I need a snuff box

C

antique wooden boxes like these seal or not?

or am I better off with a sterling friction fit?

M

All I can say that I love my 2 sterling boxes, and the seal seems pretty good. But they went way up in price after I got mine. I got lucky, but I hope you can get a decent deal on something nice! Btw mine are Ari D Norman boxes from SnuffStore.com, I think you can maybe get one direct. Also there’s another couple of threads on this subject here somewhere.

S

I have a couple like the wooden one and they are good boxes.

I also have an Ari D Norman. Since I received the silver one I seldom carry the wood ones but they are very good snuff boxes.

J

Those types of wood boxes are also friction fit. I love the ones that I have. When not in my pocket I keep them sealed in a jar on in my humidor so they stay slightly hydrated. This would not be a concern with silver. Also a silver box can be adjusted if leaky a wood box not so easy. I hope you get a good one.

J

With regard to the wooden box, it’s very much a matter of luck. I have four in all - one is almost perfectly airtight, one less so, and the other two not at all. You can’t tell by looking, unfortunately.

A

The Ari D Norman - apart from the Regnas boxes which are in a league of their own and debatebly expensive curios not snuff boxes   - are the only genuine silver purpose made snuff boxes still being made, as far as I know. Pricey but great; they leak a bit fresh from the box but just need some very firm hand pressure to close that off - its common with most metal boxes. Ari D Norman sell them direct and have a great website. Sooner or later they will probably stop making them and then it will be down to ebay, which could save you money I suppose but I prefer things new.

D

Hm. I checked the Ari D Norman website and didn’t find snuff boxes. Maybe they’re quit making them? Their other stuff sure looks fine, it’d be great to find a  silver snuff box too.

K

@ddavelarsen The Ari d snuff boxes are listed in the pill box section on their site.

B

So your the one whom out bid me. The wood ones are nice. I wax mine inside and out with paragon wax…seals the pores of the wood, lubes the hinges and tightens up the fit.and stabilizes any moisture loss also give it a nice shine. If your going for the sterling make sure it is a snuff box not a pill box. Snuff boxes are thicker metal and seal better.Although at any time I could lose $1200 worth of snuff boxes since I carry several.Just recently I been loading up the wooden ones and resting the sterling for dress to impress.Silver is always a good investment only to increase in value. Most antique wood snuff boxes 1800 to 1900 go under a hundred dollars. Silver of the same range $150 to 15000 depending on the condition and hallmarking smith

A

@ddavelarsen The snuffboxes - never confuse with pill - are under the smoking section - just checked and they are still there.

I think you might have been looking at the pill boxes which look like snuffs but are too small for snuff and have poor hinges.

K

@snuffster @ddavelarsen

Apologies, I remember these having been in the PB section when I last looked. Thanks snuffster, they are indeed in the smoking section.

V

My favorite are the Stainless Steel Turn Tins that are available at Mr. Snuff. I use it every day.

E

I’m very tempted by the turn tin. I use one of the wooden boxes mr snuff sells. I love it but it’s probably way too big for my needs

A

Stainless are nice and a nice compact size, but turning the darn things is a bit of technique so I’ve given up on it.

If anyone wants it I’ll mail it to the first person who asks on this thread - I’d rather give it away than hoard a decent tin that someone else might get some use of.

W

Where is the smoking section on the Ari D Norman site? I’m either blind or thick, but I’ll be buggered if I can find it.

Stefan

EDIT: I was looking at the wrong Ari D Norman site, I was being thick lol :-p

Just in case you get lost again:

Second the idea of sealing wood boxes to help prevent or minimize moisture loss. I love my Triple tech boxes, but they (and all wood boxes) can dry snuff out like nobody’s business. I coat mine with a good layer of carnuba inside and out and have noticed a difference in the rate of moisture loss. Most snuffs will keep at reasonable humidity for at least 2-3 days this way.

C

so if I use pipe wax on the inside of the wooden box I just bought, and only keep a day’s worth of snuff in it at any given time, I should be ok? Looking forward to getting this box in the mail today, the more I pinch the less I think of my bullets.

C

I got this today. Lid is nice and tight, waxed it inside and out and it looks great. Just how old are these anyway?

S

I have one just like that and one with metal on the end. Yours looks to be in excellent condition.

N

@cakeanddottle its not that old, those clover leaf flip top boxes were the last wooden flip tops to be produced, I believe the maker died a couple years ago so there are no more wooden flip top snuff boxes currently being produced.

N

By the way I have the exact same box and its kick ass!

D

I have a snuff box that is the same dimensions as this one, and I filled it all the way up with a QSnuff 10g ice cool.  It held the whole tub!  I had no idea it could hold 10g.  I may have to recalculate how much snuff I’m using in a day.

H

I had the same problem when I bought my (roughly) 3x2 Heartwood. I decided that I just had no choice but to use more snuff. I could just put less in the box every day, but what kind of sense does that make?

E

Snuffster, can you easily pinch from the turn tin? If so I may invest in one

A

To pinch you have to separate the two halves, possible but the friction glues the halves together and they tend to jerk open and fly apart. You need a lot of pressure to rotate the halves as well, plus the metal is pretty thin so constant pulling apart would probably deform it. I’m sure a bit of odourless oil or something might help, but I’ve not tried - if something requires effort and thought to perform a simple function I tend to lose interest. You can have mine if you want to PM me your address.

J

My turn tin seems to be giving me no problems at all - very easy either to twist round or take the top off. Mind you, I’m only using it for schmalzers so there’s no lack of lubrication!

S

What is the process to wax a wood box?just melt the wax apply and buff?

H

I’d say just rub a piece of wax in the box. Melting would be overkill.

S

I just won a clover inlay box on ebay. Looks to be in good shape. I’m looking for ways to prolong the snuff in the box; looks like they hold a large quantity of snuff.

H

I would suggest that you keep a lookout on e-bay.

S

Looks can be deceiving?

K

Did you know Mr.Snuff teak wood snuff boxes With the Mrsnuff logo are still avaiable at Amazon.com . Wish someone would have told me

T

Iif you enjoy snuff, get a good one you’ll have for years that you’re proud of and enjoy. You could even get a cheap  simple acrylic plastic one if that was your style. But if you want one especally for snuff, and that suits it, that’ll probably be a good silver or wooden one, and some people prefer vintage value too. For me, and my style, these are beuts…

http://www.drechselshop-online.de/tabatieren.htm

Just choose whatever your style is and shop around, making sure it’s for tobacco or just that it can close properly and hold your snuff.

J

Those are beautiful looking boxes, Theatre. Do you have one?

T

No I’ll be getting one soon. I don’t take snuff out much with me so I’ve never really needed a snuff box I just used bullets outside but I’d like a proper snuff box and theirs was the nicest I could find.

J

I’m envious. Do post some details when it arrives.

C

I do find that finer snuffs can dry in the clover box I have. I have to hydrate the snuff half way through the day. It’s fine for 2-4 hour outings, but all day and anything finer than Kendal Brown does dry a bit.

Love the box, but it has convinced me that I’ll need a sterling box.

S

Toast seem fine in my wooden boxes. But…I rarely carry them now that I have the Ari D Norman box.

V

@Snuffster, pm me about the turn tin, I will make sure its gets good use.

@Theatre those look sharp! I gotta get my hands on one.

U

@Theatre: They are really beautiful. I have two of them in use regularly and they always give me a feeling of old fashion style. You will not be disappointed.

A

Sorry, tin gone.
