Basically I don’t. I have a private office but we are generally expected to keep our doors open unless we have a meeting. Even then I have windows around the door anyway. So far my snuffing has been limited to before and after work and, of course, the weekends.

What do you do? I’m terrified with the thought of nasal drip or worse at work as it could, as with most office jobs, affect my career. I’ve thought already of ‘sneaking’ in a bullet but then there is still the nasal drip etc…

Am I missing any good ideas out there?

C

I share an office with three others and I am constantly shoving snuff up my nose. We’ve all known each other for about 20 years so they are used to my eccentricities, guess I’m lucky that way. Occasionally somebody from another department will wander into our office but I’ve never had any problems. I keep a box of tissues and a handkerchief at the ready at all times.

H

The biggest trouble that I have ever encountered is snuff dribbling onto the front of my shirt.

The solution was a simple one, I now only wear black.

Drip? That’s what bandanas are for!

What sort of a company do you work for that you are so worried about social reactions?

My suggestion is to be perfectly open about it.

Maybe even keep a snuffbox on you desk to introduce visitors to your discovery.

J

similar to @crullers, I share a shop with a few other guys. One is a cigar smoker and newly made snuffer ( thanks to Havana Toast ), since our doors are locked- i snuff all day long. I think if I were out in the front office, I would have to be way more sneaky about it. I suppose there may not be a good way to do it in a white collar environment. Especially since most people have no idea what the hell we’re doing.

1

I work in the pharmaceutical industry and it is a very competitive, stuffy and discriminating environment. The pay is good so I put up with the culture. They look for reasons to get rid of people as there are hundreds trying to get your position at any given time. A snuffbox on the desk would be a ticket for being fired or demoted around here.

H

“Since most people have no idea what the hell we’re doing”, my primary objective has always been to educate the aforesaid ‘people’.

Then again, I am not in a position where I have to worry about corporate image.

C

@1holegrouper, in that case I would consider using snus during work hours. Much more discreet.

C

I have had the urge for a pinch or so at work. And I did get a comment about a “nose bleed” starting. I said it was the dry air and cleaned the fichtennadel away from my nose in the bathroom. I found F&T HDT the best for the very occasional work snuff. It doesn’t give me a drip often, and if it does it’s so light in colour most people do not notice

1

F&T HDT is great stuff (and will probably become the only non-Old Mill snuff I will eventually use on a regular basis. I have not found an OM snuff I didn’t like.) I think I will occasionally have some snuff at lunchtime and use something like snus for the in between times if needed.

M

A snus-snuff combo is a great answer. That’s what I do when I can’t snuff. Heck, I snus and snuff at the same time…

S

I save oral tobacco for the end of the day to let the nostrils clear out in the last hour before bed, snuff all day long though. My work policy defines tobacco products and dry snuff is not included so I just keep it clean and discreet since that’s most likely an oversight.

B

I been using snuff for a few 24 hours. .I openly snuff everywhere I do it naturally  . I do see your dilemma. There are plenty of kiss ups that wouldn’t hesitate to screw your world. I would keep it on the down low; They don’t want to hear it’s just tobacco when snuffing has the stigma of drug use attached to it. Better safe than sorry.

S

I’ve never hidden it at work or anywhere else.  It’s legal, I’m an American, if anypony doesn’t like it they may go somewhere they find less-than-accommodating and eat something they will find less-than-palatable.  I will tell them so in no uncertain terms, too.  I’ll be hornswoggled if I served four years to come home and bow to a bunch of excrement-feasting Nazicommie scum.
But I’ve never particularly cared for material things generally; not enough to warrant selling myself to the rat race.  I tried it in the 'nineties, didn’t care for it, and unceremoniously departed.
It’s like Dean Martin said, the problem with the rat race is that even if you win, you’re still a rat.

F

I’ve got a selection of snuffs at work which are on open display, and anyone who fancies a toot can help themselves. Mind you it’s not an office and we never interact with ‘outsiders’ - it’s a dirty, heavy laser cutting place full of rough types!

S

I think the real question is how the hell do you get through a work day without nicotine?  :))

S

There’s always the time-honored strategy of snuffing whilst you are on The Throne…if your nose begins to run you could ply a dark handkerchief. Then they’ll say “that pony’s got class and uses a handkerchief instead of paper tissues! Who can compete with that?” At least that’s what I’d like to think

Update. I have learned that certain types of snuff make it easier to use when a high degree discretion is required. While I love toasts I find that a more medium grind and more moist snuff is easier to use quickly and cleanly at this point in my skill level. I have been able to use snuffs like Toque Quit and Viking Blonde a few times at my desk quickly and cleanly. I also have a mirror on my desk. So, so far so good.

