Taking Snuff In Public (Office, in meetings, etc.)

my job is driving a tanker around southeast england, i occasionally have to go into prisons and recently was going to one quite regularly, anyway, one day i went there and i forgot about the two snuff,s i had in my rucksack. this day, they were doing drug searches on all vehicles entering, which they had a sniffer (snuffer) dog lol, as i stood there waiting for them to finish, all these thoughts were running through my head about the dog thinking it getting confused with the smell of snuff thinking it was drugs, it was a bit worrying, but it didnt take any notice of it, maybe it didnt smell the snuff or wasnt familiar with that smell but was i relieved when they let me in to do my job and then out i went. lol

I was at the post office yesterday waiting in a long queue and absentmindedly took out a box of SG Irish D light (which is very light tan) and snuffed some off the back of my hand. everyone around me took several steps away from me like I had some sort of disease

I get some odd looks snuffing between frames bowling, much moreso when using a wooden snuffbox. It’s for the best–some pretty foul-smelling stuff gets on the fingertips when bowling, so I prefer a back-of-the-hand portion rather than a pinch.

At first, I was paranoid at work. First, I was using bullets, and when I dumped those, I started with smash then snuff boxes, now production tins. I still try to be relatively unobtrusive, but people know I’m doing ‘something.’ I feel a bit guilty about making ‘inappropriate’ noises. Instead of my little army of before, I only take one or two, a user rather than a sampler. I’m routine; so I’ve pinched (unintentionally) with the big boss standing behind me. Since my pinches are bigger now, frequency is less. I’m somewhat open about it, but try not to put it in anybody’s face, if that makes sense. I still think (feigned) discretion is the better part of valor.

Not much attention in any European countries I’ve been to lately. If people are curious, I offer them a pinch and quite many accept and then ask where to get this stuff. Formal situations trying to be more discreet, portion snus is handy then.

I snuff at work all the time; my immediate coworkers/supervisors know it and have no issue. However, when in a meeting with our client or upper management I just lip a snus before heading in. Stealth tobacco!

@ James. S“I just lip a snus before heading in” Yep, that’s the way  it’s still my preferred method but, cash doesn’t allow it at the moment.

When I was working in the field installing fire sprinklers, many places were tobacco-free, especially hospitals! We always had at least on bucket of black sprinkler water from pulling heads and catching water which came in handy as my cuspidor or if it got bad, when you go up above the ceiling to pull in some pipe, get a healthy snuff while you’re up there. Where there is a will, there is always at least one way, hahah!

With my previous job at a huge mindless corporation, any time I was required to fly in for meetings I was NEVER without a pris in my lip, ducking out of meetings from time to time for a snuff in the washroom. With my current job in sales, I am also afforded the luxury of either, whenever. In public, I’ve never hesitated to put in a pris, or have a snuff, and as I have mentioned here before, I even shared one with a TSA agent going through security at the airport. I’d point out that many of these places I’d have been frowned upon or worse for lighting up a smoke. Our habits are by nature more acceptable than smoking, so I think we shouldn’t hesistate to take advantage of that.

When I first became interested in snuff I did it ‘secretly’ at my desk, in the comfort of my own home- but when it came to having a pinch while I was out and about, I was strangely nervous about doing it in front of a colleague! Eventually I just up and did it… And my colleague became so interested that he is now an occasional snuffer himself, and we now share snuff! I think the addition of a nice snuffbox and silk kerchief would really improve the appearance of publicly taking snuff, as brown smeared tissues are unseemly, as well as a brown smeared nose and dripping snotty goo… Tins with ‘THIS PRODUCT CAN DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH’ aren’t the most appealing of things, either, as they alert any passerby that you’re doing ‘bad stuff’. I think the snuffbox is a little more classy and less ‘what is that guy sniffing out of that suspicious aluminum can/nosepipe’. Nowdays when push comes to shove, I just open the damn tin and take a big pinch, (using a bullet in public seems to get an even worse reaction, as most assume they’re for cocaine) to the confusion and raised eyebrows of mostly anyone who notices. I take several tins around with me throughout the day, ‘just in case’, and while I look forward to kerchiefs and a box, I’ve come to the conclusion that I DON’T CARE if other people look at me funny anymore! Edit: I just added some water to the Swiss Chocolate, and now it looks EXACTLY like smashed up cake. I wonder if, with a snuff like this, an individual could get away with insisting to curious onlookers that they are in fact sniffing CAKE CRUMBS!!

