Never had Schmalzers....!

I will admit- I suppose I’m a rather poor snuff enthusiast… and I AM a snuff enthusiast… It’s one of my favorite things. HOWEVER I’ve always wanted to try a Schmalzer and never have. The banana bomb sounds terrific. However everytime I think to buy some I forget to. I suppose I don’t want to be stuck with a ton of snuff I don’t end up liking. I have an idea what these snuffs are like, but can anyone give me a good description of what to expect? What are the main characteristics of a good schmalzer? Any advice/info or experiences with them posted would be appreciated! -Rob

My first schmalzler was Bernards Aecht Altbeyerischer. It is coarse ground and moist and smells like a mixture of tobacco and maple syrup in your nose. I have tried a lot of schmalzlers since then and that one is still my favorite, and it comes in a 10g tap box so you don’t have to buy a ton to try it. If you like that one you can buy a 100g bag of Poschl’s Perlesreuter, another good one.

Yes, Bernards Aecht Altbeyerischer is very good, …to be recommended…

My first was Bernard’s Doppelt Fermentiert. It was coarse, moist and smelled like quality tobacco, dates/raisins and a hint of maple. It doesnt burn much, makes your nose drip like a faucet and burns when it drips. However they are delicious!

I haven’t met one I didn’t like, so you really can’t go wrong, however, Südfrucht (bannana bomb) is the sweetest of the sweet, and not a fair representation of the style. Nahman/didi878 and Brandasaur’s recommendations are excellent for a first time choice, and quite possibly could end up being your mainstay schmalzler.

I’ve tried several though by no means all of the main stream. The one I settle for is Ludwig Sternecker’s Echt Fresko, if I’m spelling that rightly. Poschl schmalzlers are said to be amongst the best in their range, but I wasn’t too impressed, strangley this IS a snuff that tastes like Marmite to me, though you might not know what I mean by that. Bernard schmalzers are good, but I prefer the Sternecker, though I’ve yet to try the renowned Dopelt Fermentiert. Next order.

It does taste like Marmite. I remember the old “Eat it, it’s good for you” and “If you don’t eat all your food you are ‘helping Hitler’”. Never could figure out how leaving my toast and Marmite helped Hitler. I never did like things that are good for me.

I’m glad you recognise the Marmite: I thought it might be just my buggered taste buds. Today I will do 50% of things that are good for me and the other 50% of things which are not. I find the Sternecker keeps it’s original complexity better and doesn’t reduce to Marmite.

I’ve enjoyed all the schmalzlers I have tried, I’ve have Poschl Dopplelaroma, Sudfrucht, Bernards Klostermischung, Zweifacher, Brasil Feinst and Sternecker Echt Fresco. All of them I find lovely in their own way! I find the common thread among all of them is the richness almost… Cakeiness? I would suggest Poschl Doppelaroma or Bernards feisnt or Klostermischung to be a good start schmalzler choices. If you love sweet things, Sudfrucht will be right up your alley!

Beware, though. Using Schmalzler can cause a slight mess, if you overdo it. Like at the German Snuff Championship this weekend:

I think she’s got a little under her nose. Sort of looks like it. You can almost see it in the picture.

My favourite schmalzler so far is Bernards Klostermischung. Lovely, moist and coarse stuff, has an aroma of figs and dried fruits. Absolutely delicious stuff. I’ve also enjoyed the Brasil Doppelt Fermentient. @MiB Have you seen the picture where they’ve got schmalzler smeared from nose to ear? I can’t read German, but from what I gather the site was saying “What the hell? This is gross, do people really use snuff like this?”

@shikitohno Oh, yes. Though the press reviews were generally positive, what I´ve seen so far. The pictures, though… if I´d never been in contact with Snuff before… I dunno. That may very well be the reason, why Pöschl doesn´t support those Championships.

Thats the best looking girl with a wad of brown stuff smeared under her nose i’ve ever seen.

@thendrix65804 Looks like a dirty sanchez… ok I’m done.

“akh main got… I shouldn’t have done that”

Ready…set…CRAM!

Honestly, I wanted to order the Banana Bomb too, but forgot last time :stuck_out_tongue: . I shall add it to the list!

just got a box of the new Schmalzer from Bernard: Regensburger Pris and as all their Schmalzers, this one is very good too. Not too sweet, with hints of dry fruits and earthly tobacco base. If you like Schmalzer, you will like that one too.

Those people who cram snuff into their nostrils like that must get a real head buzz…