J

Yes, I have 2 full time jobs, neither allow tobacco use during work hours. My go to is Viking Dark. I slip away to the restroom and take it occasionally. It gives me no drip and I can usually take it 3 or 4 times before it becomes an issue. So I take what I need then back to work make sure when on break I go back into the restroom and blow it out so I can use it again when needed without issues. The med. grind and moist snuffs are best for me too. Find what you can use without drip and use it at work. Use what you want when you are away.

M

J_S said: “So I take what I need then back to work make sure when on break I go back into the restroom and blow it out so I can use it again when needed without issues.”

Oh, that sounds nasty!

I miss the old “out of context” thread.

S

786 @1holegrouper, that’s awesome news.  Rock on!

P

I work in a local DIY store and always have a selection of snuffs in my locker, I daily carry two around with me at any one time and have gotten a couple of members of staff in to it now too.

We usually hide away in the dark recesses of “Goods Inwards” and have a wee snorting party for a few minutes, around 4-5 times a day.  The menthol and/or fruity ones have gone down well.

Most NZers I’ve come across have heard of it but never seen or known anyone that does it, until I came along.

S

I currently do the grunt work (most of the work) for nurses in a long term care facility.  I don’t often have time to take snuff in hiding, but when I do, I prefer the strongest scented snuff.  I wish it would be acceptable to use snuff freely - I know I could recruit some females to the snuff world.

1

I now snuff pretty much regularly at the office. Thank you all for you input. I was ‘busted’ once by a co-worker who caught me putting O&G on my back of hand of which too much came out and made a mess. She asked, “WTF is that?” I told her and she didn’t seem to care. LOL However, she is a very dedicated smoker.

S

I’m the receiving manager at the regional distribution center for a large box store. I snuff at my desk and on the docks with no issues. My boss is of the opinion that as long as I’m not taking a bunch of smoke breaks or leaving spit bottles around the office then everything is fine. Of course he might be mor lenient because we’re both pipe smokers also.

S

I work in IT so I’m at my cubical a lot.  I am very open about my snuffing so people don’t get the wrong impression.  From my experience Americans are completely oblivious to nasal tobacco, but so far, no one hassles me about it.

However, somewhat comically, the various Indian contractors we have tease me for snuffing like their Grandfathers do/did!  Their eyes grow wide when I start waxing poetic regarding the Indian brands.  Haha

N

I’m rather open about it around my immediate supervisors and co-workers. Within the first couple of days snuffing at work I had to clarify to my manager that i was not carrying a hanky and blowing my nose because i was sick, ensuring her i was ok to work. I took the time to show her my tap box of elmo’s reserve, She had a few questions but was more interested in my 3d printed tap box. I snuff on break near my co-workers a few of them ask questions, some have tried it. Just a few days ago i ran into a co-worker i hadn’t talked to before. Right away when he saw me take a pinch from a WoS Tom Buck tin he asked to try it. I ended up giving him the remainder of the tin.

J

@1holegrouper, regarding a tip for avoiding nasal drip and other minor embarrassments, consider one of the White Indian snuffs. They don’t cause much drip and the color is not too far from skin colour, if you are fairly light skinned. They are also quite strong, which helps if you feel you can’t take frequent pinches.

I’m all for the snuff and be damned approach in theory, but in practice I do sometimes choose not to snuff in front of other people, as a matter of discretion.

1

@Jakartaboy What type do you recommend? Also, that’s one of the things I love about Lundy Foot is that it is not overly dark and stays pretty dry in my nose

J

@1holegrouper, try 41 Photo White Elephant or Dholakia White, or 6 Photo Cheeta for a slightly perfumed version. People debate the difference between the first two, but I’ve found the variations between batches of either are at least as great as the variations between the brands.

They aren’t really white, more a light tan.

U

Buy a handkerchief…worked for me

J

@Ubert, yes I agree! handkerchiefs are awesome and feel very nice on the nose. I usually use kleenex to blow out, but swiping snuff off of the nose, it’s hard to beat soft cloth

H

If you are in a white collar job and wear a tie, I would suggest finding something that you can use as a bib to avoid dribbles on a shirt and tie.

1

@Ubert  I never go anywhere without a hankerchief!, lol. I also have a box of Puffs plus Lotion kleenex usually around.

