Heartburn? Destruction of stomach?

Once I gave up cigarettes I realized fewer stomach issues- having been a moderate to heavy user of snuff for 2+ years I rarely if ever notice a drip and certainly no corresponding issues in the gut. As already recommended- blow your nose if it gets drippy and see where it goes from there.

The worst throat drips for me com from artisan snuffs, or more specifically coarse artisan snuffs. I can’t take fine snuffs either, so these days I stick to the main British snuff mills (particularly the Kendal mills), and tend not to have any problems. As to intestinal effects, I do get them occasionally, but don’t attribute it to throat drip. I oscillate between smoking roll ups, taking snuff, and using ecigs. I can sometimes get a bit more acid when using snuff as cigs tend to be more of an appetite suppressant than snuff, so when I move into snuff a bit more, my body responds as though more food should be due. Maybe moving from dip to snuff has similar effects? I can’t comment though as I don’t dip.

I thought so. I swallowed a lot of water from the nose to the stomach, especially in the menthol snuff. but my stomach did not suffer at all, although sensitive. I do not think snuff is harmful to the body. I hate cigarettes anymore. I feel it resting on my mouth when I smoke chimney.

I have GERD, and I have to be quite careful with what goes into my stomach. I never have a problem with snuff, but I am always careful not to let it drip down my throat. I find that, after taking a pinch, the snuff gradually ‘creeps’ backwards towards my throat over the course of a minute or two. I have learned to tell when it has reached my soft palate, and that’s when I blow it out. I’m sure I must swallow some, but this technique reduces it to a tiny amount that causes no problems.

I feel the back drip is when the nicotine is really working, and that is when the fun begins. Its been a solid 15 years since I got heartburn. It used to happen every night at some damn hippie festivals eating beans every night. Have you considered your diet as part of the problem? I dont know much about the subject, but feel like the back drip is much better than accidentally ingesting dip juice. Which is one of the worst things to happen using tobacco.

If your primary concern is heartburn, buy yourself a box of Baking Soda. Put a spoonfull in your mouth and chug it down with water. The acid and base will neutralize each other producing gas. A few healthy belches will take care of the gas. Baking soda is a pretty good tooth powder too. I use regular tooth powder (Country Gent) because it also has calcium carbonate in it (mine has fluoride too). Powder is a better abrasive for cleaning the teeth than paste is.

Yeah IME drip from nasal snuff is minimal if you’re sniffing it properly and while all tobacco use exacerbates GERD through nicotine’s dilation of the cardiac sphincter I have found snuff to be the least exacerbating. Oral moist snuff/snus is the worst, cigarettes are somewhere in the middle. Also yeah baking soda + water will cure heart-burn in an instant and is very relieving.

I don’t understand this throat drip thing. I’ve snuffed for years now and it doesn’t happen and never has. Are you sniffing too hard?

As a GERD sufferer, I wouldn’t recommend baking soda for heartburn. While it is true that it will temporarily neutralize the acid, the relief is only temporary, and it can often make the problem worse. It is called ‘acid rebound’ and I guess it is analagous to the nasal rebound one gets when taking menthol snuffs. Your body compensates for the neutralizing effect by producing even more acid. Baking soda is also a powerful laxative :frowning: We have more advanced treatments such as proton pump inhibitors nowadays.

It’s quite a subtle effect, so it is possible that it’s been happening all along and you simply haven’t noticed. I only notice it with certain snuffs myself, but I know it is probably happening with all of them. I also find that I can’t take certain snuffs after I take a break for a while, because the drip stings/burns. Once I get used to snuffing again, the sensation lessens dramatically. It could also be a matter of technique and/or anatomy.

So how you doing? Still having stomach issues?

Hi guys, thanks for all your comments! No the heartburn went away, which is great  As far as throat drips, I have to use a spit bottle as if I was dipping  Trying to compensate for the huge amount of nicotine that dip gives, I find I need to use a good amount of snuff. As far as blowing it out after a few minutes, that seems like it would take the wind out of the sails. I imagine it’d be akin to stubbing out a cigarette when it’s only half-way finished, or throwing out a wad of dip after only a few minutes. I just snuff it up and let it nestle in my nose, it’ll drop down into my throat, and I spit it out. I was hoping I wouldn’t need a spit bottle since I was switching to snuff  But also, my technique needs work. That’s what I’m going to research next. You guys are great!! troop
