Have to Quit Smoking

V

Hello to all, First off, I’ve been lurking for some time now, so hi! I do have a question though: What would you all say are the best snuffs for quiting smoking? I’ve seen a few threads on this topic, but was hoping for some new suggestions. I developed asthma recently and have to stop smoking immediately, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Valeriana Atropa

I

I think many will suggest Toque Quit. The best way I think is to try a few variety and find the one you like most. This way you will have more incentive to keep using snuff. Good luck~~

M

I’m slowly winding down from a 45 cig a day habit. If you have access to Snus as well as Snuff, it makes cutting back or quitting much easier IMO. The Poeschl Snuffs are very easy to take for beginners, but the Nicotine content in them will probably not be too satisfying if you are a heavy smoker. Toque SP Extra has a good amount of Nicotine, but with that one the training wheels are off and you’re suddenly in the Tour De France! QWS (Quit With Snuff) has a variety of different flavours and is designed for smokers hoping to stop the habit. It might prove a little ‘sneezy’ for someone new to Snuff, but I find the ease of use and high Nicotine content quite pleasing. Toque Quit, or Original are also quite easy to take and provide a good buffer against cravings Good luck to you!

L

Taking a pinch every time you think of a cigarette is good practice. That worked for me.

X

Get a lot of varieties, and get so enthused about trying them all that you don’t have time to smoke, and eventually lose interest in it. Well, that’s what happend to me. It took about 6 months to work my way down to almost no smoking at all, but if I was trying, it might have been quicker.

M

My computer table has turned into a Snuff repository! 15 tins accumulated in the last month and a half alone. Small Potatoes(!!) compared to Xander’s collection, but not bad for just slightly over six weeks with a tiny budget.

C

It will get there, Mr_Snuffy. I snuffed the same 5 snuffs for about 2 years. Then I went wild. After I make my next Nicotine Rush order, I’ll be pushing 320, not including doubles and triples.

V

Thanks, guys! I should have mentioned, I’ve been snuffing casually for a few months now, so my technique’s halfway decent. So harsher snuffs are fine, I just have to quit immediately. Got pneumonia with the asthma complications and nearly got sepsis and died, so, well … yeah. Anyway, thank you all for responding so quickly!

C

If it’s nicotine you are looking for: Rooster Standard Quit SP Extra NTSU Taxi Red

M

Ouch! Not good is an understatement. Glad you’re on the mend!

X

Ach! My collection is small potatoes next to Cstokes’, Leman’s, Ermtony’s, and, well just about everyone who’s been here longer than me. These do have a tendancy to grow on you, though. Kind of like, “How did this many clothes hangers get in my closet?” thing.

J

I’m going to have to recommend snus as well. Snuff has drastically cut my cigarette habit (at least when at home with my entire snuff collection only an arms length away) from almost 30 cigs a day to 5-10 . What really got me off them for some time was snus and snuff together. Snus gives you a continuous stream of nicotine , so you never feel the craving , and the snuff gives you that little “boost” that makes it somewhat similar to the first drag off a cigarette. Now maybe this is only valid for some , i mean I’m a regular nicotine fiend and go bonkers if i don’t have my dose , especially during finals :). At the moment I’ve relapsed into smoking while still snusing and snuffing because of the said exams , I’ve got one tomorrow! But I’m confident i can just forget about the cigs as soon as I’m done with them and get myself some more General ES portioned snus. That being said there’s nothing like being able to take a pinch and pop in a portion during an exam while looking at the rest of the smokers all sweating out due to the stress and lack of nicotine. I’ve been able to replace my nicotine source and didn’t feel the need for a smoke , but i still relapsed due to the habit of smoking like a a turk when studying. Snuff and snus will make it a lot easyer for you , and since you’re highly motivated due to medical reasons i’m sure you’ll succeed. Good luck!

D

I’d suggest FUBAR, both the Grunt and R&R varieties. I also concur on the Toque Quit and Rooster. While the names are annoying, they are nevertheless nicely-flavored nicotine-laden products.

E

My collection isn’t all that huge! It’s just that over the years I’ve gone through a lot of different snuffs… You can see on my Snuff Stash page just how many I no longer have on hand. They’re the ones in italics.