I was actually at college the other day and I passed a tin of Toque Toffee to a fellow student to have a try. Now, I’ve taken the odd pinch in class before and even had a conversation with a teacher about it whilst having a pinch, that would set the precendent wouldn’t it? Oh no. That same teacher yesterday flew off the handle into a full on outrage at me and commented ‘I allowed you to do it before Christmas, because it was Christmas’. I was then called before one of the senior members of staff to have a chat. I am now banned from taking any snuff whilst at college, yet when I was in work it was fine, in public it is fine, infact I have never had any problems until yesterday. What really ‘got up my nose’ (thought you might like that one) was that the teacher that had the full on outrage, made personal comments about me and using it. Saying that I was a rebel and acting out. Now I’m a 20 year old ex regular soldier that is serving with the reserves, last thing I plan on doing is ‘acting out and trying to be a rebel’ at a college where the majority of people are 3 to 4 years younger than me… I think something bad must had happened to her over Christmas, as she was pleasent before hand but a real she devil. Edit: Forgot to mention that both members of staff commentted on how it was akin to ‘smoking and taking drugs’ (as in narcotics).

Unless they have an actual legal document in their rules that specifically state zero tobacco use of any type, they can’t do that. If they do, then you should have kept it in secret. Of course you could be 500 lbs diabetic and eat HoHos all day long.

@Tom502 Well, smokers walk around the campus all day puffing away, whilst non-smokers have to breath in the horrible fumes (I’m a non-smoker). There is a contract you are required to sign to attend there which states you are not allowed to take alcohol or drugs onto the campus but that is about it. I mean, ok fair enough if they don’t want me to do it in class, ask. However this teacher, as well as the senior member of staff had a fit! I explained to the senior member of staff that my taking it or offering it to a fellow student was in no way ment as a disruption to the class (There wasn’t any teaching going on, we were simply revising of our own accord) nor was done with any disrespect to the teacher in question and in fact I have never encountered any problems in a work place, or in public. The college is just very arsey as well as abit totalitarian in nature. One poor chap was kicked off a course because he bought down the classes average grade. Still, I’ll just snuff away in the breaks and if they say anything, sod them!

@Snuffin: The instructor accusing you of ‘trying to be a rebel’ was just trying to humiliate you and make you feel insecure by painting you as an immature little kid. (Sounds like SHE’S the one who needs her diaper changed.) I don’t see how discreetly taking snuff is disruptive, no one knows what the hell it is half the time anyway, shame on her for having a tantrum. However, I can see how they would not like snuff in the classroom, as while one person such as yourself may be inclined to take it discreetly, if it’s okay for you, it would need to be okay for others, and that spawns the nightmare of people who WOULD take it disruptively, noisily snorting, being obnoxious, wiping boogers everywhere, et cetera. And that would be… Horrible. Have fun snuffing on your break, and if you must use tobacco in class, snus is pretty hard to detect!

Kiestraak Oh yeah, I’m totally fine with not snuffing in class if only she had just asked nicely. I don’t mind not doing it anywhere if asked, however if I’m attack as in the way I was, it gets my back up. I don’t believe Snus isn’t actually legal in the UK. I think it was banned back in the 90’s and to be honest, doesn’t really appeal to me. Still, such as life. Just have to deal with it.

No, it’s legal to have and use, and you can receive snus via post. It’s just illegal for a store based in the UK to sell. Doesn’t really matter though, as you’re not interested.

@Shikitohno Huh, how about that? I read that it was illegal in most of the EU due to the carcogenic (spelling?) qualities. Anyway, as you said I’m not interested so it doesn’t really matter.

It’s not carcogenic. Been tested to death. I suspect the big cigarette companies are keeping it out.

Yes, snus, from what I understand, is much less carcinogenic than the usual dip or cigarettes, I think due to being steam processed as opposed to fire cured… Speaking of which, why *IS* snus banned in certain European countries? Is it something like the trade embargo the U.S. has with Cuba, thus banning cuban cigars, or what? Insight is appreciated!

The only reason I can think of, is the market monopoly of the big cigarette companies, that don’t want the competition. There is an effort to lift the ban. Of course the anti-tobacco fanatics don’t want it available.
