Have to Quit Smoking

I quit smoking 3 weeks ago using snuff only - To be honest i was expecting hell but its been smooth sailing. I used Toque Quit and Wilsons Irish High Toast, just substitute a smoke with a pinch.

I too used snuff only to quit smoking, reduced cigs for a week then was nothing but snuff. I had some withdrawals - couldn’t sleep and was sweating unexplainably a few times, but that lasted about 4 days. I was using W.E. Garrett at the time, as that was all I could get locally - thankfully I got some stuff in from internet retailers quickly, and the variety kept me distracted long enough that I didn’t think about cigarettes so much. Been almost 2 months, and I don’t see myself going back.

I recommend that you use a snuff variety which is close to the cigarettes you prefer - i.e. an unscented, pure tobacco flavour. Like Stu I used Wilsons Irish High Toast to quit smoking, and when I had a recent relapse (yes I confess!!) I used the American Scotch snuffs to quit, since the feeling and the nicotine blast did for me what I needed to quit the cigarettes. A pinch every time (no limits!) you feel the need for a smoke. To me it took about 2-3 days, and then I was thinking of pinching instead of smoking. A lot of the addiction is mental. I got myself a nice silver snuff box, very tactile and nice, to fundle and keep in my hand, which substituted for my lighter/cigarette :o) It actually works a LOT better than all the horrible chemical nicotine substitutes out there.

Welcome Val (sorry but that’s easier to type) I think the best thing is to use something that you can happily use a good deal of as you will need to substitute at least a couple of good pinches everytime you crave a cigarette. The plainer snuffs have always been easiest for me to take a lot of, so I would suggest things like Toque Quit, McChrystal’s S’nuff, WoS Best SP, J and H Wilson’s SP and - if you can take them without too many problems - any of the various High Dry Toasts; but beware as they can be very penetrating and sneezy. I switched a couple of years ago from occasional, but long standing, snuff use and smoking to full time snuffing. It’s surprising how easy it can be when you put your mind to it. A good couple of pinches whenever you want to smoke and the craving should go in a few seconds. A couple of tips from my own experience: dont run out and make sure you have plenty of snuff around - in the car, your desk drawer, wherever. I found using a nice snuff box that was tactile and good to hold kind of replaced the way that you fiddle with cigarettes and lighters etc. I kind of made up similar rituals to when I was a smoker; having a pinch or two after a meal, taking my time with the pinch and what not. Obviously, a cigarette takes a few minutes to smoke where a pinch just takes a few seconds so I would appreciate my snuff box, take my time and savour the moment. Now, two years on, the only time I have a cigarette is if I consciously decide to have one - the habit is gone and I could happily never smoke again. One last point - and I know there is an asthma issue for you as well - but if you have a cigarette don’t beat yourself up and get on any guilt trip, just get back on the wagon. You will get all the support you want here and I’m sure you will crack this, no problem. Maybe treat yourself to a nice new snuff box to get yourself in the zone. Snuff is much nicer taken from something elegant rather than the tin.

Great advice here. Let me add a thought. The fine dry snuffs do give an immediate nicotine blast, but the coarser grinds provide a longer, more even infusion. Many people will tell you that Wilsons or Sam Gawith Kendal Brown is a medium strength sniff. I suspect they are blowing it out too fast. If you can retain it for at least ten minutes, you will find very decent nicotine satisfaction. This applies to most of the F&T line, and schmalzers as well. Good luck and welcome to the snuffhouse.

How ya feeling now stitch?

I’m feeling a lot better lately. Thanks for asking. The house deal I was pursuing fell through so it’s back to square one on that. But yesterday I did walk for over an hour at the beach and it had a salutory effect.

Sorry about the house but if you are feeling better thats the main thing, nice to have you back around mate.