X

@ ermtony: I count 161 varieties “on hand” if your inventory is up to date. Plus, a lot of those you have in bulk. So you have less different ones on hand than me, but you probably have more snuff overall. It stands to reason that over time after trying so many, you concentrate on your favorites. I think you must give a lot away too… sorry to hijack your thread, Valeriana

I´ve also had a pneumonia about 6 weeks ago, so I´ve dropped the cigarettes just the same day and didn´t look back a single minute. Tbh, I couldn´t have made it with snuff alone. I´d picked up snus about 3 weeks prior to it, to reduce smoking, to better get the snuffs. So I was lucky as far as it concerns the nicotine source replacement thing. I guess it highly depends on the amount of cigarettes you are smoking. There are alot of people who quit smoking with snuff, so of course it must be possible. Well, I stopped smoking for a year without any replacement, so it´s possible to stop anyway. Snus just did it for me. You don´t waste a thought about cigs when you take a snus bag and you can leave it and get flavour and nic for about 2 hours, making it very economical and effective. Had about 5 bags a day in the beginning and around 3 these days. The more I use snuff, the less I use snus. Depending of course on how much nicotine you absorb from a certain snuff. Toque´s and Dholakia´s are pretty effective in nic and taste great.

L

I must warn you. There is a hidden danger in snuff! Making your own snuff collection is more addictive than smoking. The more snuffs you try, the more you want to try. If you like snuff, you will forget about cigs faster then you think. Welcome to the new exciting world of snuff!

B

Snus was my preferred quit smoking technique. BUT I couldn’t completely quit using snus alone. Snuff was the final straw. I snussed and then used snuff to kill the cig cravings. When I first started snuff I did 4-6 pinches a day. Now I have adjusted to loving snuff and use it instead of snus sometimes. I recommend QWS Smokers Blend/natural, Toque Quit and SP Extra for the big cravings. Everything else for the other cravings. I am gravitating to the SP or natural flavors.

V

The amount of support that has poured in so quickly truly overwhelms me. This is an amazing community, that I am thrilled to be a part of.

B

I would agree with some here that if you are stopping smoking suddenly, you may want to keep some snus or dip in your back pocket for the hard times (while you suppliment with snuff) . I still do this from time to time when I know I may have the urge to smoke. A couple cigs for me and I’m climbing back on the conestoga wagon! My Dad always told me it’s not hard to quit smoking- walk over to the garbage and drop them in-yea, he never smoked! But if you start out hitting yourself hard with the high nic snuff and suppliment with snus if you feel you must and just do this when you crave a cigarette, I believe you will succeed! Watch out for when you start to feel better health-wise. For me ,that was always when I went back to smoke. Keep smilin and keep your nose full!!! Good luck…

S

I quit smoking 3 weeks ago using snuff only - To be honest i was expecting hell but its been smooth sailing. I used Toque Quit and Wilsons Irish High Toast, just substitute a smoke with a pinch.

F

I too used snuff only to quit smoking, reduced cigs for a week then was nothing but snuff. I had some withdrawals - couldn’t sleep and was sweating unexplainably a few times, but that lasted about 4 days. I was using W.E. Garrett at the time, as that was all I could get locally - thankfully I got some stuff in from internet retailers quickly, and the variety kept me distracted long enough that I didn’t think about cigarettes so much. Been almost 2 months, and I don’t see myself going back.

V

I recommend that you use a snuff variety which is close to the cigarettes you prefer - i.e. an unscented, pure tobacco flavour. Like Stu I used Wilsons Irish High Toast to quit smoking, and when I had a recent relapse (yes I confess!!) I used the American Scotch snuffs to quit, since the feeling and the nicotine blast did for me what I needed to quit the cigarettes. A pinch every time (no limits!) you feel the need for a smoke. To me it took about 2-3 days, and then I was thinking of pinching instead of smoking. A lot of the addiction is mental. I got myself a nice silver snuff box, very tactile and nice, to fundle and keep in my hand, which substituted for my lighter/cigarette :o) It actually works a LOT better than all the horrible chemical nicotine substitutes out there.

A

Welcome Val (sorry but that’s easier to type) I think the best thing is to use something that you can happily use a good deal of as you will need to substitute at least a couple of good pinches everytime you crave a cigarette. The plainer snuffs have always been easiest for me to take a lot of, so I would suggest things like Toque Quit, McChrystal’s S’nuff, WoS Best SP, J and H Wilson’s SP and - if you can take them without too many problems - any of the various High Dry Toasts; but beware as they can be very penetrating and sneezy. I switched a couple of years ago from occasional, but long standing, snuff use and smoking to full time snuffing. It’s surprising how easy it can be when you put your mind to it. A good couple of pinches whenever you want to smoke and the craving should go in a few seconds. A couple of tips from my own experience: dont run out and make sure you have plenty of snuff around - in the car, your desk drawer, wherever. I found using a nice snuff box that was tactile and good to hold kind of replaced the way that you fiddle with cigarettes and lighters etc. I kind of made up similar rituals to when I was a smoker; having a pinch or two after a meal, taking my time with the pinch and what not. Obviously, a cigarette takes a few minutes to smoke where a pinch just takes a few seconds so I would appreciate my snuff box, take my time and savour the moment. Now, two years on, the only time I have a cigarette is if I consciously decide to have one - the habit is gone and I could happily never smoke again. One last point - and I know there is an asthma issue for you as well - but if you have a cigarette don’t beat yourself up and get on any guilt trip, just get back on the wagon. You will get all the support you want here and I’m sure you will crack this, no problem. Maybe treat yourself to a nice new snuff box to get yourself in the zone. Snuff is much nicer taken from something elegant rather than the tin.

