hello everybody im new i have a 1878 unopened bottle of railroadmills maccoboy snuff the seal has never been broke on it never opened ive had it for about 6 years a friend found it in a attic of a old house can any body tell me anything about it or what its worth thanks sharon
Hello Sharon. Chances are that it is not from 1878, that date is usually a trademark date. Is the bottle round or square with a round neck? The really old Maccoboy’s came in tall round jars with a clasp lid. Could you post a pic?
I need it for my vintage Maccoboy hoarde. Seriously though, I’d like to see a picture. Can you give the measurements? Patent date should be 1870.
Here is mine. Does it look like this one?
Thats a standard 1 oz (or like the 1.15 oz one today) Its about 3 inches tall. The cork is not original. This revenue stamp dates it to 1951. Does yours look anything like that?
Tis a nice bottle, Xander.
Yes, but I must have a Lorillard one so it won’t be lonely.
Xander, did you try that vintage Maccoboy, or is the bottle still sealed?
I’ll be hard pressed to get rid of my Lorillard bottle. If I find another, you’ll be the first to know.
@ kjoerup: I did try it. The cork was crumbling when I got it. so I got rid of it and the top quarter inch of snuff. The snuff was really dried out and course with odd white crystals in it. It was pretty awful. Then I took out a few grams and ran it through my rehydration process (along with a sample of Lorillard Maccoby that cstokes sent me). Each one absorbed about two beer bottle capfuls of water via indirect method. They both perked up very nicely. The crystals, which I am now sure were salt, disolved right into the mix. Both are very good snuffs now, and despite both being named Maccoboy, they are both pretty different. Getting one in pristine condition would have been nicer, but I’m pretty happy with these. @cstokes4: Thanks! A few still turn up on ebay, but I keep getting outbid.
Maccoboy is salty. I tried it as a dip.
