Silver Snuff Boxes

Ha ha, nah today we use night vision goggles and fiber helmets when kicking ass in Helmand :o)

But how the h… do you get a new profile pic? I’ve tried with two urls now - one for photobucket, and one for flickr - no result!

@Viking: Dunno, I use dropbox for most of my hosting. It’s the best free hosting service, ever! Take a look: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTYzNjk3OQ (if you sign in with that link I will get some extra space) Edit: Forgot to add that you, too, will get some extra space with that link…

Is that an open, standing invitation, J-man? :stuck_out_tongue:

"Is that an open, standing invitation, J-man? :stuck_out_tongue: " Why yes it is! The more the merrier. Thanks, Mittens!

That’s a really nice silver snuffbox Viking! Got myself another one yesterday on ebay, looking forward to using it.

These are gorgeous boxes!

@snuff-belgium, it seems as if the first owner had a very loving wife who did not mind her husband’s snuffing! What is the date inscribed on the lid? It sure is a beautiful piece. My box is the same shape but not so richly engraved.

It’s not darling in the way tou mean  Early Victorian Solid Silver Snuffbox made by Edward Smith in 1854 Genuine early victorian solid silver snuffbox, originally given to Thomas Darling 1816-1893. “Son of George Darling, M. D., Thom as was educated at Charter house and St. John’s College, Cambridge (BA 1838, MA 1841). In 1839, he took Holy Orders, and subsequently be came In cum bent of Thaning ton (near Canterbury), and in 1848 Rector of St. Michael Royal with St. Martin-Vintry, City of London. His works in clude: Hymns for the Church of England (London: Longmans, 1855 & later editions)”. I must say it’s the best one I got so far, doesn’t leak any snuff even the ultra fine ones. What about yours? I love that shape. For everyday use on the road I use mostly the wooden ones from Patrick Collins and Drechsel shop. I do have some issues as of late with the Patrick Collins boxes, the lids are warped out of shape and they start to leak, not much can be done about that I suppose.

I feel a bit humbled when I see all these gorgeous antique silver snuffboxes. I just acquired my first silver one, won in an eBay auction today, and I wanted to show it off. It has a stunning banded agate cabochon set in the lid:Pics of my new snuffbox

@snuff-belgium, my box is solid and does not leak at all. What’s amazing is the snuff staying so fresh in there. I wonder if the gold plating has got anything to do with it. My box was made in 1908.

I’ve GOT to get me one of these. Seems it’d add a lot to the enjoyment of snuff. Only question, are you allowed to use them when you’re not dressed in lots of lace and wearing a powdered wig?

Of course! You can wear a frock coat, silk cravat, and top hat instead, if you like.

Very nice Pipen…!

Thanks. I have something of a fetish for semi-precious stones, so when I saw that box, I knew it was the right one for me.

Well then no problem. Just my normal everyday outfit.

I’m still amazed at how fresh snuff stays in my silver snuff box. I have some Toque Original in it which has been sitting there for more than 2 months now. It is still “like new”, fresh and not dried out at all. How is this possible?

@Pieter I’m guessing that it’s due to either being air tight or perhaps a natural tendency for Silver to impede deterioration of organic matter. Whatever it is, I hope to find something like this, someday. It would be quite classy to carry around my supply in one.
