A slight problem with Snuff!

Hello gentlemen. How is everyone? Firstly, I’d like to say I’m new to taking Snuff. I’m not a smoker I simply enjoy a spot of Snuff. Although thats where the problem is. You see, I’ve found that when enjoying some snuff I start to get a blocked nose. What is surprising though, it is only in one nostril. I don’t take much although perhaps I just take it too often? Or maybe I’m snnffing too hard? The only way I find to free my bloked nose is by taking a something. Any advise chaps?

I have nose blocked issues, sometimes to the point of thinking of quitting. I do find some snuffs don’t seem to make my nose stop up, like Dholakia White and Black, but the other day I did some Wilsons of Sharrow Super Menthol, and I was totally stopped up miserable all night. Some say it’s the menthols that stop up mostly, some have also thought it might be the parafin oil used in Poschls. I really don’t know, but I think for me, these do have an effect of irritating my sinuses. I have tried various sniff methods, I have also bypassed sniffing and just rubbed the snuff into my nose with my thumb. My advice, which I may do myself, is experiment with one particular snuff, for maybe a week, or few days, and if that snuff stops me up, set it aside, and then try another the next day. I like snuff, and don’t want to quit, but being stopped up is miserable. So, I want to find certain snuffs that do not stop me up, and not use the ones that do.

Hi, I wonder what snuff you take. Menthol snuff feels great cool at first, but then tends to make the nose run. As after a time a wet nose will swell the small veins hence blocking the nose.

Well, I’m currently using G. Smith & Sons George IV as well as Lowen-Prisen ‘Aromatisch-frischer Snuff’ and I find that they both block me up randomly. Sometimes I’m fine and other tiimes not so. What is most weird, as I mentioned, it tends to be only one size of my nose and tends to switch every now and again. I really do enjoy snuff with a passion and I don’t want to have to stop!

I’m pointing my finger at you Pöschl Löwen-Prise. As Tom says Pöschl’s do tend to block, then the George IV has a certain amount of clove it and some snuffers just cant take clove. Have you tried a fine dry snuff, say A Wilsons, or F&T Toast?

Yeah, I get the same thing sometimes, one-side or the other but, not very often both. I’ve not been at this very long but what I’m finding is this. If I can get it in the front part of my nose and dump it after 10 or 15 minutes when the nicotine been absorbed it’s a lot better. At first I was just shoving it up all day not really observing any technique, by the end of the day it was like I’d developed a cold. I also find like Snuff Head says, fine dryer snuffs seem better.

Right, in that case I will have to see about trying some other snuffs. The way I’m taking the Snuff is I’m sniffing it and then that is it. Am I ment to blow my nose after a certain amount of time? As I said, very new to this so any advise. What is the best way to take Snuff so that I don’t end up with a blocked nose? Although I will say chaps, thank god the finger has been pointed at the Snuff rather than the Snuffer as I do rather enjoy the practise.

I tend to find the least blocking snuffs are medium grind and dry, such as Gawith Hoggarth’s snuffs or Samuel Gawith’s Red/Blue/Yellow Crests or many of the Toque non toast snuffs. Avoid Poschl snuffs, although I don’t have too many problems with English menthols such as Hedges L260 (which I use first thing to clear my sinuses). Personally, very fine toasts can be very clogging if taken to excess. Try Toque Berwick Brown - for some reason I find it has quite a clearing effect.

Tom good idea to find out which ones block you up. I do like that lowen prise; however I keep it in the freezer and maybe take a pinch of that like 1 maybe 2 a month if that. I tend to stick with finer dryer snuffs i.e. toasts, wilsons sp snuffs like snuffhead points out… If I take a menthol all day it will clog me up so i tend to stay away from them…

I’ll point a finger at a diet with too much dairy products in it like milk and cheese. Beans can also create thicker mucus. There are other foods that can compound sinus problems but menthol snuffs are the biggest culprit. As much as I enjoy menthol snuffs I will only use them once or twice a day due to sinus swelling. I find the American made Scotch snuffs to be the most clearing of snuffs and they are easy to get up a stuffy nose too. welcome aboard then!

