Hello all . As some of you know Im a newbie to snuff , can I ask is it normal to get heartburn from snuff ?
I read this that maybe hints on nicotine causing it ??? Impairing the function of the LES. “The nicotine in tobacco seems to lower the pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter,” says Cheskin. The reduced pressure could allow stomach acids and enzymes to back into the esophagus. Increasing acidity. Nicotine increases the production of stomach acid, says Carr-Locke. Harming the esophagus. Tobacco smoke seems to directly irritate the esophagus lining, says Cheskin. Reducing saliva production. This causes two problems. When you swallow, saliva helps push acid down, out of the esophagus and into the stomach. Saliva also contains bicarbonate, which is a mild acid neutralizer, says Cheskin. So a reduction in saliva can make your acid reflux worse. Only the effects of smoked tobacco have been seriously studied on GERD symptoms, say experts. But anything with nicotine is likely to worsen GERD. Waring says that chew might pose specific problems. “Smoking a cigarette only takes a few minutes,” he says. “But people use chewing tobacco all day. That could lead to more irritation.” By the same token, nicotine gum could also pose a risk, say experts. “I don’t know of any studies on nicotine gum and GERD,” says Cheskin. “But I would worry that anything with nicotine would increase the risk of acid reflux.” Tobacco use also increases the long-term risks of GERD. Acid reflux is more likely to damage the esophagus in people who use tobacco than in people who don’t. The damage will heal more slowly too, Cheskin says. Over time, tobacco users are more likely to face complications of GERD. These include chronic inflammation of the esophagus and even esophageal cancer. I did get heart burn when I smoked . I had hoped it would vanish ??
@Steveo, I’ve been suffering from GERD for a long time now. It was wrongly diagnosed as angina at first because it causes the same symptoms and I did suffer from angina (I have 6 stents “fitted” already). It normally hits me when I lie down or when I ride my bike, sitting in a forward position. I quit smoking more than 3 years ago but it’s getting worse. I can’t see that snuffing can bring this on. Nicotine from snuff enters the bloodstream via one’s mucous membrane and cannot have an effect on one’s stomach, I believe. But when one smokes a cigarette, the tar and other poison mixes with your saliva and it is swallowed. That could cause damage to the stomach. I suffered from ulcers many years ago and all the doctors who treated me, told me to stop smoking. I use Zantac which contains ranitidine and it works very well but I do not want to rely on that. I’m going to ask my doctor whether I can have surgery to fix the problem. I would also like to hear from other members in this regard.
Hi Pieter , what you said made sense , But I know the nicotine enters via the mucous but I have been thinking that you must get some nicotine going into the stomach from snuff and I wonder if this is the cause of heart burn ?..
Snus sometimes gives me hiccups and heartburn, but I never had it from snuff.
I used to suffer terribly from acid reflux. Expensive pills, etc. I heard that pickles and pickle juice is an old time cure. I did the google thing “pickles and acid reflux”, and was surprised. I tried it and it worked wonders for me. It has been 3 years or so without any pills. Apple cider vinegar is also mentioned, but I never tried that.
Another reflux sufferer here. Haven’t noticed a correlation between Snuff and my stomach acid bubbling back up. Just had some beer and cranberry juice which has me feeling like a human lava lamp, though. If it gets worse, a digestive biscuit should help a little.
Two things that might be worth noticing: 1) as I recently found out acid reflux is best cured by a healthy diet (that is, pretty much, “if something’s good, it’s bad for GERD”); failing that, it’s better to see a gastroenterologist than self-medicating, since there might be several causes (and funny stuff like alkaline reflux, where use of sodum bicarbonate etc is actually harmful). 2) according to some sources, menthol and/or peppermint are very powerful carminatives. If it looks like it’s snuff that worsens your GERD, try with non-mentholated, non-minty sorts and see if there’s an improvement.
Good info thankyou , well I use none menthol snuff as mint clogs me up … Change in diet I can see that helping , which I will try . But il try an sp today so a base snuff g&h . Il see how I get on with that ! . Il post my findings . I don’t think it will make any difference but we will see .
I used to have Heartburn, and the cause and solution was very simpel… Cause : Didn’t drink enough (water)… Solution : Drink more water, and in the beginning I mean MORE. like 3/4 liters a day. No more heartburn since then, ever. And when I say water, I mean water - no coke, soda’s, coffee etc. ( You CAN drink those next to the water ). Read this please : http://www.watercure.com/ ( or better, buy the dudes book ) Take care!
Micheltn thank you very much il try that and read the link !!!. Thanks again !
No problem! also a good read for people with High Blood pressure, back pain etc.
I used to have reflux, but since I tipped the scales halfway between ‘normal’ and ‘55 Buick’ I decided to lose some weight. So far I’m down 65 lbs and have started drinking water regularly. As a result, when I lay down to sleep my internal organs are no longer dancing the lambada with my gut and the reflux has disappeared…
I got acid reflux last night. I think it’s this damn damn stomach flu. I hate this flu.
I reduced the consumption of cigs greatly, and my heartburn has all but vanished. Loosing weight, which I’ve lost 50 pounds since this summer, also helps, and ranitidine, like Pieter suggested, is great for the occasional bout of heartburn.
I live on a constant diet of Zantac. I’ve had bad heartburn for a few years. It is a result of my dipping days. It is starting to diminish, but every once and again I buy a can and back it comes.
