So I recently purchased a pipe ( cheap corn cob long stem wooden) and a couple house blends from my local tea shop. I am real’y real’y enjoying this since I have recently started to ween myself off cigarettes with snuff. So whats your favorite pipe smoke I could real’y use some good suggestions, even tho the guys at the pipe/cigar store strongly encourage sampling all of the house blends as much as you want, I want to know a good tin to buy from a large name brand. Thank you every one in advance I know you guys will give me some good advice as usual.
I can’t really answer this question, but I’m pretty sure smoking tea won’t do the trick.
@xander lmao I’m not smoking tea thats what we call the tobacconist shop around here. I thought everybody called it that
Peterson’s Irish Flake has been my favourite pipe baccy since the second it touched my lips, but I wouldn’t recommend it for the beginner because it is strong and might knock you on your ass
@n9inchnails thats what i want high nic hit like i said trying to ween off cigs.
My favorites are Dunhill London Blend and Escudo. As you are from South Carolina I think you should be able to find GL Pease tobaccos and Cornell and Deihl as I think they are made there. GL Pease makes a nice medium English style blend called Chelsea Morning. For something lighter you might try GL Pease Piccadilly. A pretty good Vaper if you can’t find Escudo is Cornell and Deihl Bayou Morning. A big name brand Vaper besides Escudo is Peterson’s Irish Oak. Another suggestion since you are in the US is Prince Albert. It is not exceptional, but many former cigarette smokers like it. It is a mild plain Burley which has stood the test of time.
Wow, that’s a huge question. Take a look at Tobaccoreviews.com to see just how huge the range is. Pipe smoking is no longer fashionable in the UK but it was once huge and this is reflected in the range and depth of English pipe tobaccos still available. As with snuff, the Kendall producers of Samuel Gawith and Gawith Hoggarth have a lot to offer. But it will take you a long while to know whether you like the English mixtures, or straight virginia, flake, plug, etc. A tin of Dunhill mixture will show you very quickly whether you like that style, - latakia, virginia etc mix. A tin of Dunhill flake will tell you whether you like smoking more or less straight virginia flake. You might like some virgina perique mixture. You might like Burley (Kentucky). This is very UK-centric advice. Others can tell you what US tabs are available. I’ve settled on Samuel Gawiths Full Virginia Flake for several years. Just as I find they do a classic job on snuff. The quality varies, but hey, it’s a quite natural product. If you just want to be blown away by nic then try smoking some Kendall pigtail twist, or you can put a slice in your mouth. Or you can grind it/snuff it chew it and smoke it at the same time. (You’ll be twisted). At this point I promise you you will not be thinking about cigarettes. (when I was a lad and couldn’t get tobacco I smoked tea. I don’t recommend it).
I posted the above before I read Nachman’s good advice…
If you want to ween yourself off cigs than Irish Flake is a good choice. Also you might want to try SG FVF, 1792, Brown Rope and GH Kendal Kentucky, Kendal Dark, Dark Birdseye, Brown Bogie, Brown Irish X, Dark Flake. I weened my self off cigs with the pipe over a year before I started snuffing and it was these strong blends that helped me do it.
Dunhill’s “My Mixture 965” is a good blend, not overloaded with perfumy sweeteners, but a good Latakia/Virginia natural flavor.
Frog Morton, Carter Hall and McClelland Dark Navy Flake are my top 3 suggestions. Spend some time with the blends at the shop and find a basic type you like best, then you can refine your taste within that group. Once you find a few “stand bys” you can branch out and experiment with other types.
C&D Billy Budd P.S. Luxury Twist Flake S.G. Balkan Supreme
Prince albert is worth a try, I’m not sure you’ll like it’s basically just white burley with a coffee/chocolate casing, but it’s cheap and easy to smoke, carter hall is similar with less nicotine more virginia. Lane 1q is good I’m sure the shop sells it. On the tin side I’d say Irish flake and royal yacht are good in terms of nicotine and strong flavor, and I haven’t had it but G&H dark kentucky and birdseye sound good.
Solani Va/Per Two Friends English Chocolate McClelland 221b Honeydew ( let it dry out for a bit) and… every now and then Dunhill Nightcap… but not for the nic newb. It packs a wallop. Maybe on a friday or saturday night.
I appear to have double-posted, but will use the opportunity to say to Jwalker that I have some Dark Birdseye on the go at the moment. Definitely a good one if you enjoy those strong air/fire cured VA type blends! I shall buy it again. Edit: Damn…now I have deleted my first post
A brick and mortar tobacconist will steer you toward house blends because that’s what they make their biggest profit from. They’re usually not very good quality, although you may be lucky enough to find an exception or two. Prince Albert and Carter Hall, on the other hand, are good starter blends – newbie-friendly, inexpensive, and widely available. They are mostly composed of Burley tobacco, although CH has a pinch or two of Virginia. If you feel you are ready to try more premium blends, and if your tobacconist sells Cornell & Diehl blends by the ounce, try a couple ounces each of a few. They’re quality tobaccos at very reasonable prices when bought in bulk. For something smooth but with a hefty nicotine wallop, I recommend C&D Old Joe Krantz, although it may be a little strong for a newbie. It has a flavor and aroma that sings of old-school Americana. As for Virginia/Perique blends, I second the recommendation of C&D Bayou Morning. If you’re drawn to aromatics (flavored), and you like maple syrup, C&D Autumn Evening will have you dreaming of IHOP. Personally, I don’t care for Peterson’s Irish Flake (anise/licorice flavoring), but I’m a fan of their University Flake (berry flavoring). Both will definitely satisfy the most fiendish nicotine craving.
Well right now I am real’y happy with my house blends from the tea shop they are certainly not the cheapest or of bad quality. The problem is i go through about an ounce in a few days so it gets a little tiresome driving 30 miles to pick up my smoke. Also has anyone had the CAO brand pipe tobacco I real’y enjoy the flavors line of cigars, but have heard sort of not so good reviews about them online. And thank you guys for your advice, it never ceases to amaze me the friendly response I consistently receive on this forum. @nachman have you tried half and half, or captain black they seem to be the most available and cheapest at around $2.50 a ounce or $23.00 for a big tub of I don’t know how much.
I’ve tried loads of blends since I started smoking a pipe 7 years ago. My favourite though is English supermarket blend Condor Ready Rubbed. Either that or a house blend I bought from a tobacconists in Cologne, Germany. That was called Peter Heinrich’s No.135, that one is lovely. They have a website at www.pfeife.de where you can order it. It is in English too. Stefan
I highly recommend Artisans blend from ashton if you like english. 524 from vermont pipes is another good one. no 27 from mcclellands if you like virginia. And if you can find it Stonehaven from esoterica.
I have tried both, but it has been decades ago. I didn’t like either, but tastes vary so you might.
