Well my first 10 tins of toque arrived and I am still a little apprehensive about giving them a shot. They all smell extremely menthol to me, or is that just the ammonia smell I have been reading about when you first open up a tin? Do i just dive right in and try to get it in my nose and quit these cigarettes once and for all. I’m doing all I can to kick the cigarette habit, I’ve ordered snus recently and two orders of snuff, one from toque and one from MRsnuff. Any quick pointers of anyone elses first venture into snuffing would be greatly appreciated and what to expect because I’m still not quite sure.
First, the snuff: a lot of people like it as fresh as it comes and feel that the ammonia smell is a part of that freshness - it’s entirely a matter of taste. Some folks air the snuff for a few hours. My advice is to use it as it comes; it will air naturally enough just in opening and closing the tin. Second: the smoking. Lots of people have used snuff to quit and it is a genuine and viable way of doing it. The simplest way is to simply take a pinch of snuff as soon as you crave a cigarette. Eventually the craving will be for snuff. It will take a while to get used to it, and also of dealing with all the smoking trigger points but it may be easier than you think. Make sure you always have it to hand, savour the moment and take time to appreciate it and it will slowly but surely start to kill the cigarette habit; it’s as simple as that. Read the Quit with Snuff information at Mr Snuff and also look up Prof Philps Griffiths site for some more inspiration. By the way, if you do have a cigarette don’t beat yourself up just start again. When I quit I actually said to myself I would have one if things got too bad. I’ve had less than 20 in the last three years. The great thing is that you are not loosing your nicotine habit and snuff is an infinitely more pleasurable form of tobacco. I also, just my personal tip, say that having a nice snuff box helps. Sounds weird but for me it just made those snuff moments more fun and just having a nice tactile snuff box to hand made it slighlty more special. There’s a lot of psyhcology involved here so anything that elevates the act of taking a pinch is useful. Good Luck!!
Toque is always super fresh and fresh snuff smells of piss. I trie to take it straight froma anew tin but it just smells of we so I personally let it air for an hour or two after which its perfect.
Congrats on the orders!! I quit cigs first with snus then snus was a gateway to snuff. Snuff is great to calm the cravings right away. The snus will keep you level
Congratulations! You’re on the right road. By now I’m sure you’ve tried that wonderful snuff and are on the road to happiness. I love Toque, pretty much every flavor I’ve tried has been a joy. I know what you mean about the ammonia smell but it goes away as others have said, and you’re left with the great aroma of the tobacco and its flavorings. The best part to me is trying to tease out the components in each flavor - which I can’t do worth a damn. But it’s fun to try. For what it’s worth, I still smoke a few cigarettes a day. There are those times when I haven’t been able to give them up yet. But I’m amazed at how well snuff delivers the nicotine for me. I’ve been a hardcore smoker for more years than I can count and used an electronic cigarette for a long time. The snuff has pretty much replaced the ecig for me except for those times when I really want to feel something in my lungs. Then more often than not I hit the ecig rather than a cigarette. I’m getting there. Key is not to beat yourself up for smoking if you do it; just keep putting them off as long as you can and replacing with snuff. It will come around if you’re dedicated to quitting. Good luck and have fun.
One thing no one tells you about quiting cigs with snuff. Is that because of all the healing and clearing of your breathing body parts your nose isn’t going to react as kindly to snuff. So don’t worry about sneezing and running noses and even if a pinch seems to burn more then it should, much of that is an effect of healing the damage of smoking. The snuff will also help with some of the healing aspect and will become much more pleasant and easy to take with time. What I’am saying is don’t think that your inital experience of snuff will be accurate to how it will be in a month or two when you’re body isn’t in defense healing mode. Welcome aboard and enjoy, seriously I don’t understand cigarette smoking anymore I mean snuff is actualy so much more enjoyable. P.s. I’d let the tins air out the ammonia even though a small amount is going to disagree with you more right now then later for the same reason as stated above. Ammonia is not good for your lungs I doubt the small amount in snuff will effect you normaly but since you’re lungs will be healing the amonia will certainly irritate your lungs more then normal and make the snuff so much rougher.
Thanks for all your responses so far, Just popped open the blueberry tin to try for my first one and as I currently let it air out I am having what I hope to be one of my final cigarettes but I’m not too worried. With the seemingly endless choices and cheap price of this stuff I can’t ever see spending 10 bucks for a pack of Marlboros ever again. I see that a hanky is a staple for the runny nose, is the runny nose something you just have to deal with or does it eventually go away once you end up getting used to it?
Depends a bit per person and per snuff, the running nose thing. But snuff does not disolve, what comes in , needs to come out

I’m still very new at this but it seems to me that some snuffs definitely cause a runny nose more than others.
Best advice I got when I first started was take a deep breath first, then just smell the snuff don’t snort. Start with very small amounts and move up once you feel more comfortable.
The nose run happens sometimes more sometimes less. Though as I go on it tends to be less extreme then it was orginaly. Your nose definatly gets used to snuff after a while. When I started my nose ran 100 percent of the time now not so much. Plus diffrent snuffs do have diffrent effects why it’s important to try a lot at the begining and see what makes your nose the happiest.
@djbrown01: You will want to invest in some tissues or some good soft bandanna handkerchiefs (dark colours).
Different snuffs affect different users but a couple of constants are menthol and highly flavoured or very fine - these cause a lot of people congestion - often you will find certain snuffs do it for you however long you use. 30 years in and there are still a handful of snuffs that I can’t take. I’ve always found that the drier, plainer snuffs give me little or no runny nose. In any case, you need, a few paisley hankys - with practice you would be amazed how discreetly you can use one. Plus, when you are more used to snuff, you can pick your time to blow, as opposed to it being an almost immediate reaction. Think back, most tobacco is hard to use when we are not used to it, snuff is no different, but is massively more pleasant than smoking, when you get the habit. Soon enough, snuffing goes from being, a bit of a traumatic experience, to being pure pleasure.
