Where does everyone who is smoking Escudo get it from? It seems to be completely unavailable in the UK, as are the Esoterica blends, despite being made in these 'ere Channel Islands. I’ve still not place my TAD order yet, I’m refining exactly what I want first. My usual instinct is to order a load of SG flakes as I adore everything SG and flakesome, but I’m going to force myself to expand my horizons a bit this time. In the meantime it’s more GH Grasmere Flake in my old Dr. Plumb Extra billiard. A real sweetheart of a pipe with gorgeous birdseye grain and excellent smoking characteristics, my Lakelands pipe for when I want to enjoy some flower power

Nightcap (for the first time) in my Pete Shamrock 86S. I think I’m in love…this is one big, thick, heavy and beautiful smoke. So tasty! The Lat factor is huge but beautifully blended and the Perique really comes through for a spicy treat in the nose and on the lips. Yumyumyum!

More Nightcap, this time actually at night! I’m smoking it in a tiny rusticated Baby Bent, a £10 basket pipe I’ve had for longer than I can remember. Yesterday I smoked The 'Cap in my '49 Pete System 314 and I’m happy to report it’s just as delicious in either pipe. I’m totally besotted with this blend. It’s just exquisite, I’ve yet to smoke anything with an equal “WOW!” factor.

Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls in my Meer-lined Dr. Plumb billiard. First time out with this tobacco and first impressions are excellent…opened the tin, rubbed out a roll, 3-stage filled it and lit up with no probs. Nice mellow VaPer with none of the odd aftertaste that Scottish Cake has. I love how classy Dunhill tobaccos are. Just a great smoke.

Sure did. Scored an old sealed 1.5 ounce tin from that auction site. Flakes were quite dry as one would expect after 55 years or so but smoked beautifully. Sweet molasses and nutty notes and cool all the way down to the heel.

Nice! I’ve actually never had it- was on my to try list, then it seemed to disappear from the market. Isn’t it a burley based blend(if I remember right)? I did kind of like thier ready-rubbed, but that’s kind of different huh?

Earlier I was really enjoying some SG Westmorland Mixture in my Pete Shamrock 86S, currently lapping up some Commonwealth Mixture in my '49 Pete System Standard 314. It’s raining and cold…to quote @pieterclaassen, “it’s Latakia weather”!

@Mr. O Yes, it’s a burley blend with a good dose of dark Kentucky and what I think is a casing of molasses. It’s really great stuff either sliced or ready rubbed, but I’d give a slight edge to the former as it has more concentrated flavor and so smooth.

Do most of you Peterson people prefer the fishtail? That’s how I have my 2 Peterson’s, it seems like the P-lip can fry the roof of your mouth a bit.

Depend on what is in the pipe. I puff like a locomotive with some tobacco. others I sip so yes the P lip thing just makes a difference but so does the shape of the bowl narrow, wide ,deep. They all play a role on the flavor and heat of the smoke.Packing and tamping also makes a world of difference. I personally prefer the fishtail,they also are easier to run the brush threw.

@Mr.O , I was of the same mind until I smoked some straight Virginia tobacco in one. The P-lip seemed to make it easier to draw with less force keeping the hot burning tobacco a little cooler. I also noticed the roof of the mouth and the tongue having different types of sensitivity and for this particular ph of tobacco my roof is less sensitive. I only have the one P-lip and will be dedicating it to straight VA’s. I’m not sure if I would get another though.

I have an old Peterson knock off with a p-lipesque bit, and it seemed to wreck the roof of my mouth a bit. On the other hand it was used for burleys and some slighly-sweet aromatics, so that may have something to do with it- but I don’t usually go for extra sugary blends which tend to burn pretty hot. Suppose I should try a p-lip with some heavy English like I usually smoke.

I’ve had the same problem with p-lips and the roof of my mouth, ditto for clays with their narrow fast smoke stream–end up with a spot of swelling, not pleasant. I also find the lumpy bit uncomfortable. Probably the way I smoke, but I prefer fishtails.