C

Would you guys agree Americans are soo much more easily offended by and agsinst not only snuff but all tobacco usage in general? Im an accountant and i feel like a criminal when i go out to smoke. Sometimes i feel like i spend a lot of time planning and hiding my tobacco usage(snuff and snus) at work that its almost unenjoyable. I sit at a desk almost all day and sometimed go all day without talking to anyone(except myself…jk) and still feel paranoid. Is that normal.do you guys in europe or elsewhere feel like that too? My wife is filipino and when we go to the philippines any type of tobacco usage is fine…almost anywhere except in hospital and church.its irritating to live in the US sometimes. The other day for example i was having a smoke OUTSIDE and my neighbor asked me to “go somewhere else”. Where am i supposed to go? To space in a rocket ship? I can only imagine how my fellow contemporaries would feel if they saw me taking snuff. Im certain id have police take me away…ug…sorry for the rant.

M

I live in Europe and i’m afraid it’s no different here. In Germany there was a lawsuit because a guy smoked in his rental house and his nabours on the same hallway complained. This guy lost in court and had to go and live somewhere else. This example will be used in the future to forbid smoking in rental houses.

Lucky me we live in Holland and have a bought house.

It’s the same with going for a smoke you feel almost like a criminel. With snuff it’s even more extreem than they take you for a drug addict.

S

Washington state is odd.  We have no smoking indoors, non-smoking parks, non-smoking city blocks, and this applies to vaping too.  And yet, the pervasive smell of weed smoke is everywhere!  haha

Once on the Eastside I was smoking a cigarette about 100 yards away from a pinball bar, no one else around.  A red-in-the-face, absolutely LIVID lady zoomed up to me in her Mercedes wagon and started shouting at me that kids were nearby and could see me and how awful I was and that I would burn in hell (yes seriously) for hurting these children.  She was within inches of running me over, speeeeeeding through the parking lot just to yell at me… and I have no clue what kids she was talking about.

C

@SHbickel…no-one has tried to run me over yet,but probably will happen. Just people in my area like to burn holes in you with their stares, head shaking, and comments…even at the store when i buy it…the other day i was buying a pack of smokes and i heard snickering behind me.

C

@lunecat…im afraid id certainly be dismissed from my job if i kept a snuffbox on my desk. Just people in the states are so weird and sensitive about everything…some people are like that everywhere, but, for example, i was on holiday in the UK in the early 90s,people smoked everywhere, some folks in the pubs were using snuff and thats actually where i picked up the snuff habit…im certain some people didnt like it but it seems like there was more tolerance there.i dont want to endorse tobacco use but if i took out a can of snuff in a pub here in the US, for sure, id be tossed out…or someone would ask me if i had “anything for sale” or if i could “hook them up”.ug.

C

@Marielle32 sorry to hear its like that in your part of the world also. Guess i didnt expect such a global similarity…Again, i dont wish to damage other peoples health. I take it no open snuff usage at the office for you either? Thanks for the insights everyone!

M

@Chicago_CA no. no open snuff usage al though they are used to my strange hobby of pipe smoking i don’t dare to push it… So my toilet visites are snuff moments now.

C

Ah yes, im in there doing the same thing…starting to wonder though if my co-workers think something is wrong cuz of the frequency…maybe nobody is counting and paranoia is just getting the best of me!

M

Weel, it seems I am quite lucky here in Czech Republic (and some other European countries). As I work in the academia and research, the people here are rather open minded, so no one cares about me taking snuff in the office, some of my colleagues even partake from time to time, some of them makes fun of me but fortunately no one makes any hostile comments or action against me.

P

Im a nurse and I work in a hospital. My hospital has an anti tobacco stance on the campus. I can sneak in a few here and there when Im away from the cameras and others just to be safe. I’m thinking about getting a bullet so it looks like those nasal sprays for allergies and no one will say a word. Just depends on your workplace and the policies. Id rather be safe than sorry.

5

I use my snuff discretely, and tend not to take a pinch in sight of others. About a month or so ago, I went out for a few drinks with friends, and a couple of us went outside for a smoke. Can’t remember how the topic came up, but I mentioned to them that I now use snuff, not even expecting them to be that familiar with it. One of them just cracked up laughing and said “SNUFF! Tobacco you can take at your desk! I like your style!”.

M

Tobacco use is illegal where I work. Luckily, I have my own space, and a camera so I can see who is coming in the door. I use my bullet for discretion. I also have my General snus for when I have to be around others for extended periods of time.

Outside of work, I snuff whenever I feel like it. My daughter recently told me people have asked her “is your Dad taking drugs!?”. She is glad to explain my obscure habit.

F

It amuses me how snuffing is regarded in some places. Here in South Yorks UK (which was once huge in coal mining) everyone was snuffing not too long ago. Hell, even my grandmother used to get thru’ 2 tins of Top Mill a day. Even now I can walk the supermarket aisles snuffing openly to my heart’s content and no-one bats an eyelid.

