Until two years ago, I lived in the UK, and was able to buy my snuff from tobacconists. I live in the States now, and the supply that I brought with me is dwindling. Is there a supplier here in the States that sells snuff? I found Mr Snuff, but even though the prices default to USD, I noticed in the FAQ section of the website that they are not based in the States. I will order from abroad if I have to, and I know that there are many reputable suppliers that will reliably ship the stuff to me, but I’ve had enough bad experiences with overseas shipping to make me have a very strong bias towards ordering from domestic sources. If I’m out of luck on that score, has anyone got any recommendations regarding American made snuffs? I’m well versed with the UK stuff, but I know next to nothing about American types, except that people say they taste like barbecue! My two favorite types are SP and HDT, (I don’t care much for flavored snuffs, and I can’t stand menthol) so I’m wondering if there are any American snuffs that I might like?
The pact act has pretty much screwed us here in the US. if you can’t get it locally, about the only option is to order from overseas. Silly, isn’t it?
PACT prevents sale of snuff through the mail?! I thought it was just cigarettes I make my own cigarettes with filter tubes and loose tobacco (injector machine) and I have never had a problem buying tobacco online. Maybe it’s because it is sold as ‘pipe tobacco’ or something, but I bought some about three weeks ago with no problems.
PACT Mostly effects the internet sales of most types of tobacco if you look for American based online tobacco retailers there are hardly any left because of PACT. At any rate to the original poster, American Snuffs take some getting used to they are very very dry and as far as flavors go there aren’t many options, many grocery stores carry American Snuffs also if you have a local Tobacco store they might carry some types of European snuffs. I personally have never had a problem with ordering snuff from overseas via the internet. The snuff is always fresh although where I live in the U.S. it takes around 12 days for the order to get to me, but I have never had a problem.
Depending on your location in the U.S. … but you may be able to pick up some Scotches or Silver Dollar Snuff some where. You will have to call around to local tobacco shops … I order everything online … nothing worthwhile locally besides Bruton for me.
In addition to local tobacconists and grocery stores, you can also sometimes find American scotch snuffs at the discount tobacco outlet stores. But anywhere you go in the U.S., the selection of snuff tends to be limited. The only brick-and-mortar store I’ve ever been to that had a really good selection of snuff in stock was Iwan Ries & Co., in downtown Chicago.
http://www.lilbrown.com/ . Reservation online tobacco shop. Has a few different snuffs. Check under assorted items as well as dry snuff.
@greencrow +1 Its the only way to buy online in the US … the Native American Reservations. They have different regulation than the rest of the US. It allows them to mail it to you. In theory you may have certain tax obligations but I never looked into it.
I make a monthly order from mr snuff, And have never had any problems. The package usually arrives in 9 business days.
Actually, even the reservations can’t use US Postal Service any more, they use UPS I think. Its probably easier and less expensive to order from the UK. I’ve been buying and selling things online and doing overseas shipments for 13 years now. I’ve never had anything go astray. I spent my first year as a snufftaker searching local shops, after finding about a dozen scotches and nothing else, I eventually gave up and resolved that the online variety makes the local variety laughably ridiculous. One guy carried a couple Pöschls. Now he sells nothing.
Doctorbeat, we ship 100’s of tins of snuff to the USA everyday. Normal delivery is 5 - 7 days and we never have any problems.
If you can find a brick and morter tobacconist that sells quality snuff you are all set. They are few and far between. As you get into the southern states you will find American snuffs at quite a few places, but these are mostly intended to be used orally (rubbed on the gums.) Your best bet is probably Mr. Snuff. Mr. Snuff’s has an office here in New York State (way up by the Vermont and Quebec borders) but they ship their tobacco products out of their branch office in Ireland and thus avoid the Pact Act headache. (I think that’s right, isn’t it?)
