@gilly do you still live in Sheffield? I’m between Chesterfield and Alfreton. In fact I’ll be going near Sheffield (Dronfield), to watch my footy team Sheffield FC tomorrow. Stefan
Yes I do…Dronfield is on my side of town
"Anyhow I recall we had a celebrity of the day, Frank Muir to promote this as Frank was a keen snuff taker. " Gilly, I posted an article about Frank Muir a while back. Unfortunately when the site changed the pictures were lost and so the picture of Frank delving into his box is missing. Some here will remember Frank Muir, his polka-dot handkerchiefs, his gold box and his insatiable snuffing on television from ‘Call My Bluff’. The blue booklet and ‘The Manufacture of Snuff’ both end with an endorsement and picture of Mr. Muir. The former endorsement was also an advertisement for his book (The Frank Muir Book) - “… a glass of wine, a pinch or two of snuff, the Frank Muir Book … ‘tis paradise enough.” (Remember that?) All this chat about Westbrook inspired me to purchase the little blue box today for nostalgic reasons. Although no longer milled in Sheffield the taste is exactly the same as it was when I made my first purchase half-a-century ago. In those days a box costing 3 or 4 pence would last me a week. Now its all gone in less than a day. Welcome aboard and hopefully by fair means or foul we’ll extract some snuff secrets from you.
“… a glass of wine, a pinch or two of snuff, the Frank Muir Book … ‘tis paradise enough.” (Remember that?) Of course I do! I loved the very bones of Westbrook Mill, with the stone head of the Grecian God of Medicine sat atop the door of my office, it saddens me when I drive by to think what happened to us. The beauty of the building was it’s downfall in the end as the building is Grade II listed it was sold for the value of the building even though the business was viable, this was proved as it was transferred to Liverpool then (in fact I was offered a job there but didn’t want to relocate to Liverpool) How I hate Lord Hanson for this, who did he think he was doing this to all of us. The day all of the employees were brought together in the upper office to be told we were closing was a bad day, you could hear a pin drop we were all in such shock. I know it’s still made (I think Nottingham?) and I am glad they have remained true to the recipe. I still feel robbed of my old job though!
