, so held off. I will jump in if needed.

@lunecat I agree - I don’t think he actively picks fights, but he lacks the social skills to see the consequences of his posts. Once this has been pointed out to him a couple of times we don’t have many options left. Yellow card seems about right. Happy to help if needed.

Chaps, our friend cigshurtmylungs is at it again in the Does your dog like the smell of snuff, thread. Another tome on why we are all wrong, again! No one has risen to it yet, so I’m keeping an eye on it.

I just clicked on “cigsh…'s” username and I saw an exchange with “saucyJack” but nothing else. I used to see the pm’s right in the thread that they written on… not any more. I think I’m missing something. IMHO the “cigs” guy needs to go… maybe not yet but soon.

Wow… interesting reading!! He starts to apologize a little and admit he’s not always easy to get along with… then he goes back to insults… for no reason… Narcissistic? Bi-Polar? I wish I knew more about psychology…

On another subject… there’s another tobacco grower / snuff maker in the pending applications… what do you guys think about chefdaniel selling his snuff here? I wouldn’t like it one bit if I was @mrsnuff

I have just warned chef about that this morning. He keeps opening up new threads hawking one thing or another. It doesn’t bother me if he keeps it in the trade thread as he is a one man band and a decent guy, he just wants people to try his snuff from what I can gather and he does contribute to the forum overall. Hopefully now he will keep it in the trade thread, but it isn’t his first warning over that.

Just seen the application. We can approve him and just remind him we aren’t a shop so if he is here to hawk his stuff, be warned. Or, he appears to just be an enthusiast who wants more info, which I have no problem with, he could be a valuable member if he knows about Rapé snuffs etc.

@lunecat‌ well, he likes to talk doesn’t he! He doesn’t seem to have the ability to rationalise or accept that someone may have a different opinion than him. I used to have a guy on my team exactly like him, amazing at his job, but acted like a teenager and always argued if you didn’t share his view, we found out he was mildly autistic. As I said before, my issue with him now is he will drive people away, also his ‘medical’ views are dangerous as he is often wrong, a doctor he ain’t!

I think “chefdaniel” needs to lay off the theads in the bazaar. He should have a single post in the b/s/t thread instead of having 12+ theads in that section. I think its getting a bit excessive, just my .02

I have warned him about this few times, most recently last week. He replied saying he won’t do it again and will keep it to the trade thread (as I asked him to). Looks like he ignored that! If he wants to keep doing it he can pay as far as I’m concerned, he has had enough warnings about it.

Agreed - good call on cigs. As to St.Pedro, I also agree with @Skell18 - if he had been serious about playing nicely he would not have re-joined under other names and carried on doing the same thing… @lunecat - I don’t think you’re being officious at all!

Chef Daniel PM’d me asking that the thread about artisan snuffs be closed. I disagree since I find it well within norm for people to complain about one brand or another; we can’t be expected to stifle out every thread that voices the disdain for a particular brand… I think the thread should only be closed if the attacks become personal. My .02

@cstokes4‌ I agree, nothing in it has caused me any concern yet. I’m not one for closing threads simply because someone doesn’t like X snuff. Not everyone likes what others do, it’s how we find new things. I have had my eye on that thread though.

I think he’s in a different league to cigs or st.pedro - he seems to be a bit of a plonker at times as opposed to being just plain anti-social. I got the impression a while ago that he was not very happy in real-life terms, but I haven’t had many dealings with him recently. If anyone else thinks it’s a good idea, since I haven’t had any difficulty with him in the past I could always get in touch and politely request that he keeps his head down for a while. His response to that might give us a better steer as to what to do next.

Is there a problem with iOS compatibility or a bug at the moment? Andrew, I’ve given you admin access, all of the banners are in the “Pockets” area. Try to familiarize yourself with it. The banner size limits are 180 pixels wide, keep that in mind. I have resized the SWS banner.

RE uncle squinty, he has been having issues with his login,moor whatever reason he can’t access the site with it. I reset it and logged in with it and it worked ok so we think it is something his end with his translation software. I mooted with him reapplying and them deleting the old account then changing his new username to the old one so he can hopefully reuse the site. Sound ok to everyone?

I have emailed him to tell him to submit a new app and we will approve it, then do the above. Keep em peeled chaps, or leave it for me and I will sort it all when he sends it.

Chaps, fredh keeps pestering me due to the spam ratings he has (they are from the stuff he posted on my profile that were deleted). I found one in the spam filter (now I have his comment back on my profile) but I can’t remove the other one. I am at the point of telling him to just accept it as, despite telling him not to post to my wall but to PM me he did and it was removed. Before I do (and he crys again) can anyone remove the spam from his rating? If not I will tell him. Also I would be wary of the free tobacco guy,meh can post in the trade thread if he wants to give it away but I am just skeptical it’s a con and once he has members details it won’t be good.

Last night i got my package from India, my Cheeta from Vikas. I hate to say this but it was “only” 150 grams. I know how greedy that sounds! 150 grams is certainly a generous gift but I am disappointed. More than anything else I was so looking forward to having a 500 gm container of snuff! Just to posses it, hold it… I still can’t really conceive how big it actually is. Oh well. I love the cheeta and it was a perfect choice so thanks for the recommendations from you guys!

No worries Dave. 150 gms is still a lot of snuff, for me. As soon as you get some of the larger size scotches I’ll order and pay full price. Besides that I need a medicated to replace my JH no 99. Maybe I’ll try one of the Six photo “6’s”

Yikes! I’m not sure what to suggest either. I think we can probably ban him just because he’s under 18, if for no other reason. I think he’s gonna be annoying… at least.

Andrew, I’ve had a member tip me off about a situation and upon some investigating I have found that you have 2 accounts here. While the silly point system on the board is just for fun, a moderator manipulating it by using another account to bump up their own points is pretty bush league. I’ll leave it up to you to explain but as far as I’m concerned if a regular member were doing this it would earn a ban.

I don’t know the background to this, but since it has been raised in this thread, if I get any say in the matter then I would not be in favour of accepting Andrew’s resignation. He has done a huge amount for the forum, and I think everyone should be allowed at least one error of judgement.

Can I just ask why you did it Andrew? What is the benefit of having the most points or most likes etc? Why did you want the most? I agree that Andrew has done a lot and is a good mod, personally I don’t think you should resign but I will respect your wishes if that is what you want.

I also think resigning is too extreme. I also don’t understand the reason for wanting to accumulate points…
