The weight of 25 gram tins WTF

My bad. Taken care of it.

I said this in an other thread, but tins are filled by volume, not by weight and tins are not even advertised as certain weight, but as small, medium and large etc. Only bulk snuff is sold by weight.

@AllanH Are you sure about that? I’ve only ever seen them advertised by weight, not only on most online shops but also on the manufacturer’s websites they always say - 10g, 25g, etc. I don’t think they say small, medium and large because they’re not accurate descriptions and it could mean anything.

@Theatre: You are quit right. All Kralingse Molens boxes are filled by weight. The weight is mentioned on the box and in the shop of our website.

Jaap Bes.

I think the “when packed” added to the weight is kind of a disclamer. They can just say they filled the tin one day, weighed it, and added the lids a month latter.

Interesting thread, since I too noticed a large tin of JHW was less full on opening than I expected.  I just assumed they used large tins. Doh!

Even the Viking tins that weigh out to 25 grams of snuff have plenty of air space in them. The ones that are 8 grams short have more space
:))

1/3 less snuff is a quality control issue.

The thing is, they were bought out by Imperial (I think) years ago and their production left the old mill. This has been mentioned before in respect of US snuff makers - kind of head office doesn’t even know what produce. I bet the machine has been spitting cans of SP out since they moved shop and there’s one old guy drinking tea and doing the crossword giving it the occasional whack with a hammer.

@Theatre You’re right, I was thinking about ‘traditional’ snuffs and snuff mills, things have changed.

After opening a tin of SG Black Coffee a long while back and finding it half full, I started weighing all my purchases. I have a digital scale that weighs in milligrams. I think SG just “eyeballs” the snuff and fills the 25’s by hand. I’ve had the lighter snuffs come in over by 3 grams (Irish D Light) and some coarse snuffs short by 7-10 grams (Black Rappee, London Brown, Scotch Black). To be fair I’ve also had GH 25 gram tubs come in at 15 grams. Andrea at Mr. Snuff took care of the problem quickly. Toque always comes in heavy regardless of mill, and in all formats tin and bulk. WoS seem pretty accurate overall but their tins suck. Dholokia is accurate as well. Caveat Emptor.

There are Truth in Labeling laws, but enforcing UK laws from the US would be painful. Better a strongly worded complaint to the snuff maker and a nice note to sweet Andrea at Mr. Snuff does the trick every time.

Roderick, I agree with you and Lunecat as well, but I’m a realist when it comes to US government agencies. Based on personal experience I’m not ready to waste several years, literally, over a few grams of snuff. Life’s too short. I won’t go to our Veteran’s Administration for medical care lest I get put on a nonexistent waiting list and die while waiting for treatment. It’s in the news here in the US and the VA Secretary just resigned over the scandal. Just posting an overseas package at our Postal “Service” can take an hour, what with waiting in line, dealing with a moron employee that thinks Luxembourg is an exotic cheese then taking 20 minutes trying to navigate out of the parking lot into the street without risking life and limb. I’ve been waiting three years for the Social Security Administration to decide my disability despite sworn affidavits from 4 medical specialists, 12 hearings and reams of correspondence. I guess they need that $700 a month to cover their happy hour expenses. Plus I’ve only paid into the system for 45 years, so I’ve not paid my dues. I don’t think I’ll live long enough for the FDA to determine the outcome over a few grams of snuff from the UK; once they figure out what snuff is. Google has too many moving parts for them to do a wee bit of research. Also, there’s good reason that you, Johnny, Nigel, Jaap, Dave and Andrea are held in such high esteem around here. You’ve earned it by being at the very top of your game, dedicated to craft and customer, have a service oriented temperament and are all around wonderful people. I wish you all were running our so-called government. //rant over//

yeah is it packing weight? Some snuff lose their moisture.

The tins are vac sealed so no moisture loss. Also at issue is there is no quantity or weight printed on the tin. The only reference to weight is on the prices quoted on websites, so no Truth in Labeling laws are applicable. There might be Truth in Advertising laws being violated but that is the responsibility of the retail vendor, not the manufacturer. Hence the tendency of some purveyors using the generic “small-medium-large” to indicate size rather than weight or volume.

@chefdaniel: you make a good point about the weights not being printed on the tins. They are advertised and sold to us, as the retailer, as 10g/25g or whatever. We simply pass along the information. If it is incorrect I wonder who would be considered at fault…I suspect the manufacturer since they clearly state in their price lists “25g tins”. We as the retailer can’t be expected to weigh every tin and I think it is a reasonable assumption on our part that we are getting what we are paying for and you as the consumer are too. I will email Bob at SG. I don’t for one second think SG are deliberately trying to gip anybody. I suspect they will be ‘happy’ to hear about this because it will give them the opportunity to sort things out. I will let you know.

@MrSnuff‌ I’m not looking to point fingers or find fault. This is not a chronic problem but one that arises on occasion, prompting me to weigh the tins/tubs just to verify. Once burned, twice shy, Caveat Emptor and all that. I would hope that your supplier would reimburse you on those rare underfilled tins. GH seems to be the most egregious, and their 25 gram tubs, if not tightened and taped well can leak. I only like GH Kendal Brown and Eucalyptus, so not a big deal. A curious thing; my last three tubs of G Smith (RIP) Cafe Royal came in the exact same tub, were packed very tightly and each came in well over 25 grams. I use a digital scale and an empty tub/tin to Tare the scale. At the prices G. Smith (RIP) charged, they dang well better be full!. I agree, and don’t think for a second, that a 200+ year old company would intentionally gip anyone either. I am a huge fan of SG snuff and pipe tobacco; they are easily my #1 brand. The problem is sporadic, but it’s happened often enough that I do a quick scale check when I receive my orders. I also weigh all my Saffron orders when they arrive because that shit is rất tốn kém

gotta weigh saffron that stuff is worth more then gold.

@Bob, literally, for the good stuff. I did a trip to Iran in 2013 and got stuck with a whole bunch of unexchangeable rial. All the Persians I met who travelled overseas said, just buy saffron, it’s worth more than Iranian money. They often take it overseas to resell to get around exchange laws. Not having a ready network of purchasers, I gave some to my epicurean boss as a gift, the rest I’ve been sprinkling on fried eggs. A gourmet breakfast! Hmm, to keep this post vaguely on topic, I’ve weighed the contents of a few tins of Toque Quit and some Abraxas products. In both cases, I found that it was always slightly over the stated quantity.

So SG, Viking, J & H Wilson all have underweight issues? Any others I’m missing? Does this still happen with the 25Gs too and lower? Also does this happen with larger 250 Gram + tubs too?

I haven’t had a problem with SG, Viking or Snuff Store tins for a long time. I’ve only had one GH tub of KB and it came in spot on.
