Hey all … was wondering why snuff is so hard to find? I’ve called and visited many tobacco shops in my area and all I found was one shop who had Silver Dollar snuffs and the attendant was not even aware that it was there until I found it myself! The only other place I’ve seen was Mr. Snuff … but like a good american consumer I prefer instant gratification. I put in an order a few weeks ago and am waiting patiently for it to come in. There has got to be a better way though …

H

It’s easy to find - all mine is just to the left of me, <<< over there. Seriously, it’s not that easy to find in the UK either, there’s a tobacconist in Salisbury, Wiltshire that does it, another in Reading, Berkshire, one in Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex, Rennie Goth’s up in Colne, Lancashire, but so many tobacconists listed on search engines turn out to be places that sell cigs.

M

well, in the usa it’s a combination of the popularity of the internet putting b&m stores out of business and laws that prohibit mail order and large taxes in some states. The few tobacconists left stock what sells.

X

Also in the USA its pretty much unknown in the general public, and hence not very popular.

H

Yeah like Xander says in the US the only “snuff” people know of is the kind you put in your cheeks. Though people in the south may have vague memories of their grandmothers sniffing snuff or talking about it (I’ve met maybe three people who said something like that).

B

yeah I discovered snuff because my tobacconist turned me onto it. Cause he knew I loved trying new tobacco. Sadly hard to find a store like even before the internet. They sold one box of dean swift every 2 or three months. So even with a fiend like me around not much demand.

M

So it seems like Mr Snuff is really the best way, right? That and maybe networking here.for trades and such?

O

MRSNUFF is excellent to deal with and has about the best selection your likely to find anywhere.Gotten several orders from them and have nothing but good things to say. I feel your pain though. When I first started out it drove me friggin crazy how hard it was to come up with any snuff locally. Now to be honest I kinda like that its hard to find…makes me feel like Im in on a very well kept secret.

M

@outlawmobile , thats a good way to look at it, lol.

B

Because I keep it all for myself, well hidden. I have most of them and before my time comes I will have all of them. >:)

M

Mr Snuff is the best way to go for anyone living in the US. The best selection, price and service. Toque is also very good, and they have a fantastic selection of their own products, which also are excellent. Just my two cents…

H

Blame it on the free market system… So few of us use it that retailers don’t want to take up shelf space when they can stock things with more demand, faster turnaround time and a higher profit margine.

M

I guess for me, being in the southern US, its a little easier to find but to only find american scotch snuff. I was able to get my local shop to special order a box of Silver Dollar from a US distributor and I have ordered from Snusory.com which has great delivery times and customer service, and I will definitely try MrSnuff very soon. But yes, I also find it difficult to get a hold of.

M

Mr snuff certainly delievered for me, but it took nearly two weeks to get to me. I was pleased with the package just wished it was a better turn around time. Ill check snussory.com too … maybe they have better times.

T

@MadMonk The time it takes is all dependent on Customs. Some orders have been at my door in 5 days and others have taken 3 weeks. (others here have had it take even longer) So anywhere overseas you order will all depend on Customs.

B

which means order early

T

And order often

B

oh yeah and it’s easier to steal then other tobacco products because of the size of the packaging. I’ve heard that expressed too. Not even stolen by snuffers but broke cigarette smokers and random punks. Yet unlike cigs it’s hard to see what it is when it’s hiding behind a counter.

B

order more snuff than you need every time. If you use 100 grams a month then order 200 grams. This insures you won’t run out. Snuff is a luxury commodity No one needs snuff but it is nice to have.Someone commented before about members being short on funds, I felt bad because I been there, and apologized. I only made a suggestion and was nail to a cross

M

I think thats a good point, no one needs snuff and its not a bad idea tonorser more.than what.you will use so you have a reserve. That will be my rational anyhow for placing a mr snuff order tomorrow as well as buying a bit from @kaiser_wilhelm.

In the south, well NC, just about every good tobacco store and any Food Lion grocery store will have a variety of scotch snuffs. However, most old timers will recall using that orally as well. I have come across two tobacco stores that had any nasal snuff that was not an American Scotch. A place in Wilmington, NC on Oleander that had poschl tap boxes, Ozana and SG Apricot. Also there is Pipes by George in Raleigh NC (an awesome pipe shop and George is really cool). Anyway George has SG Apricot tap boxes but he also has a couple bulk WOS tubs, Best SP and SM 500 and one other (a floral) I believe. However those tubs are ancient and from my experience not very fresh. Not much to do about it. I doubt he has much demand for them. However he is informed on snuff, even though he is not big into it. Frankly the man seems to know everything about tobacco there is to know. I highly recommend if you are in Raleigh checking out his shop. Ken

D

And incidentally I bought my first snuff there ever, George’s that is. So if it wasn’t for him I may have never discovered snuff. Ken

B

ordering from toque and molens directly will put you in good condition and save you money.

N

@basement_shaman - I agree. Stocking up is key. I think I have 5 yrs worth of it in tins. Wondering how to decant them. I got large airtight (seemingly) glass jars but it is too cumbersome.

H

It’s so hard to find because so few people use it. Even most tobacconists (in UK anyway) have little or none. I’d be interested to know what percentage of UK produced snuff stays here. I suspect a lot is exported. I’m still yet to find another snuffer out there in the real world.

W

I haven’t had much trouble finding it in the upper midwest, although the selection isn’t great anywhere I’ve been yet. In fact, i ususally have to find it on my own in the shop and inform the cashier that they do indeed sell nasal snuff after having been told that they’ve never even heard of the stuff. Luckily, the local cigar shop stocks Bernard and Samuel Gowath. The “smokes for less” type shops only stock silver dollar. My best option for variety so far has been Mr. Snuff. Placed my first order through them last week. Can’t wait for it to get here!

Your snuff will be fresh after the pyramids crumble to dust.

You Americans think you’ve got it bad … try Australia, all smokeless tobacco is illegal to sell including snuff, snus, dip etc. Our only option is mail order and massive import tax.

M

Yeah I am surprized that Australia is such a nanny state. I am lucky that I live in the UK and it is still easy to get hold of for now. I don’t know whether these Euro regs will eventually eat away at the snuff makers though I buy my SWS from a small tobacconist in Leith Scotland online. They refuse to ship to the US though now and I notice a lot of other shops like mysmokingshop have a similar policy now: something to do with credit card processing. That could adversely affect overseas buyers.

A

@matteob It might not be to do with credit cards. Have a look at the following link.

https://www.fda.gov/ICECI/EnforcementActions/WarningLetters/2015/ucm429538.htm

If this is a genuine article,  then it would seem that not all of the problems can be laid at the doors of credit card companies and the EEC.

p.s.

I found this internet page whilst trying to find The Pipe Shop, Edinburgh.  I was going to place an order with them.

p.p.s   I typed in      SNUFF  on the search box of the  f.d.a.  website and found a few other well known firms. mentioned.

J

@ArtChoo, yup sounds like the feds

H

The obvious answer is that snuff is not very popular anymore but why it is not so popular is another issue.

IMHO it has everything to do with having brown stains on yourself, blowing your nose, etc. A cigarette is much cleaner than that. Even dipping moist snuff is arguably cleaner than that.

I love sniffing snuff but I’m not so much surprised it fell out of fashion as I am surprised that it was ever so popular.