S

Great advice here. Let me add a thought. The fine dry snuffs do give an immediate nicotine blast, but the coarser grinds provide a longer, more even infusion. Many people will tell you that Wilsons or Sam Gawith Kendal Brown is a medium strength sniff. I suspect they are blowing it out too fast. If you can retain it for at least ten minutes, you will find very decent nicotine satisfaction. This applies to most of the F&T line, and schmalzers as well. Good luck and welcome to the snuffhouse.

A

How ya feeling now stitch?

S

I’m feeling a lot better lately. Thanks for asking. The house deal I was pursuing fell through so it’s back to square one on that. But yesterday I did walk for over an hour at the beach and it had a salutory effect.

A

Sorry about the house but if you are feeling better thats the main thing, nice to have you back around mate.

N

I recently quit smoking with snuff and the funny thing is I wasn’t even trying to quit! 15 years worth of marlboros at 1 to 2 packs a day gone jut like that, and O&G mcrystals did it for me. The first stuff I truer was toque quit and I’d rather snort fiberglass and aluminum powder than try that again .I just picked up rooster and it is awsome although I don’t believe anyone really need something that strong to quit. Just bang a couple bumps of ur favorite snuff when u get the urge and that’s it. Since I quit smoking my blood pressure has droped to a perfect range , I cantaste my food , and can breath alot better.I would start with something easy on the nose just so u don’t loose interest in snuffing and help keep u from smoking.the ones I would recomend is Spanish gem(very pleasant and good nic),o & g also has decent nicotine , ozona president is another one easy on the nose ,just buy like 30 flavors and try em all ull find ssomething u like

A

Good advice - just take some snuff and you will get through it, and you might be surprised how easy it is like Nosechaw says.

A

Get a nice sniff box, for me it just cemented the change and mentally made it permanent somehow…

B

A snuffbox made all the difference for me. It was a mental thing. I spent 25 years with a lighter in my pocket, when I quit smoking I missed it. Took me 4 or 5 weeks to figure out I did miss it. A nice heavy wood snuffbox gave me the replacement I craved. The hardest part of quitting smokes was the physical actions, not the nicotine. I need to play with my lighter/snuffbox, snuff also replaced the hand to mouth(nose) motion more than snus did. Plus I missed the smell of the tobacco, which I think is why I gravitate to plain snuffs or ones that have a strong tobacco scent beyond the flavors.

N

I must say though my nicotine consumption has probably went up with snuff .on the days that I get stupid with it I wake up at 4 or 5 in the morning dying for a hit! So I sleep with a bullet and when the urge comes and I’m tossing and turning I take a few and fall back a sleep , but that’s only when I get Tony Montana with it. The only ti e I crave a smoke is after a meal or when drinking. It seems like we are just as addicted to the act of smoking than nicotine .I save that act for something worth smoking that more benificial

V

Thank you all for the wonderful advice; I’m at 5 days without a cigarette! Yay!

R

Glad to read that! Congrats!! The first few days are very critical and then it gets really dangerous at about the 7th week. When you reach the point where you think you´ve made it, it gets the most tempting to “just smoke one, cause you´re not addicted anymore”. I´m currently at week 6. But then I have snuff and snus. Today I´ve taken my first snus just about 10 minutes ago, 8 pm. The nicotine levels decrease and you´re more and more able to satisfy the nic cravings with snuff (which I did for most of the day), the longer you stay absent from cigarettes.

I smoked for 15 years I think. When I smoked it was a pack of Camel light’s (20) each day. As I approached 30 I began to notice the ill-effect of smoking. Though it wasn’t something that physically limiting me but the writing was on the wall that there would come a day when it would be. And more than likely there would be other problems perhaps far worse than the first ‘real symptom’ of anything. I quit for health reasons. I was ready so I did it cold-turkey. After six months I bought a can of dip out of boredom with long drives for work. I hooked myself on nic again (this time with full cognizance of the consequences) but wasn’t limited by the medium. For a while…then my gums were getting trashed. Then I found that heavenly Snus. My gosh…it’s fantastic. Now this place has shown me and excellent tobacco product that I believe is even more satisfying than a cigarette. my wife socially smokes and there’s [lately] been a pack around the house. Now, I’ve had the odd one. Yech…now, since comparing snuff to oral tobacco I appreciate the nic hit of a cig like the next guy but I never did in the past. Anyways…I’m rambling. A healthy congrats to all who quit. I don’t think that an odd one here or there would be so bad for you, but then again each time I have one I remember why I don’t smoke them anymore.
