Why is snuff so hard to find?

In the south, well NC, just about every good tobacco store and any Food Lion grocery store will have a variety of scotch snuffs. However, most old timers will recall using that orally as well. I have come across two tobacco stores that had any nasal snuff that was not an American Scotch. A place in Wilmington, NC on Oleander that had poschl tap boxes, Ozana and SG Apricot. Also there is Pipes by George in Raleigh NC (an awesome pipe shop and George is really cool). Anyway George has SG Apricot tap boxes but he also has a couple bulk WOS tubs, Best SP and SM 500 and one other (a floral) I believe. However those tubs are ancient and from my experience not very fresh. Not much to do about it. I doubt he has much demand for them. However he is informed on snuff, even though he is not big into it. Frankly the man seems to know everything about tobacco there is to know. I highly recommend if you are in Raleigh checking out his shop. Ken

And incidentally I bought my first snuff there ever, George’s that is. So if it wasn’t for him I may have never discovered snuff. Ken

ordering from toque and molens directly will put you in good condition and save you money.

@basement_shaman - I agree. Stocking up is key. I think I have 5 yrs worth of it in tins. Wondering how to decant them. I got large airtight (seemingly) glass jars but it is too cumbersome.

It’s so hard to find because so few people use it. Even most tobacconists (in UK anyway) have little or none. I’d be interested to know what percentage of UK produced snuff stays here. I suspect a lot is exported. I’m still yet to find another snuffer out there in the real world.

I haven’t had much trouble finding it in the upper midwest, although the selection isn’t great anywhere I’ve been yet. In fact, i ususally have to find it on my own in the shop and inform the cashier that they do indeed sell nasal snuff after having been told that they’ve never even heard of the stuff. Luckily, the local cigar shop stocks Bernard and Samuel Gowath. The “smokes for less” type shops only stock silver dollar. My best option for variety so far has been Mr. Snuff. Placed my first order through them last week. Can’t wait for it to get here!

Your snuff will be fresh after the pyramids crumble to dust.

You Americans think you’ve got it bad … try Australia, all smokeless tobacco is illegal to sell including snuff, snus, dip etc. Our only option is mail order and massive import tax.

Yeah I am surprized that Australia is such a nanny state. I am lucky that I live in the UK and it is still easy to get hold of for now. I don’t know whether these Euro regs will eventually eat away at the snuff makers though I buy my SWS from a small tobacconist in Leith Scotland online. They refuse to ship to the US though now and I notice a lot of other shops like mysmokingshop have a similar policy now: something to do with credit card processing. That could adversely affect overseas buyers.

@matteob It might not be to do with credit cards. Have a look at the following link.

If this is a genuine article,  then it would seem that not all of the problems can be laid at the doors of credit card companies and the EEC.

p.s.

I found this internet page whilst trying to find The Pipe Shop, Edinburgh.  I was going to place an order with them.

p.p.s   I typed in      SNUFF  on the search box of the  f.d.a.  website and found a few other well known firms. mentioned.

@ArtChoo, yup sounds like the feds

The obvious answer is that snuff is not very popular anymore but why it is not so popular is another issue.

IMHO it has everything to do with having brown stains on yourself, blowing your nose, etc. A cigarette is much cleaner than that. Even dipping moist snuff is arguably cleaner than that.

I love sniffing snuff but I’m not so much surprised it fell out of fashion as I am surprised that it was ever so popular.
