From now on we have some moderators around. You are able to close discussions well as delete comments. Deleting a comment actually just hides it to everybody but me. You’ll find a “delete” link beside every comment. In case of emergency, feel free to contact me via phone (see contact tab above). Please only act upon emergency and report your actions here. To see who’s a moderator search for them.
We have an own category “moderation” for all moderating purposes. Discussions in this category can only be seen by us moderators.
Hi Alex, Thanks, I am glad to help.
I’m honored to be part of this group! I’m thinking I’ll only delete the very blatant stuff, like the troll from last night. I’m not really trying to be a censor.
Who is that guy Tex, I have never seen him post?
I was wondering the same thing about Tex.
@miamimark: Then you are on the right track.
Tex is my test account. Be kind to him.
LOL I thought it was your twin brother in America!
It’s an honour to be aboard, thanks for your trust in me.
Thankyou for your confidence Alex, it will not be abused.
Alex, in the need to close a discussion, as opposed to deleting a comment, what is the procedure?
In order to close a discussion, please have a look at the top left. There you can bookmark, sink and close a discussion. Sinking means, the discussion doesn’t move to the top anymore if it contains a new comment. To delete (= invisible) a comment, have a look at the top right of the comment.
Ok thanks.
I don’t want to widen our role beyond what is strictly needed, but can I make the following observation and suggestion: as things stand we can sink, close and delete. However, to my mind, this does not cover the potential case of someone maliciously posting on numerous threads one after the other. The moderator would then be forced to ‘follow’ the troll from thread to thread, dealing with the offensive material after it had been posted and, in all likelyhood, viewed. Would it make sense for us to have the capacity to temporarily - pending Alex’s final decision - suspend an account? I didn’t see any of the stuff the other night - fortunately it seems - but this seems to be an example of when that faciltiy may have been useful. As the sole decision maker is Alex, and we ourselves are just as subject to the rules as anyone else, I think this could be added without any undue issues?
That is a very good point, but not possible at the moment. I can only enable moderators to be able to change roles or not. Changing roles includes changing them to admins, which is like god mode. Even though I am sure you would not misuse this feature, it is to critical. Sorry, but I cannot offer a solution here. An easy way to find all discussions and comments of a user is doing an advanced search. That’s what I did after banning the troll and deleted one after the other.
Since this is for “our eyes only” I’ll ask what I’ve always wondered: Couldn’t a troll just open a new account with a differant email?
Ok Alex, thats fair enough. I certainly wouldn’t want administrator status, if that is what it takes. Probably time to just see how this works out now without putting up too many ‘what ifs’ Miamimark - yes, is my understanding, but as Alex intimates, there is a limit to what we can do I guess…
Yes Miami, they sure could. A lot of the forum banning today therefore works on IP address ranges and subranges. The problem is that is much too broad. Let’s say some guy from Miami comes on and starts posting spam or other objectionable material. So we ban his account. Then we see he comes back and signs up for another account. This happens very often. So they ban his IP subrange, which happens to be everybody who comes from Miami ISP International (imaginary company). The problem is, you and two other valuable members also came through that same ISP, so when they banned his subrange they also banned you. This happens ALL the time. The other thing is to ban people by email service signup. Some guys comes through me@mail.com and we ban him. Then another guy comes from newguy@mail.com and we ban him. After awhile we get sick of it and decide most of the people who have accounts at mail.com are idiots and spammers so we just ban signups through mail.com. The problem is when a guy who has been using mail.com for 10 years and has everybody in the world who knows him contacting him through that one email account, he doesn’t want to change it. And maybe he can’t find another email service or doesn’t like the privacy terms of use, etc. The only way to really control things when the forum starts getting to some stage (and I think it is still aways off thankfully) is to approve individual signups and have reduced privileges for some short period (for example, no posting images or links for 25 posts or whatever). This is not perfect, and no signup system can ever be perfect, but what it does do is make it more trouble than it’s worth for some miscreant to try to ruin our forum. Now on another topic, guys, I would ask your help: I feel it’s important to never allow personal attacks on any forum where we really want to foster a family atmosphere like we have developed here. I mean here people have posted about losing a family member or a beloved pet, about losing a job, about moving to a new country and these are all hard things and most of the people have been very supportive. I feel we can’t allow this magic to be destroyed by people with bad manners or personal attacks. Of course this is Alex’s forum but I would beg you all not to tolerate any sort of personal attack. Everybody has the right to contribute about snuff and shouldn’t be insulted for his views/comments/etc. We also have some gay/lesbian members on the board. While I personally object to this, it’s not my life and they have my respect as fellow snuffers. Thankfully everybody was well-behaved when they announced their lifestyle here. This is too good of a forum and we have a wonderful mix of people, so please guys lets remind anybody who makes personal attacks that it’s not acceptable, and let’s make sure it doesn’t continue. Thanks to Alex for the best snuffing board of all time!
I got the feeling I have chosen the right people to become mods. I always have the option to got to manual approvel if troll keep coming.