At the end of the evening I lavage my nose with a rubber ear lavage bulb (while breathing out of that nostril) or my sinuses clog overnight. I also find American scotches are clearing.

@ Jux: I cut all dairy from my diet about two years ago. My health improved dramatically within a few weeks (inlcuding my breathing). I also shed about 10 pounds of weight and I was skinny already! The mucous reduction is the biggest change I noticed. @ Snuffin: welcome to the forum! Snuff Head and tom both have some good advice for you. I would experiment with more snuffs than the two you have. George IV is very nice, but for me is an occasional indulgence. Its kind of thick, and I suppose it could become cloying if it was used exclusively. I also occasionally am partly blocked on one side or another. I just plod through and snuff anyway, shoveling it in if need be. Finer snuffs do seem to be more clearing to me too. I recommend some Wilsons of Sharrow, but avoid the moist ones for the time being. The most important thing to do is get a wide variety and experiment. You can settle on a handful of favorites after you get to know a lot of them. Oh, blow your nose whenever you need too. For me that’s usually within a few minutes after a pinch.

I have one nostril that tends to close up, I think some of us are just built that way. For me, any mentholated or scented snuff will do this to me after just a few pinches. I enjoy a wide range of snuffs but can only take plain snuffs on a day to day basis. Plain, fine snuffs are much more head clearing for me than any menthol. Menthol has a long history of causing congestion - something which many new snuffers, understandably, find strange. Menthol in snuffs seems to date from the early part of the last century and the first brands tended to be seen as ‘medicine’ rather than day to day snuffs. It could possibly be argued that they were never meant to be taken everyday.

So what I can gather is it is best to go for dry, fine snuff and maybe even plain. So, such brands as F&T, McChrystals,Torque, anyone recommend anything else?

Fubar Grunt, Toque Natural, QWS Smoker’s Blend, Dholakia Sparrow, Black, White. Toasts and Scotches. I LOVE menthols, but I guess my nose doesn’t, so I am trying to not use them for a while, which will be hard as I have a lot of them.

This has been my experience as well, which is why I don’t regret ordering Pöschl and Toque scented snuffs in 10-g containers. I love 'em, all of 'em, but for a day-to-day they’re clogging. I see a continued future of small flavored snuffs but largish orders of plains, once I’ve picked one or two I really want 1000 g of…

The problem I see with plain Snuffs is that I am not a smoker, nor addicted to Nicotine (yet!) so the only reason I actually take Snuff is because I love the smells. I’m more addicted to taking it because of the different tastes and smells rather than because of the rush. That’s just an added bonus… The million dollar question for me I supposeis, are there any Snuffs that are big on flavour but won’t clog me up? (Probably are but being a newbie to this, I haven’t a clue!)

You could try this:- Molens Potpourri it’s a good tobacco free snuff and very nice. See here

Menthols too often clog me up as well. The Toque non-mentholated fruit snuffs, as well as different SP’s seem to be the kindest to my nose of all the ones I’ve tried so far.

There are non-nicotine snuffs from several companies that traditionally supplied tobacco snuffs you can find at the stores to your left, as well as herbal snuffs that have no basis in tobacco. Consider giving those a try. Most of us came as nicotine addicts. If you routinely use tobacco snuff long enough, you too will become addicted. Most florals, perhaps what’s being referred to by others more accurately as (strongly) ‘scented,’ and mentholated Poschl snuffs are anathema to me. I’m suspicious of coarse snuffs, but haven’t finally decided on that yet. Perhaps as snuffster suggests, they may not have been expected to be used routinely. Perhaps it’s some sort of allergy. Who knows. It’s normal for the dominant side of the nose to switch every twenty minutes. If I have a side being difficult, other than trying to identify an offender, I focus on working with the other side, and try not to worry about it. All things being considered, a persistent obstruction on one side may be due to a physical obstruction, like a deviated nasal septum or a turbinate spur. Don’t try to fix this at home.