M

@fj1988 that’s very nice ! I’m jealous !

C

So ive become much more relaxed about my snuff usage at the office. Im not as paranoid; im not breaking any laws or company regulations. Its a matter of becoming comfortable in my own skin with regards to snuff. Im still not taking a pinch in the middle of a staff meeting, but im not hyper paranoid about it anymore. Noone has called me out yet, and i suspect if they did, id point to the Employee Handbook which only forbids smoking in the office and says nothing about smokeless tobacco use, let alone snuff. So i suspect id slip through the clutching hands of administrative disciplinary action anyway. Im still not going to push it to far, but the workday is massively more enjoyable when im pinching!

C

Perhaps id point out to my supervisor that its actually benefiting the company because im more productive, take less trips outside, and generally more pleasant and engaging when im taking snuff. Maybe i should include this on my next business expense reimbursement under the “Misc. Other Necessary Expenditures” section. ; )

H

I’ve gotten some looks while driving. At work I showed my managers ahead of time since they would see me on the cameras. They think I’m odd, but I work with some good people that really don’t mind what I do so long as my work is done. Which it always is, usually with a jump on the next day’s as well.

Around here, if I’m smoking my pipe or taking some snuff outside my work on break… People mostly go out of their way to avoid looking at me and pretend like they don’t see me at all, choosing to walk the long way to the front door instead of by me. I suppose I prefer being treated like I’m carrying some infectious disease rather than being pestered. It provides some amusement.

We always have police using our lot to watch the traffic on the highway, one of these days they’ll see me out there, and I’m sure they’ll have some questions, but most of them know me anyway. Just from seeing them in stores or coffee shops around town, I like to say hey and ask how their day is going.

A few days ago I was doing some paperwork at a cafe, tin of Almond Toast on the table. Everyone else left shortly there-after. *shrugs* An employee casually walked by to clean the table behind me, I saw them look and read the lid, they kind of nodded and made an “oh, okay” sort of face and went on with their day.

I’m still getting comfortable with openly snuffing myself.

@Chicago_CA I was just thinking about how many less smoke breaks I take at work on my ride home! Haha I enjoyed your posts. Luckily I have lots of smokers around town, so people don’t usually react as poorly, but there are some serious drug problems around, wouldn’t be too surprised if someone wound up asking where to get some. I’d probably say, “here, take a pinch, free sample” and have a good laugh when they take it to the back of their head.

J

I have all kinds on snuff and snuff flasks on my book shelf at the office.  People have noticed the items (and the black spot I missed on my nose) and ask about it, but I don’t get any flack.  Just tell them you’re trying to quit smoking and you’ll instantly go from “weirdo” to “brave hero”…as long as you don’t get snuff everywhere.  I probably have 5g in dust under my chair…and 1g in my shirt.

C

Under my chair isnt a problem, the janitors clean that up daily. It’s my keyboard: i turned it upside down today and gave it a whack on the back and surpised how much fell off of it.

M

I work as a dishwasher. My coworkers know about my snuff use when I started mentioning some about powdered tobacco and they are fine with me doing it. Just my boss and his wife don’t know anything at all about snuff and doesn’t approve at all. Recently he threw my tin away because he didn’t know what it was and as a result, I was told that he doesn’t like it.

Thankfully in a demanding job like dishwashing, I just use white elephant and everything is okay!

F

I work in a machine shop operating CNC machines so it’s pretty blue collar and laid back. I usually keep 5 or 6 tins out in the open by my machine and I don’t catch any flack at all. I do get a lot of questions and I’ve offered several people a pinch. I haven’t had any takers and the the worst comment I’ve gotten is, “That’s the craziest crap I’ve ever seen!” When I demonstrated how to use it. @mrsniffles I spent four years as a line cook and a dishwasher so I feel your pain! You’re one hardworking son of a gun!!

S

My company recently changed their policy, in an attempt to allow people to breathe freely (of presumably fresh untainted air) they have banned all nicotine products not lobbied for by big pharma. They even specifically mentioned nasal snuff and snus, all under the umbrella of not wanting people to be subjected to cigarette smoke. Unbelievable. In other news bullets become life savers…

J

@snuffsahoy  What on Earth would possess them to throw “nasal snuff” in there?  Unless you live in an area with a lot of snuffers, I’d say that this was aimed at your personally.  What a ridiculous policy.

S

@snuffsahoy Yeah, my work added nasal snuff to our policy this year too.  :(( I thought it might have been due to my openness about snuffing in the office, but I’d guess HR documentation is pulled from some trove rather than written in house.  Either way… LAME!
