Poorly sealed tap boxes from Mr. Snuff

I placed an order with Mr. Snuff a while back and received tapboxes of Samuel Gawith Apple and Afterglow that weren’t sealed, leading to much of the contents lining the box they came in. Now, in fairness, this could happen when you order from anyone, but what really grinds my gears is that this wasn’t something that happened in transit. The snuff was bone dry, and this would’ve been the case well before shipping. I’m trying to rehydrate the snuff presently, but I’m just wondering if this is a common experience and what remedies you may have used. Using either snuff is like inhaling sawdust.

I think tap boxes are in general prone to drying out rather quickly. The only solution is to buy tins.

The sneezeboxes from SG and GH are known snuff destroyers here on the forum, so much so that I’m always surprised when a topic like this pops up. Tapboxes only work for the oiled german snuffs, they simply desiccate and ruin the British snuffs that only use water for hydration. Even if you succeed in rehydrating the snuff it will never really resemble what it would be fresh in a 25g vac sealed tin. The best way would be to put the suff in a tupperware with a small dish (a bottlecap or somesuch) with a little water in it, put the lid on the tupperware and as the water evaporates it will be drawn into the snuff. Ultimately, the best thing to do is only order 25g tins from SG. GH 25g tubs are hit or miss with their sealing.

I bought a tap box just to have the box, the design is meant for a day on the town not shipping across the world without spilling a drop. Put enough for a day in there, refill from a well sealed container. I love tap boxes but only when used as intended.

all the tapboxes of samuel gawith i have received didnt have any plastic wrap around. I have received some that were very moist and some that were drier. I have received 3 vacumn tins with loose lids so i just opened those and started pinchin’…

Yup SG 10g box notorious for stale snuff. I been posting warnings for years here on snuffhouse. Sorry you missed the memo :(( Poschl , Bernards and Paul Gotards are OK. Contact MS CS they should make good on your loss. Take the credit you really need fresh from the 25 gram tins. I had GH plastic 25 spill all over an order once and CS took care of it. Another order I asked my GH 25 be taped so it wouldn’t spill it was taped it also was stale and flavorless. That ended my buying GH snuff. These two companies need to listen to their users concerns I sent a few e-mails to SG about the 10g boxes with no results.

Interesting topic; I didn’t know there was such a thing as a well sealed tap box, I was always under the impression that they were engineered to extract all flavor, scent and moisture from their contents, be it snuff, herbs, soil, sand or salt.  They are very effective at that particular mission.

One exception:  Jaap Bes and Molens.  Those are well made and if they arrive mill fresh and stored properly immediately on receipt they work quite well.

@chefdaniel, I forgot about Molens. Jaap’s tapboxes work pretty well. Still glad to see him switching to snuff box type containers though.

i agree with you guys, @Sandwhichisles, @chefdaniel, tap boxes are about immediate convenience not proper storage. I have both types that Molens uses and like them both. The snuffbox style is neat.
Except for White Elephant and some American Scotches, I put everything in glass. Even Bernard’s and Poschl, that originally came in tap boxes.
I have a huge box of empty tapboxes, don’t really know what to do with them…

I’ve ordered quite a few Bernards and two or three boxes of Samuel Gawith. While Samuel Gawith snuff that comes in the ten gram tap boxes is absolutely disgusting, I’ve never had any problems with spilled snuff in any of my orders from Mr. Snuff.

For tap boxes I have like three of the Rococo brand and they are very good.you can pinch or you can slide the top for tapping. They are sold on Mr Snuff for like 7.95$.it’s worth the money.also it comes in different colors.

@hawaiian_ryan, yeah love my rococo’s although I glue the slides shut to keep 'em airtight.

Thanks for all the info everyone; I’ll definitely pass on SG tapboxes going forward. @basement_shaman I’ll definitely be taking your advice. Don’t know how I missed your warnings, but for the minimal price difference, a 25g tin is the way I should’ve gone to begin with. Thankfully the Gotard Grape tapbox is a much better design. I’ll take snuffsahoy’s advice and use it when I’m out and about.

@Tobe They are probably fine if you get them at the factory. SG should consider shrink rapping these evil boxes before they leave the factory.
MS orders in bulk and has a warehouse they could sit on the shelf for years before they ship across the ocean. Members been warning of SG boxes since 2009. I am real surprised when pot lucks are offered he hasn’t unloaded them.