Yeah, at least I have a decent number of pipes that work nicely. Does anyone else like Kaywoodies? Someone got me started on them, and - perhaps a little surprisingly the “drinkless system” doesn’t bother me at all. Also I’ve been informed that the briar is first x-rayed before it becomes a pipe, so you know the pipe has no hidden sediment etc beneath the surface.

Dorchester in a Pete 80s…this is good stuff but I think Dunbar is nicer.

@ PieterClassen, Dorchester is less pronounce then the Dunbar like a Macintosh to a Winesap /apple to apples or VaPer to VaPer. it probably that extra Virginia that make the difference. Still a top notch tobacco at a value price. Just got a large assortments of Esoterica ,and I am working my way threw them. All tasty so far! In the pipe now And so to bed in a Pete 999.

@basement_shaman, I’m actually liking the Dorchester more and more the more I smoke it!!  Easy to light and keep going, nice, rich and sweet “tongue taste” all the way down to the bottom.  I’ve received this tobacco by accident (should have been Dunbar) but I’m going to order some more.  Very good value for money, indeed.

I wish it was foxes bankers cause that blend is freaking awesome (side not do not smoke it in a corncob, cobs are awesome but some tobaccos do not give full flavor in a pipe) but it’s going to be my chocolate flake (which is a really decent blend but far from my favorite.

and it’s going to be in my awesome churchwarden meerschaum. Got it cheap cause there are some noticable scratches on it. Love high end products because they have to be perfect. Like if I paid full price and saw the little little scratches on it I’d be pissed but at less then half price who gives a flying fox.

I just want to stuff my face in it .lots of smokiness and spice, constantly good down to the fine ash, very cool smoke.I’ll be getting more of this

Last smoke of the day, Nightcap in a Baby Bent basket pipe. @juxtaposer please tell me what I’m missing with Sam’s Flake. I really want to get into it and figure it out. How do you prep it? I rubbed it out thoroughly and dried it for 30mins. It lit and burned well, but didn’t get tasty until the last 1/4 of the bowl, the first 3/4 being hot (even when sipped), steamy and unpleasantly sour…I know the Turkish element is savoury, but this was beyond that. I was so disappointed, I’ve loved all the SGs I’ve owned so far, even (and especially) the much denigrated Westmorland Mixture. I really wanted to enjoy Sam’s Flake. Any prep tips or ideas on pipe selection/smoking technique for it would be great. It could, of course, be that my taste is out of whack-I’ve had food poisoning for the last 48hrs which I’m getting over now. Having said that, Rum Flake, Choc Flake and Nightcap tasted pretty good tonight.

@Jinder  It sound like you only smoked it once. Try it again, maybe in a different pipe. It might be the pipe that is sour. You don’t have to like it but it shouldn’t really qualify getting near a baboons butt. Prep like any other flake. In my opinion, it fits right in with the other SG flake offerings (FVF, BBF, etc).

@PieterClassen what is Blue Mountain? This morning london burley in a cob, SG Commomwealth this afternoon in a Bjarne freehand, and Irish flake tonight in a Peterson Donegal Rocky 106 straight billiard. The Peterson was my first pipe and have discovered it is great smoking flakes out of. My GBD off eBay is sensitive to burleys. Heats up way too fast. I smoke an oriental blend like Cairo in it and it’s beauty. It’s funny how different pipes can suit a particular tobacco so well. I can see why pipe collections can get so large so quick. When you find a perfect pipe for a specific blend it’s a great experience. I have 3 briars and 4 cobs and would have many more if I could.

