Menthol lovers

M

I love mentholated snuffs like Hedges, Zwiefacher and JIP, but using them more than once in a blue moon created rebound nasal congestion for me. I’m just curious if there are ANY regular menthol users who don’t get stuffed up when they forego their mentholated snuff.

C

i get a bit of rebound congestion, but i have messed up sinuses and a deviated septum so ive had congestion all my life. I usually just put a dab of snuff on the end of my finger and wipe the inside of my nostril, wait a bit then when my nose clears up enough, take a big bump. Usually works for me.

J

Not me, however I have a remedy that really helps with counteracting the rebound effect… American Scotch snuff.

C

Or i can just dip into my sneezy batch of homemade and it clears everything right out!

C

@Juxtaposer maybe a stupid question, but are there any medicated American Scotches?

J

No mentholated American snuffs are produced that I know of but Checkerberry may be considered as medicated with its wintergreen.

100% agree with juxtaposer here - fine dry snuffs beat any menthol hands down in being good for congestion - and no rebound. Lightly mentholated dry snuffs are good but there are very few made.

@Abraxas I agree, I’ll use a small pinch of Navy Plain before bed, specifically to dry my sinuses. Menthol opens the passages, but make my nose run quite a bit. Maybe a combo would be good. A sniff of menthol, followed by sniff of a scotch. I’ll try that just because it sounds good.

I learned something new. May be helpful if I get congested.

B

I have yet been clogged up by Indian snuff. The english ones that clog I just don’t employ

There are lots of regular users of O&G, Hedges and other mentholated snuffs. I appreciate that there are some non-mentholated snuffs that clear the sinuses. I know there’s a spectrum, with some experiencing only mild congestion and others (like myself) getting very congested quite soon after using a mentholated snuff, but I’m curious to know if any of those regular menthol snuffers use mentholated snuffs and do NOT have a problem with recurring congestion–mild or severe–when they go without snuff. Incidentally, my congestion after receving my lovely new tin of Hedges was quite severe, but after foregoing the menthols for a couple of days (and using breathe-right strips at night) I seem to be back to normal. I agree with @basement_shaman re the Indian snuff I have–it’s metholated but doesn’t cause rebound like the Hedges and JIP I have.

S

No rebound here.

T

It depends on what mentholated snuff I’m taking. Gletscher Prise congests me if I take a big bump, Gawith Cola, Ozona President and Ozona raspberry do not, even if I sniff them all day. Gawith Apricot doesn’t congest me either but my throat gets sore from breathing in the menthol hit. Weird. 6 photo medicateds clear me out. I wonder why different menthols are different like that for me.

Toque Peppermint was good for me. My allergies and sinus problems are probably as bad as anyone’s. The fine dry snuffs do dry me out which is a nice feeling. Toque Peppermint does have a light menthol-ish feel to it, but not so much that it makes my nose run. Perhaps drying it out will make it even better for this purpose.
