Collecting old stuff related to Bydgoszcz/Bromberg - such as maps, ID cards, notgelds, invoices, etc. So, therefore, history.
Colognes, coins, books, cheese.
I play bass and guitar and like to tinker with and fix them up. Doing electronics and building effects pedals is a long running hobby of mine also, I took industrial electronics in HS Votech and that was the springboard for that. Collecting knives is something I do on occasion and I have a little collection of air rifles and pistols that I love to shoot when time and weather permits. Reading has always been a passion of mine too. I like a lot of different genres, from the classics to tech type to comic books. Lately a lot of classic comics from the gold and silver age are being reprinted and that is a great thing. Just picked up Terry and the Pirates and it is a blast. Even as a child one thing I never really experienced was boredom, never enough time is my problem.
Books, music, painting, psychology, philosophy, physiology, camping, insects, plants etc.
Western Martial Arts with live steel or ratten wasters, black powder shooting, smokeless shooting with just about everything, taking my kids along wherever I go, work (disaster mitigation), traditional archery, my pygmy goats, reading historical and ethnograpical works, basic economics, capitalism, anarchism, anachronism, snuff, snus, real money, recently snuffboxes as well,telling people to keep off my land.
I’m one those people which doesn’t have any hobbies at all, at least now. I’m very religious and quite political though, but we don’t talk about that here.
I have never been obsessed. I’ve really liked things, aye but never enough to obsess. Well, ok, I suppose I was more inclined towards obsessional behaviour as a teen: Robert Rankin; fairy tales and origins; David Lynch; New Order; and Chesney Hawkes. Lmfao I have varied interests nowadays. I’m more of a ‘little about a lot’ kind of person
Fountain pens, inks, cycling and Stereo systems but i do not have enough money for feeding that obsession
@enfiye Finding that one lacks the funds to satisfy an urge CLEARLY exposes that urge as an obsession.
snuffy—too funny
@lunecat - Mechanical or Wooden?
@lunecat i love mechanical pencils, Pentel Graphgear 600, Zebra 2 Way Tect Light, Faber Castell Tk Fine Vario - L and Rotring Rapid Pro these are my favorites.
^ go on a school day during school hours there will be no kids and if there is they will be grouped with their class and easily avoided
I’ve started making wine from fruits available for free. I’ve done a batch gooseberry from my gooseberry bush (I still have more in the freezer) and concord grape from my parent’s grape vine which we picked last autumn and froze. I’m going to start a batch of crab apple from the tree on my property this weekend, and my in-laws want to give me a bunch of Macintosh apples from their tree which is now full of fruit. A friend is also going to give me a bunch of cooking pears from his trees when they are ready a little later this fall. I’m having a great time at it!
My, That sounds GREAT @cruellers!!! Be sure to let us know how they turn out!
Cannabis (vaping mainly) is my main obsession followed with tobacco (e-cig, snuff, snus and the occasional cig). I also have a thing for Pharmacology and pharmacodynamics (what drugs do to the body) and I find RC’s and Psychedelics fascinating! And I enjoy a fine Whiskey (Single malts scotches mostly). I also enjoy mountain and road biking as well as Longboarding. I also walk quite a bit. I’m also an audiophile and enjoy good music with my headphones (Beyerdynamics DT770 Pro 80ohm). I’m also a big fan of photography, but lack of time and money doesn’t permit right now. Big fan of the outdoors, but again, lack of time, money and transport defies the adventurer in me I’m not sure all of these are defined as obsessions though haha
Travel: I love travelling, particularly around Asia and particularly to slightly off-the-path destinations. I’m a freelance consultant, so I have a lot of down time, no wife or dependants at present, so when I have down time, I look for cheap flights around the region I live and wander off. I went to Iran last year, one of the best trips I’ve ever down. As an Australian, I didn’t need to do a group tour (Americans need to have a tour guide with them). People are incredibly friendly and hospitable. In the cities, they all hate the government and aren’t particularly religious. I always think Iran must be a bit like Brazil if Brazil got taken over by a bunch of psychotic, corrupt, Catholic priests. The women are gorgeous and flirtatious. The architecture is fantastic. No crime on the streets, apart from a few riots every now and again. The bottom was falling out of the riyal when I went, a flight across the country cost $20, a meal in a five-star resto $5. Japan was a trip, too, the most different country I’ve ever been to. Urban hiking: It’s just a pretentious name for walking around the city. But I like going to completely new parts of Jakarta and walking down the backstreets, alleys and along the canals and railway lines. It’s okay in the day time, you wouldn’t do it at night. Jakarta is not like a rough Latin American city, people are poor but usually friendly with foreigners if you play your cards right. I was first inspired to start doing this by a friend who read about some British author, Will Self, who always walks to and from the airport when he arrives in a new city. My friend did that in Jakarta, it took him eleven hours to get there, with stops for beer at the Seven-Eleven along the way. Writing: I do a bit of travel writing and contribute to local magazines and papers. I get paid peanuts for it, it’s a hobby, not a job, but it’s good fun. I also have a bit of a pen thing, I’ve got a small collection of vintage fountain pens, which I use for journalling. Pipes: I had a big obsession with small American artisan pipe makers from the 1950s and 1960s. Some of the guys with little shops made great, hand-made pipes, back in the day when a pipe was considered a tool for smoking tobacco, and not an effing objet d’art. Often, the early handmade pipes sell on ebay for under $20. Watch out for Malaga pipes and pipes made by John Bessai. I always kept my mouth shut about them on the pipe forum, I didn’t want bidding competition. But I think my collection is pretty complete now, and this is a snuff forum, anyway. Computer security: Haha. This one is tending towards the political, it’s an obsession, not a hobby. I’m a bit obsessed with the idea that human beings should have the right to communicate privately, without having people listening in to what they are saying. I’m not an absolutist, but I come close. I play with encryption software, anonymizers, and stuff like that, even though most of the time I’m just checking out snuffhouse or Facebook. Even so. Photography: Part of my job involves interviewing people in villages in Indonesia about development projects and how it affects them. For documentation purposes, I usually take a photo of the person I interview. I really like capturing a good image of someone I’ve interviewed, it feels like I know them better. I hate “peeping tom” photography, sneaking around trying to catch shots of people from far away. I like taking a portrait shot of someone when I know them or have talked to them. Reading: My kindle is my favorite electronic gadget. I read all sorts of stuff, fiction and non-fiction. Paul Theroux is one of my favorite authors. I also like the old Victorian explorers, like Sir Richard Burton and Aleister Crowley, and their writings about their travels. I majored in Anthropology at uni, I still like reading light, readable anthropology, case studies and so on. It’s fun like reading a novel is fun. I was just reading “Mama Lola: A Vodou Priestess in Brooklyn”. Excellent stuff. Films: Tarantino. Werner Herzog. Nicholas Roeg. Arthouse meets action blockbuster type genres. Motorbikes: Still getting over the broken ankle I suffered in a prang on the streets of Jakarta. I limp a bit in the mornings. This took the edge off my enthusiasm for riding around town a bit, but I still like taking a bike out in the country. A while back, I leaveraged my postion as a freelance contributor to mags to get myself out with Jakarta’s Harley-Davidson club, they supplied me with a bike to ride down to the beach six hours away. Silly bikes, really, but at least I ticked that fantasy off.