I recently quit smoking with snuff and the funny thing is I wasn’t even trying to quit! 15 years worth of marlboros at 1 to 2 packs a day gone jut like that, and O&G mcrystals did it for me. The first stuff I truer was toque quit and I’d rather snort fiberglass and aluminum powder than try that again .I just picked up rooster and it is awsome although I don’t believe anyone really need something that strong to quit. Just bang a couple bumps of ur favorite snuff when u get the urge and that’s it. Since I quit smoking my blood pressure has droped to a perfect range , I cantaste my food , and can breath alot better.I would start with something easy on the nose just so u don’t loose interest in snuffing and help keep u from smoking.the ones I would recomend is Spanish gem(very pleasant and good nic),o & g also has decent nicotine , ozona president is another one easy on the nose ,just buy like 30 flavors and try em all ull find ssomething u like

Good advice - just take some snuff and you will get through it, and you might be surprised how easy it is like Nosechaw says.

I am just into my third week of no smoking using snuff.I had given up cigarettes a few months ago,and started smoking a pipe, but found myself inhaling the pipe smoke like a cigarette,so figured there was no point. I had used snuff at work before,as we only have one smoking break in a nine hour day,so it gets a little rough. So far it has been quite easy, just taking snuff when I get the urge and it keeps it all in control.Breaking the habit was the hardest. The first one in the morning with a coffee, and after eating is the hardest, but I am finding I am looking foward to a big pinch of snuff when I wake up,not a cigarette.Just take it one day at a time. I have just ordered some Toque quit and a few others,so looking foward to receiving those. Alex

Get a nice sniff box, for me it just cemented the change and mentally made it permanent somehow…

A snuffbox made all the difference for me. It was a mental thing. I spent 25 years with a lighter in my pocket, when I quit smoking I missed it. Took me 4 or 5 weeks to figure out I did miss it. A nice heavy wood snuffbox gave me the replacement I craved. The hardest part of quitting smokes was the physical actions, not the nicotine. I need to play with my lighter/snuffbox, snuff also replaced the hand to mouth(nose) motion more than snus did. Plus I missed the smell of the tobacco, which I think is why I gravitate to plain snuffs or ones that have a strong tobacco scent beyond the flavors.

I must say though my nicotine consumption has probably went up with snuff .on the days that I get stupid with it I wake up at 4 or 5 in the morning dying for a hit! So I sleep with a bullet and when the urge comes and I’m tossing and turning I take a few and fall back a sleep , but that’s only when I get Tony Montana with it. The only ti e I crave a smoke is after a meal or when drinking. It seems like we are just as addicted to the act of smoking than nicotine .I save that act for something worth smoking that more benificial

Thank you all for the wonderful advice; I’m at 5 days without a cigarette! Yay!

Glad to read that! Congrats!! The first few days are very critical and then it gets really dangerous at about the 7th week. When you reach the point where you think you´ve made it, it gets the most tempting to “just smoke one, cause you´re not addicted anymore”. I´m currently at week 6. But then I have snuff and snus. Today I´ve taken my first snus just about 10 minutes ago, 8 pm. The nicotine levels decrease and you´re more and more able to satisfy the nic cravings with snuff (which I did for most of the day), the longer you stay absent from cigarettes.

I smoked for 15 years I think. When I smoked it was a pack of Camel light’s (20) each day. As I approached 30 I began to notice the ill-effect of smoking. Though it wasn’t something that physically limiting me but the writing was on the wall that there would come a day when it would be. And more than likely there would be other problems perhaps far worse than the first ‘real symptom’ of anything. I quit for health reasons. I was ready so I did it cold-turkey. After six months I bought a can of dip out of boredom with long drives for work. I hooked myself on nic again (this time with full cognizance of the consequences) but wasn’t limited by the medium. For a while…then my gums were getting trashed. Then I found that heavenly Snus. My gosh…it’s fantastic. Now this place has shown me and excellent tobacco product that I believe is even more satisfying than a cigarette. my wife socially smokes and there’s [lately] been a pack around the house. Now, I’ve had the odd one. Yech…now, since comparing snuff to oral tobacco I appreciate the nic hit of a cig like the next guy but I never did in the past. Anyways…I’m rambling. A healthy congrats to all who quit. I don’t think that an odd one here or there would be so bad for you, but then again each time I have one I remember why I don’t smoke them anymore.
