I have had good luck with house blends. Picked up a couple “flagship” blends at a tobacconist in Denver.
Peterson’s Irish Flake, Irish Oak, Old Dublin, University Flake. If you can get hold of Presbyterian Mix, try some, it’s one of my favourites. Dunhill London Mixture is also niec but I prefer the Pete’s. MM corncob pipes are the best smokers, will beat any briar (ANY BRIAR) everytime. Anyone here dare to argue with me about this fact?!!!
depends on the pipe. Seriously the same blend can be awesome or terrible from diffrent pipes. For high nic try five brothers that has some definate kick.
Northwoods. Lock it. Load it. Smoke it all day long.
I’ve smoked what seems a million different blends and I’ve settled on a few - Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake, Esoterica Penzance, and Esoterica Stonehaven. I’m not into all the fruity flavors, vanilla, chocolate, etc. I just like simple Virginia tobacco. It smells and tastes amazing, and is easy on the mouth.
@PieterClassen I’m a huge fan of the MM as well. I have 2 briars and I’m blown away by the fact that my $3 gas station MM smokes better every time.
Wow 1 oz every few days is a fair amount especially in a corncob I’ve probably only smoked 17oz in total over a year, I’d definitely buy pouches of carter hall and prince albert. House blends aren’t really bad but they’re usually aromatics with a low nicotine content. I’d try 1q (it’s gold colored with black strands) and BCA (Black cavendish no cherry or vanilla flavor). I’d buy either dunhill royal yacht or Peterson’s irish flake. Those two and prince albert will probably help you stop smoking more than than aromatic tobacco in my experience prince albert and Royal Yacht/Irish Flake are the only blends I’ve smoked with a significant amount of nicotine.
well I do smoke around 5 or 6 bowls a day. Oh and i picked up some of that captain black… like every other review I read I believe my offering to be stale. it is real’y dry but still very flavor’full and aromatic. but it did cost me almost $5.00 for one and a half oz’s but I bit the bullet and got it any way. not bad but I realy wish it was a little moister, and cooler smoking.
You should try 1q and BCA those are essentially the bulk versions of captain black but they’re cheaper I think 1q is pretty easy to smoke for an aromatic. I again strongly recommend buying prince albert or carter hall, if you have a drugstore near you they usually have pipe tobacco pouches and tubs of it. They’re both really cheap like 3-4 dollars probably and you can buy 14 oz tubs of them for cheaper. Some of the stuff were recommending is fairly expensive btw royal yacht and irish flake are around 10 dollars for 50g without any taxes. Bulk is way cheaper than tins. Oh and where do you find the time to smoke 5 bowls a day lol?
If you want some seriously strong pipe tobacco then you need to get yourself some GH&Co Brown Irish Twist - http://www.gawithhoggarth.co.uk/twist.asp I love the stuff. It makes Irish Flake look lightweight.
1oz a week is nothing. I buy 50g, (nearly 2oz), Condor every 4 or 5 days. OK I smoke quite a bit but I could get it down to 50g a week easy enough. That plus 3g of snuff a day keeps me nic’d up all the time lol. Stefan
Theboggart. Where do you buy your brown flake? Is this the famous Brown Bogey?
Urh. I mean Brown Twist.
@petersuki GH Brown Irish Twist (aka Brown Irish X) is just a thicker version of Brown Bogie (aka Happy Bogie) and both are currently in stock at smokingpipes.com
I’ve just sampled another bowl of Irish Twist black. If there’s a stronger smoke than this (brown) I’m not sure I’d be conscious after it. Very fine smoke. It’s looking like one bowl as a nightcap per day. As an ex cigarette smoker there’s always that urge to take the tars down into the lungs. No temptation with this stuff, it’s all powerful in the mouth and nose. Greens of Leeds/Smoke King have a great new site with several of these sorts available. .
Petersuki, I get my Brown Irish from mysmokingshop in Preston, UK. Always a fantastic service from Simon there, and he has recently expanded the range of twist tobaccos that he offers. http://www.mysmokingshop.co.uk/index2.php?mod=category&man=211&cat=69 Brown Irish is not the same as Brown Bogie. It is a thicker diameter of rope, and to my tastebuds that changes the flavour of the smoke due to the difference in ratio of ‘filler’ to ‘wrapper’, much like a cigar! At least, that is the conclusion that was drawn on another forum I frequent. The other option is to order yourself some SG Brown Rope No. 4. People say this is identical to the Brown Irish…I’m not sure. I would say they are ALMOST identical, but I prefer the Brown Irish…of course, it could just be that in the UK the No. 4 usually comes tinned and the Brown Irish comes as bulk, which could explain the subtle difference in flavours. I think that Simon has the No. 4 in bulk too though.
The Black Irish is not as flavoursome as the the black pigtail to me. Mind you the thin pigtail was very well aged. I’m going to take a serious look at these…The closest smoking experience I’ve had to this was about half way through a robust havana, when the fragrances go and you’re just into a serious smoke. I will strive to keep this a once a day experience…
go to tobaccoreviews.com, click on “Advanced search”, under “packaging” select “bulk” and under “recommendation” select “highly recommended” to “highly recommended”, find a few that seem interesting, go to pipesandcigars.com and find the bulk section, pick up 4 oz of each (4 oz. is the perfect price break on that site). there, now you have a few blends of fine tobacco!
Peterson’s University Flake does the job for me. And some Erinmore Balkan Mixture is good for a change of pace.
artisans blend is the one I adore. Erimore balkan is really good but you cannot get it in he states. Mick McQuaid is another. Also, if you can find it Stonehaven