@juxtaposer good plan, I will try a different pipe, maybe my Meer-lined Billiard, that always gives a super-neutral smoke and just lets the tobacco be what it is. I smoked it in a straight Bulldog which I haven’t picked up for a while, so you could well be right about the pipe. It’s a pipe I’ve previously smoked several Lat-forward blends in, so maybe it’s incompatibly ghosted. I also have a great saddle-stem billiard which I normally smoke straight VAs like FVF and Bright CR Flake in, maybe that would be a good choice if the Meer doesn’t work out. Thanks for your advice!

@Sly3409, Blue Mountain is a McClellands blend, pure English with just the right amount of latakia. It’s a bit pricy for me, otherwise I would have smoked it day and night.  Current exchance rate is R8.28 for $1.00 which makes Blue Mountain R107.00 for a 50g tin, excluding shipping.  I can’t/won’t pay that for a tin of tobacco, so I will have to stick to Presbyterian Blend which I buy locally for much less money.

Last night’s smoke was Mellow Virginia in my W.E. Bryant Dublin. This has got to be one of the best OTC smokes in the UK. Not complicated or boutiquey, but a fine smoke.

Currently smoking Sam’s Flake in my Meer-lined Dr. Plumb Billiard. @juxtaposer you were right, it was the pipe-SF is totally different in my Meer, delicious stuff! Thanks for encouraging me to give it a second chance.

I’ve also heard good things about (Mc/Mac?)Cranies straight red, apparently available in ribbon or flake. Anybody had it here?

Hearth and Home’s Anniversary Kake in my pipe, I think this one is mostly a red VA with a good amount of Perique. It got a four hour DGT and smoked wonderfully. This would mix well with some Turkish which is now my favorite blending tobacco.

Awesome tobacco!!!   I’m a “flake man” but I buy both of them because each is a winner in it’s own right.  If you do order from McC, get yourself some bulk First Light as well which is McClelland’s 5100 Red Cake, sold under the McCranie’s label.

SG BlackXX Rope fully rubbed out by a steel toothed herb grinder (picture a circular iron madden).Smoked in the designated Peterson 317 with a Dr Grabow Omega’s stem .The P lip just bother me and the Omega fits perfect, Very rare coincidence for any stem to fit another pipe.This is pure diesel fuel; it the first one that ever gave me niccups. It is as black as night and the coolest smoke ever. And the 317 small bowl is the best to enjoy this decadent offering .

Currently smoking the delicious Navy Flake by SG. I’ve come to the realisation today that 1792 Flake is the only tobacco I’ve met that I’ve found physically impossible to smoke. There is something in it (possibly the Tonquin) that irritates my mouth and lips in a really weird way-sort of like strong chilli but without the enjoyability factor. I lit a bowl just now and smoked about 1/3 of it before I had to stop as it was just painful. Very odd. No such probs with NF though, a lovely smoke!

Bob’s Choclate Flake. Man I actualy like this one more and more the longer I have it. At first I thought it was an o.k. smoke. Though when you hit the sweet spot with it it’s mind bendingly good. As if the added scents are just enough to make the smoke seem a little richer and creamier. Wonderfull smoke.

@pieterclassen. That was definitley an autocorrect feature on my kindle gone horribly awry. The Dunhill flake was excellent! Grousemore plug in a Dartmouth Club briar. Not sure of anything about this pipe other than it smokes well. First bowl of Grousemore. I need a couple smokes before I decide about it. I get lots of grassy sweetness out of it, I picked up more than the lakeland floral thing. I think it could use a little drying time though.

SG Sam’s Flake in my Dr. Plumb Meer-Lined Billiard. After a rocky start, this tobacco has become one of my absolute favourites. Such a tasty flake-reminds me of a strong coffee with a Hazlenut syrup shot in it. Beautiful stuff! As for the pipe, I bought it 6wks or so ago and it’s become my unequivocal #1 smoker. I love the stable, neutral characteristics of the Meer and it smokes absolutely perfectly. The only pipes I have that come close are my Thorburn Clark Bent Bulldog and my '49 Pete System Standard 314. I’m even thinking of eBaying some of the other vintage Briars I’ve restored in order to bankroll the purchase of some more Meer-Lined Plumb pipes. The range is huge, and I’d love maybe a large bent billiard and a rhodesian to go with what I have. If they smoke half as well as my current Plumb Meer I’d be in hog heaven.

