Wooden snuff boxes and moist snuff

Here’s some info on salad bowl finishes Re: Salad Bowl Finish ________________________________________ General Finishes makes a good salad bowl finish as well as Behlens. These two will bring up a good gloss. Pure Tung oil is food safe after it cures and takes about 30 days to cure as there are no driers in it but is one of the most beautiful for salad bowls as the finish glows from deep within the wood. Howards makes a butchers block wax that looks good and is easy to apply. And theres plain old mineral oil, probably the eaisiest but my least favorite. My favorite is the tung oil it just takes a lot more paitience to use. Goody __________________ Formerly Decoycarve Some people Plan to cross the finish line in a well preserved package. Some people cross sliding sideways leaking oil yelling Wahoo! I’m going in sideways, Ive already got a good start. http://www.goodysfolkart.com http://www.etsy.com/shop/Goodysfolkart?ref=si\_shop http://toolsforworkingwood.com/store/item/BH-SBF.XX http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/t/3/-/9/41/Food-Safe-Finishes Another option would be to occasionally hydrate the box with something like a thimble with a small moistened sponge in it, close in the box overnight. the same way you would treat a natural wood humidor. It’s all starting to sound like a lot of trouble, one last thing that would probably work best: Put your snuff in the box, take the snuff out of the box and put it in your nose (the snuff not the box) Repeat

How about sticking a little moistening packet in with the snuff?

I also keep some of my wood snuff boxes in a humidor.

both wood and tobacco are hygroscopic so they’ll either absorb or release moisture according to their environment . So if you keep your wood snuffbox hydrated it will provide moisture to the snuff when it’s needed, a real plus

Good call - I’d not considered that. I did see notes somewhere on wooden boxes developing loose lids when used to store moister snuffs. This kind of makes sense to me as the box might expand a little as it absorbs moisture - and if the lid doesn’t expand proportionately - it’s floppy time! Maybe just moistening the lid of the box would help provide a little expansion plus help keep the snuff humid *thinks* However, there is the other aspect that I don’t want to damage the wood with moisture or encourage things to start growing in it. Sealing still sounds better to me, assuming the lid is snug enough to not let the moisture evaporate to atmosphere too quickly @3_D thanks for the info on the Tung Oil

I find that wood snuff boxes when hydrated slowly don’t tend to warp and keeping them hydrated is simple. Some of the woods used have a special fragrance which can be a plus with certain snuffs.

@50ft_trad and @Juxtaposer : Moisturising the wood sounds like an idea, however with the slide boxes (e.g. Heartwood etc.) I’m not sure. If the lids on these boxes tend to jam already if you keep them in your coat pocket on a rainy day, deliberately moisturising them seems pushing your luck. If you can’t get the lid back on I guess you’ll just have to snuff some more, but not being able to open the box is an issue.

Not being able to open the box is a challenge which will not defeat me >:) Years ago (in my adolescent years) I bought a “piggy bank” to fill and bash with a hammer only (because I had never done it before) only to discover it had a plug I could pull out and retrieve my coinage. That piggy has been repainted and is still in one piece because it always yielded to my demands for cash. The first snuffbox that defies me in giving me my fix, will face the mighty wrath of the largest “universal persuader” that I can lay my hands on, and decades of pent up wanton destruction against the pig shall be unleashed upon it

Interesting question on this topic - would ebony, being so darn dense and hard, when turned and finished, draw moisture and odour like other types of wood? I’m guessing/hoping not, as I’m getting a small box made primarily of ebony.

Ghosting is minimal if not enjoyable. Similar to pipe smoking, the tobaccos that ghost more usually get their own wood and specific boxes can be designated to specific “types”.

Rehydrate applicable snuffs with a slice of lemon or Orange rind, fresh mint leaves, anything moist, really. I used to use potato peel in my RYO baccy, works just fine for me.

I prefer plastic smash boxes. They keep the snuff fresh for days and can be used with any type of snuff. Also, they’re cheap.

I think that aluminium screw-top tins are likely to be just as good, but with the added bonus of being less prone to breakage and scratching. They’re also cheap - there’s a great UK online wholesaler of glass and aluminium vessels which allows anyone to order any quantity, with very quick service and totally decent prices. Is plugging allowed? (I don’t work for them, have just bought from them a few times). In addition to the tins, pertinent to our purposes they also have a plethora of tiny vials and bottles, ideal for the car or the road. Will post the link if someone says it’s ok to do so (where are the forum rules to be found??)

@snuffski (with mod hat on) no problem. Feel free to post the link. I suspect many of us may find it useful.

Thank you, chief. Metal tins/jars: http://www.ampulla.co.uk/Shop-For-Aluminium/ALUMINIUM-JARS/c-1-168-183/ Glass bottles, vials, jars and much more besides: Shop For Glass - Glass Packaging Supplies - Ampulla Limited The thing that first drew me to this manufacturer was the fact that they have pretty much every conceivable size and shape you want, in any capacity you might want. They also have a large range of plastic too. I have found them very useful. I think that 10ml amber glass screw-top vials would be extremely good for the car or road (though beware that they do look a bit pharmaceutical, so maybe have them very clearly labeled to avoid any misunderstandings with the law).

I reckon that covers pretty well everything needed for UK snuffers! Nice find!

Thanks dude. I thought it might be of some use! Certainly some of the glass bottles/vials could be great for storing mixes longer term, as the screw lids are excellent quality, with good seals built into them (obviously the snap-shut type lids on some vials won’t be as air-tight).
