Menthol can have a rebound effect with me, but I can’t recall any others which do this. In truth, I’m not really a fan of menthol snuffs anyway, although I do like to have some “in stock” just in case
It’s strange with me. O&G and Jip cause me congestion but if I get up and walk around to another room or outside my nose clears. Must be air pressure and temperature I think. Any clues?
I can’t use any oiled snuff. Sneezy after one pinch, and completely clogged after two. Pain after 3. I have no problem with O&G or L260, but I don’t use them all day, usually just a pinch or two in the morning. I used to be able to take Wilsons IHT22, as well as other toasts, but more recently, they make me sneeze and/or clog me up, too. But US scotches don’t give me the same trouble. I say experiment and try all types. I can pinch all day without issues, given the right stuff.
There is one of the Bernard schmalzlers that clogs me up pretty good. I can’t remember which but it sets in very quickly and then lingers. Not fun…
For me, menthols consistently (still use occasionally though) and periodically the schmalzers are also culprits…
Can one become addicted/dependent on menthol? Say if someone used Red Bull as an all day snuff and they find that when they stop using it, they are clogged up nearly all the time. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is this a possibility?
I do not intend to be harsh, and I mean no disrespect to anyone but… if all the menthol snuffs disappeared from the face of the earth, I would not miss them. Please do not misunderstand. I do not WANT them to go away as I know that there are very many of us who like them. I am only speaking for myself. I would not miss them as I can think of nothing they do for me other than irritate and plug up my nose. The only menthol snuff that I like is the one in which the menthol is completely or nearly completely hidden. It is my opinion, and only my opinion, that I have encountered a good number of fine snuffs that have been ruined by menthol. Okay, I will shut up now.
I have been strictly using viking brown and o&g lately and am now completely congested in the right nostril for whatever reason. Does anybody know why the nose behaves this way to menthol or certain snuffs? And what’s up with only one side being congested? Anybody else get that?
The thing about mainly mentholated snuffs like O&G or L260, etc. are that they indeed initially open my sinuses up very well but after a time they end up tighter or even seem closed. More lightly mentholated snuffs are hit and miss for me. HDT/IHT very dry toasts seem to help open things up but many times I have to just rest and let time heal the snufiffication. The prob is that I absolutely love mentholated snuffs thus repeating the insanity over and over, lol
I never kept track, but I always have my trusty 6 Photo Special to come to my rescue when it happens. I use it first snuff and last snuff daily for the purpose of opening up the air ways and it has not failed once. I should make a list because I have a good forgetter.
@fredh, have you tried some of the Indian menthols and Abraxas Dragun Menthol? I thought I couldn’t stand menthol, until I realized I quite liked it – but most mentholated snuffs use way too much of the stuff.
PS. @basement_shaman, great Salinger quote!
The only snuff that really clogs me up is Fubar Bohica. First, I get a runny nose which completely clogs up within minutes.

Howdy @JakartaBoy. I hope you are well and happy these days.
Funny you should mention it but Abraxas Dragun Menthol is exactly the snuff I had in mind in my post above where I said, “The only menthol snuff that I like is the one in which the menthol is completely or nearly completely hidden.”
In other words I agree with you on Dragun Menthol. And of course, we all know that Nigel @abraxas is a true master snuff maker.
However, every other snuff I have ever tried has left me wondering what it would have been like if it had not been f*ed up by menthol. Sorry but it’s just me but that’s my take on menthol for what it’s worth.
Having said all that, my distaste for menthol does not include those @chefdaniel’s snuffs which include a bit of mint. That is another story entirely.
“The only snuff that really clogs me up is Fubar Bohica. First, I get a runny nose which completely clogs up within minutes.”
@Jernej FUBAR Bohica is a crime against humanity.
I should add that I am a big fan of many, many Dholakia snuffs, but the guy who made Bohica was either steeped in evil or filled a special order placed by Satan himself–or perhaps the Hindu goddess Kali, who, according to her reputation, takes great delight in causing the misery and suffering of human beings.
@fredh, fine, thanks! I was also thinking of the menthol version of Dholakia Sparrow and one or two other Indian snuffs. They also seem to use it very lightly, although it’s perhaps a bit more present than with Dragun Menthol.
Perhaps this has already been mentioned; But, I find that some snuffs cause congestion sometimes but not always and vice versa. I’m not sure what environmental factors influence this but I have noticed that the heavily mentholated snuffs usually trigger congestion- but not always.
Find a snuff that make your nose run and mix it with one that congests , which one will win? >:)