How often do you have to clean out the “well” in a Pete System pipe? I suppose pretty often???

@Mr.O I clean out the well of my 314 after every smoke. I like to keep it fresh.

I’m currently smoking SG Westmorland Mixture in my Plumb Meer. I’m amazed this blend isn’t more popular. As far as light Englishes go this is right up there-better than EMP in my opinion.

I suppose, I wasn’t thinking about it like that. Typically I will run a cleaner through after a smoke, but that doesn’t require removing the stem, which a lot of people try not to do very often- especially before the pipe cools down.

How often do you have to clean out the “well” in a Pete System pipe? I suppose pretty often???

I here with some well system pipes some put a piece of cotton to absorb the moisture.This make it easy to avoid build up of tar. I mostly just clean the stem not often enough .really nasty to get a big glob of tar let loose and hit the roof of the mouth.Most aros clog pipes fast ;they burn hot and moist and it takes discipline to smoke slowly. I am just getting back to some for a change of pace

I have gotten to really like the Kaywoodie’s with the drinkless system. I didn’t think I would, but the maintainence is so easy- even mid-smoke, and I haven’t had one get too loose on me yet. A pal gave me an old Falcon, but the bowl is so very loose, I don’t know how long of a life span those have, but now I’m just a little extra cautious about any unfamiliar system pipe. I usually stick to Englishes and VA’s, so I know the bummer when I have the occasional gurgley pipe full of an aro.

Player’s Whiskey in my Italian Spigot Billiard. I’m on a camping holiday with my wife and daughter, and picked this stuff up on a whim whilst in a newsagent buying lighter fluid. I’ve gotta say, it’s delicious-burns brilliantly and is full of buttery Va goodness topped off with a creamy texture courtesy of the subtle whiskey topping. Reminded me a little of a sweeter FVF, which I never thought I’d say about an OTC. What a nice surprise!

SG Grousemoor. I’m not sure how much I like it after two bowls yesterday,  but I have been craving it all day.

Rubbed a pipeful of Stonehaven and dried it for 90 minutes. Just finished a nice long smoke of 75 minutes. I’ve learned to slow down my puffing frequency and had only minimal Dottie and a dry pipe at the end of the bowl.

Loneliness is a tough cross to bear in any circumstances, and it must be incredibly difficult when that feeling is due to the loss of the person who has shared your journey through life this far, only to be taken away from your side. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be. I know I’m not alone in thinking this, but I’m so glad you decided to return to this forum after your loss and absence thereafter-your knowledge and insight is second-to-none, and there are various tobaccos that you’ve recommended and I’ve ended up really enjoying. 3Ps is a good example, I can’t imagine not having that in my rotation nowadays…Irish Oak is next on my “to try” list as I know you’re a big fan. I hope you enjoyed the Escudo and the night wasn’t too cold and lonesome.

This afternoon squadron leader in a Bjarne freehand,hearth and home Latham Circle in a Dandy nose warmer, just packed two flakes of Cornell and Diehl Burley #2 in a Country gent a half hour ago but had to set it down. I did this at the end of the evening a couple nights ago and was able to smoke the whole bowl. This tobacco is pretty high in the Vitamin N department this early in the day I guess

GLP Cairo. Finishing up a 2 oz tin. This is good lead IMO. Smoking in a large GBD straight billiard. Just lit a bowl of Hearth and Home latham circle in a dandy pocket pipe. This is a good aromatic. Smoking this in between a couple Hefeweizen Drifted pale ales.

Thanks, Paul. I lusted after it the moment I saw it, dithered for what seemed like hours before I ordered it, fearing the whole time someone would buy it before I decided to spend the money. It is really well engineered and smokes as good as it looks.

