Schmalzers: Advice sought re: technique and neatness

As for Pöschl’s Mix snuff, this is for making homemade halb-schmalzer. Halb-schmalzlers are hybrids or mixes of snuff and schmalzler and the snuff half is usually mentholated. No full schmalzler will ever contain menthol. This one might be left alone for now. I have yet to even do this one.

I do this for 2 weeks now and i am hooked. I do it with Doppelaroma (vaguley 5:1 with Pöschl´s Mix snuff) and i really, really like it. Even better then the pre-made Bayern-Prise.

I keep scrolling past this thread and laughing whenever I read “Schmalzler” and “Neatness” because those two words don’t go together! hahahaha

@Prismaster That is something I want to try. What ratio is recommended on the Mix pouch? Are you tweaking that?

@Xander the pouch says: 1 pouch of mix snuff (25g) to 50g of Doppelaroma. that is what they recommend. i guess i have 1 (mix) to 3 (Doppelaroma). i have to say that this is great. if it comes from fresh containers or even better fresh pouches and you just mix them up. you can still taste the schmalzler but it is enhanced with a fine touche of english menthol type sensation. depends of the personal taste but i love it. it is like Bayern-Prise but with a even more fresher and better taste to it. i recommend you to try it yourself.

Thanks! I intend to. Bayern-Prise is also on my wishlist.

@Xander If you have the option to get them, just get them. I doubt you will regret it.

Good morning snuffers. @ JoeSnuffer…First off, love your youtube reviews. Thanks for posting them. Secondly, I just dipped into some klostermashugnia…r however yousay/spell it. I really liked it. I also got a traditional stoneware snuff bottle and filled it with the Bernard aecht fresco, which is very sweet and good. But holy Ned, does this stuff cause snotterfalls from the nose (copyright 2012 Uncle_Squinty, all rights reversed). Thank goodness I bought a dozen hankies…I’m greasing them up pretty fast. I know, TMI for this early in the day. LOL

@Uncle_Squinty - hahaha snotterfalls. That’s great!

May I ask a question about a Schmalzer? I have a tin of Bayern Prise which I got from a local tobacconist which I suspect may be a bit stale but I have nothing to compare it with. The aroma I get is this: at first it is a rather nice earthy, nutty smell, with perhaps a tiny hint of menthol (in my ‘nose’s eye’ I see it as tiny blue flecks like you get in washing powder). However quite soon this gives way to a weird smell which reminds me of, I am sorry to say, public lavatories and railway station waiting rooms before the smoking ban - a sort of smell of very old stale tobacco with a hint of urine! Is this how it ought to smell?

it would be easier to tell @AustinAllegro if Poschl did not ruin everything with menthol… “Oh this is a perfect snuff so throw some menthol in there to confuse em”

@AustinAllegro not sure about the staleness, maybe its old as you say. Bayern-prise is a halb-schmalzler, meaning schmalzler mixed with a menthol snuff. I’ve never had this one, but I will recommend Bernard Zwiefacher as a nice menthol halb-schmalzler. For a pure schmalzler, Bernard Brasil doppelfermentiert is a good place to start.

@AustinAllegro Bayern-prise is great hybrid of schmalzler and snuff…I had it few times and I loved it…very similar to Bernards Zwiefacher…maybe Zwiefacher is slightly more “fleshy”…

@mipasma you are damn right. love this snuff.

My schmalzlers. I love them all, but I liked the most Schmalzelrfranzl (left). Most of schmalzlers feature fantastic taste. I think schmalzler is not to all-day use (maybe Pöschl´s “A” or Sternecker´s Fresko). They are delight that beautifies life. In other picture is Schmalzler/snuff hybrid Bernard Weiss-Blau with nice delicate flavor.