@Mouse:  can you tell me a little about the Newminster No. 403?  I’ve heard them described as slightly aromatic, are they sweetened?  What would you compare them to?

I bought a pound bag. It was packed in March of this year and I was surprised at how well the coins held up…almost no shake at the bottom of the bag, perfect moisture level. The coins are about the size of a US quarter dollar with a center of dark Kentucky which gives the blend some backbone. There are quite a few slices of ribs incorporated in them which I don’t mind a bit though some might be put off by that (think ‘birdseye’). I find the description on this web site quite accurate–slightly aromatic–very slightly aromatic, very little smokiness from the Kentucky, not at all like the smokiness in GH Kendal Kentucky or MacB Matured VA. I would ascribe the sweetness more to the Virginia than to added sugars, in other words it doesn’t burn hot or bite although it is produced by MacBaren’s which has a reputation for blends that do. All in all a good blend, especially at the price it is selling for. It should age well.

@Mouse:  have you had MacBaren’s Stockton?  It sounds like this may finally be a bulk offering of this blend, which would make me quite happy.  I’m waiting for my supplier to get this in, and am anxious to get some on this into a pipe.

Just went looking for my tin of Stockton, but I guess I smoked it all. If memory serves it doesn’t have the dark center, or at least not as pronounced. If you are in the USA I’ll be happy to send you a sample.

To the best of my knowledge, Pipesmagazine.com is using descriptions left
over from Peter Stokkebye blends. I have read over the descriptions they
have posted on Newminster and noticed not only discrepancies in components,
but also that the list is missing one blend. Therefore, I do not believe
the information came from Villiger.

Candle jars make interesting tobacco jars and keep it fresh with easy access .Boil all the wax out before filling.

How old is that Pete, could it be real amber? I had a pipe with a real amber stem and it felt like that, very hard to grip without a softy bit, probably why you see so many broken

Peter Stokkebye’s Proper English in a Barber B-line with a Butera Meershaum “Coloring bowl” not it’s intended purpose but allows any pipe to be used as a Calabash/double chambered pipe, looks a little strange but makes for a super cool & dry smoke…

Amber would be much warmer to the touch and much lighter in weight/density, it can actually strongly resemble plastic in that way.

@snuffsniffer no assays on the sterling band other than K&P you can enlarge the picture, that is all the info I have. The woman I got it from thought the bowl was painted wood. I was quite surprised to find it is porcelain. I described it as clay before. Most clay pipes are mold poured. I can tell this was carefully crafted and kiln fired. with glaze. The stem is threaded in to the shank.
Talking clays just finish 1/4 bowl of hearth and home Ambassador’s blend in this not so small W. White glasgow clay. some day I may fill her 3/4 full.

I have aqqiired about 20 different pipes in a year but they all seem so meagerly in comparison to the pipes most people here smoke. What are the price range of some of these beauties? I like but am not in love with all of my pipes but these past days listings have me drooling. St Bruno. I am smoking corner shop/drug store brands at the moment. I ran out of snuff on holiday and bought a couple of pipes (Pipex, excellent briars) and some Clan to get me through. So, I am renewing my friendship with that cheap and cheerful trio of Clan, St Bruno and Condor at the moment. Really enjoying it too, having stopped regular piping years ago. I’ll get some decent stuff if this proves not to be one of my fads. I seem to be enjoying it more than I did years ago, maybe it’s because I’m a genuine old geezer now and where I come from every single old bloke in my town smoked a pipe.

Anyone recommend a good pipe forum?

@PieterClaasen once the feathers are taken care of it is easy. Seriously though I picked up an old Kaywoodie at the flea market and finally got it cleaned up and it is a fine smoker. I don’t know much about them but it looks to be from the 50’s or 60’s, on one side it is marked Kaywoodie Whitebriar and the other has Imported Briar 76B. Really nice for 3 bucks.

I have 3 Falcons of which one is an excellent smoker whilst the other 2 are very good. The briar used plays such an important role in any pipe.

Bob’s chocolate flake. Ironically recentily I was talking about the right pipe for the right tobacco. I smoked it in my brebbia iceberg (a gift for being a great customer years ago) and B.C.F. went from a glad I tried it to I need to keep this one around. Wow it went from a nice but unremarkable smoke to an utter incredible smoke.

@bob, yes one must just find the right combination, which pipe prefers which tobacco. So true!!!

The brebbia is the pipe for that one. It was amazing how much stuff was there that wasn’t there in the other pipes. For example it says it’s got vanillia in it and yeah it does not a lot but that makes a diffrence. That is one of the reasons I don’t take pipe reviews seriousily if the pipe isn’t at least mentioned.

It could also be a Barling. They also used to have a line of african meerschaums made on the Isle of Man. No stamp on the pipe itself, but the stem would have the barling cross logo stamped on it (although it may well have worn off over time). The same pipes were also sold under the label “Manx Meerschaum.” I believe that these were all made in the same factory, and then marketed under various name brands. If it was a Peterson, it would almost certainly have markings on the silver shank cap indicating as much.

Actually the number reads 304 and it is a red root briar This is a really well made pipe. I paid 40 for it and the eBay seller through in a few cheapie pipes for free:). They smoke nicely.

Had some 5100 in a Dandy pocket pipe this morning at the casino. Got home and my order of Habana Daydream and Patton Storm front was here. Finished the day with 3 bowls of Storm Front. A nice change up from Carter Hall as a burley.

Old Masters by McCranie’s in a Sasieni Old England apple. Earlier today I’ve opened a fresh tin of University Flake and smoked it in a Donegal Rocky 80s. I received some very nice compliments on the room note.

Basement Shaman-Is that as heavy as most balkan’s? Been meaning to try it. Anything like Penzance?

@Mr.O No but it is tasty, 75% Virginia 25% latakia doesn’t get hot and no way to get tongue bite. It doesn’t have the creamy texture of the penzance. But it does have more taste imo.The only Samuel Gawith flake I’m not impressed with is the kendall cream, seems one dimensional.

Sounds worth a shot, there are times I don’t want the heaviest smoke, but usually with the Englishes I’d go heavier, though it must be good for a Summer afternoon. Any fans of Bill Bailey’s Balkan or Old Ironsides out there?

Ann oddly satisfying mix of Penzance and Macbarren Scottish mixture in a Cheap Paykok meer. My pipes aren’t the exquisite works of art and I can’t testify too how a 300 dollar pipe smokes. But I can’t complain about my pipes in the 50 dollar range. I still like browsing this subsection and picking out pipes that I would definitley want a chance to own in the future. I’m half tempted to sell off half of my pipes and buy one now!

Be very careful about selling any of your pipes. An expensive pipe can also be a lousy smoker and then you’re going to regret getting rid of your old friends. I only smoke “middle of the road” pipes and I’m a happy chappie. :))

Bobs chocolate flake in a basket briar that’s about as standard as a pipe gets. Straight stem, good size bowl, etc. had a good smoke that didn’t take any more relighting than a ribbon cut blend would.

works for me, too, @basement_shaman, though for me it is abrasives and (!) silica (one reason goldsmiths die early). I also find cayenne pepper loosens lung congestion.

MacBaren Mature Virgina and 1792 Flake-1to1. I’am trying to stretch my 1792 until my next order. It suprises me how few mixes are listed here, considering how snuff mixes are so popular. Although, a good pipe blend is enough in itself.

Speaking of mixes after stuffing a briar with Celtic talisman I mixed half and half (burley and bright) with a cavendish house blend called black toffee and filled a cheap pipe with the cheap, store bought tobacco. The result was a nice sweet, smooth smoke.
